  1. Thanks always get good practical advice here. I have been considering two wire set ups on longer rods for high divers to be a part of the aresenal for next year. I just picked up a couple of slightly used Penn 320GTI and Penn Fathom master downrigger rods spooled with new 20 lb ande envy for my outdowns that I am going to purchase so will try to get a couple more daiwa setups with wire ready as well.

  2. Twicw last week I had problems with dipseys not releasing even after a strong hit by big fish. The one fish we had nearly to the boat until the dipsey decided to pop out of the water an throw a bunch of slack in the line. This has happened three times this summer all on large fish. I can understand a skippie not causing the dipsey to relaese but fish in excess of ten or more pounds not getting the dipsey to release despite strong strikes and viscious runs. What am I doing wrong? BTW this only happens on the outside (mono) dipsy rods no the wire rods.

  3. Thank you all for the excellent feedback! I feel absolutely confident in this choise now and even better considering that the rods, reels and line are in excellent condition and were less expensive for two wire set ups than I would have paid for one brand new! Hope to give them a dip theis weekend. If not for sure over the first two weeks of August.

  4. I have the same problem with my Islander sans the kicker. Put Bennett trim tabs on they help handling and trim on plane but still have trouble getting on plane. Next will be a Dol Fin and if that doesn't work probably a prop change.

  6. I think you might be right. Surface temps and other conditions were conducive to perch. We are going to try the power minnow thing with lake erie perch rigs when we are up in a couple of weeks. We fished for them in Erie using small emerald shiners or if they were unavailable golden shiners or fatheads what ever the bait shops had. I have caught literally thousands of perch between the Peninsula and the Ohio line over the years so the technique is prety well known to us. Still a different lake may make for a need to adjust tactics. Although I can't think the habits of perch would be all that much different.

  7. Well, I was fishing on Lake Erie June 25 and June 27 and we nailed the perch in 60 fow. 3 guys on the 25th we limited out in about 3.5 hrs. 2 guys on the 27 and we limited out in 2.5 hrs. So I would have to say those were perch we marked.

    Thanks for the report.

Congratulations on the great catch on Lake Erie! However my question was if there were any thoughts about the liklihood of the fish we marked in Lake Ontario early in July at 65 feet from the Oak west might have been perch. I fished Erie for a lot of years and always caught perch in abundance. I am just wondering about the availability of these fine eating fish in the area of Lake "O" we are currently fishing.

  8. I also use 30# flicker and yes it is temper mental line. It will twist very bad if you do not take it off the stock reel the rite way. You must take it of with th line loading from the top and do not use yor fingers as tension. I have a made up tension devise that works great. Use the best quality bearing swivels and a section of 20 pound floro and u are all set. NO FLEAS NO PROBLEM. I run it on all rigger rods and my dipsey. Good luck any Q's let me know.

Could you upload a pic of the "made up tension device"?

  9. 8'6" medium heavy Daiwa Wilderness rods rated up to 30 lb line capacity

I believe these rods are to be used for dipsey diver use. Any rods with medium or medium heavy are sufficient.

So two votes in favor I feel less stressed. I have always used shorter rods on my inside dipsy's even when fishing for walleye on lake erie. I planned to use the wire with dipseys set on 1 or 1.5 to get deeper and let the outside dipseys be my high divers I might even give the lite bites a try this summer they are still in the package from when I bought them two years ago since I will be running mono on the outside 10' rods.

  10. My wife and I were trolling between Point Breeze and Johnson's Creek in about 65 FOW a couple of weeks ago and we noticed large masses of fish on the bottom. We got to wondering if those might possibly be perch. Anybody have any thoughts? If there are perch in that kind of quantity then that is kind of a neglected fihery and a darned good one too.

  11. How long is mono line good for on the reel. Does it need to be changed every year? Also if I would buy a bulk spool but only use a few hundred yards this year would that line still on the bulk spool still be good for several years?

  12. I heard that if you run at least a 40 pound power pro you won't have trouble with fleas is that true? the second question has to do with running spin doctor fly combos. Is there any way to prevent the huge amount of line twist?

    SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS

Left Green Harbor Saturday at about 9:30 marked lots of fish but not a single strike. Fished 3 hours no results. Sunday we got a later start set up trolling east in 65 FOW. Trolled zig-zag to north and east of the Oak with no results until we went a little deeper when initiating a turn to avoid sailboat traffic when bang ten minutes later boated a 10 pound steelhead. Reset everything and was going to get back out there when wife said "BUt we are marking all those fish" so we trolled west through GOBS of bait fish with no strikes till I turned boat due north at Johnson's Creek and as soon as we got into more than 100 FOW BANG 15 minutes later we boated a 14 pound king. Reset rod and then about ten minutes later we had a HUGE hit on the port inside dipsey that darned near spooled us. Both my spouse and I had a turn at this fish only to see what looked like a 30lb+ king throw the hook about twenty feet behing the boat. All totaled we fought that monster nearly 40 minutes What a battle!! Fished another two hours without results then headed for the harbor. Can't wait for August two whole weeks on lake O!!!!

  14. Just a question about merchandisers/tackle shops. Are there any (like Poor Richards in Erie PA if you have membership in PA Steelhead club) that offer 10% discounts if you are members of LOU or other organizations?
