  1. Arrived 12:30pm and was able to get out. Small brown along the wall as we set up. Moved east away from the road and kept hanging bottom so se eventually pulled lines to move out deeper. Then rods started to fire. Caught some lost a few. Then when resetting the low voltage alarm goes off. I switch to the other battery but was concerned about the lack of charging. After a triple we decide to head in and track down the problem. At the ramp I discover I never plugged the kicker harness to the system. Problem solved. Back at it today. No pictures as we were shaking off the rust and breaking In a rookie. Plus it was wet, lol.

    Hopefully some pics today.

  2. Good luck out there Capt Spike.....hopefully you guys flatten it out for our crew the following weekend

    Be Safe

Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United

We'll be there till Wed. so hoping it lays down for a couple days anyway. Plan is never too bad either just more driving. Either way it's Fishing.

Looks like it might be a little rough on Saturday but Sunday looks better.

Saw that. Hoping it lays down sooner for Saturday so maybe we can get the evening bite.

I'f you drive south and don't fish Ontario hit Seneca not Cayuga. If you got to go to Seneca get on my site and give me a call. I'll be on the water and let you know where to go. Three years ago I'd of sent you to Cayuga the lampreys took care of that. Sean

I'll be sure to do that. Thanks for the help.

  3. Thanks for the info. Looks like it could settle down enuf for us by Sunday. If not Irondequoit is the same distance as Cayuga from Oswego. Maybe try there and if it lays down go outside from there on that particular day. We only have a few days so hopefully the wind is kind enuf to let us get some fishing in.

  4. Heading out Saturday for a few days. Looks like it's going to blow Saturday and Sunday, at least. Trying to formulate a plan B. Are any of the harbors worth trolling if you can't get on the lake? Refering to Oswego, Fairhaven and Sodus. Seems most reports are from outside the harbors. If that is the case we'll look to head to Cayuga or Seneca. Any recommendations on which one we should target? I have been on Cayuga a few times but last spring we didn't do much fishing out of Dean's. We were told we should have gone further south. Fear with that is further south = larger waves when the wind is N-NW.

    Thanks for any info.

  5. I haven't had either of the units but if I were you I'd save a little more and get the better unit. You already have hydraulic steering why not set it up to run the best way it can? If you put the cheaper unit on now chances are you'll be ripping it off later and installing the more expensive one anyway. I can see if you didn't already have hydraulic steering using the other style.

  6. If I were you I'd get an suction cup adapter first and try a couple locations. I know mine did not like the kicker side when I had it temp mounted there. I ended up moving out towards the edge of my boat opposite the kicker. Since it only needs to be used when trolling I didn't care about it coming out of the water when running.

  7. I ended up making a temporary mount on the transom for one side and will use the DR rod holder for the other.   Once the weather gets warm enough to use epoxy I plan on mounting some large 1/4" plates to the seat.   Every other option seems to have obvious issues and I have not been able to find info on tensile strength of fasteners in 1/16" aluminum sheet.   Fasteners worry me so I'll wait to use epoxy.   Done correctly, the epoxy should be a lot stronger than fasteners since it spreads out the load.

Though I have decided to not use fasteners, I think the best suggestion (from Spike) is the well nut.   The well nut would work but the big holes concern me.    Best thing about the well nut is documented strength.

I reason I used well nuts was because that is what was used to hold my trolling motor on the first boat I owned. It held the motor no problem so I used it for the seat. I can tell you I never had a problem with strength. Even hanging up the rigger balls on bottom.

Epoxy is only as good as the bond. I'd prefer a mechanical connection every day of the week.

  8. I used well nuts to fasten downrigger stands to an aluminum seat I couldn't get to the back side off. They worked great.

What is nice about them is they are not permanent, should you decide to remove them later. Google them you'll see what they are. Basically a rubber insert that collapses as you tighten the screws. Also adds a little buffer between the plates and mounting surface.

  9. I too run a custom mount between my Main Motor (Honda 225) and my Kicker (Honda 9.9).  I found Sea Star has a hydraulic mount made only for the Port Side not the Starboard side.  Ive never used the cable steering set up but i would think its effective with the only issue being the drag of the main motor.  If your tuning hard to port the main motor lower unit would still be in the straight position unless you turn the wheel as well.  Of course i've been wrong before.

KJL the unit he is looking at is driven off the main motor steering. It uses a cable link instead of a direct rod type link. This allows the kicker to be set back from the main engine while still being steered with the main engine wheel. Nice set clean set up if you need it.

  10. LOL, I had forgot about the ones that fit in the track. I wasn't thinking clearly in my response. I do wish I had known about them prior to installing mine.

Although with as quick and easy as the tackle industry is making stuff to be mounted and removed does anyone have any greater fears for losing gear to thiefs?

I lock my riggers when I'm on a trip, but rod holders and a screw away from being gone..........

  11. I usually use Berkley XL but got to thinking on my light downrigger rods and my top shot core rods I could probably get away with a different line.

Keep in mind in NH we don't catch the fish the size you guys do. I have different setups for Kings but use the same lighter gear we fish local with when I come out for browns in the spring. I'm wondering what line everyone else is using as the backing on there brown rods, flat lines and top shot core reels? Not neccesarrily # test, as I know I will be using 10 lb, what brand and why is my real question.

I was checking out BPS excel mono you can get a bunch cheap and since I only use the top shots a couple months till the fish go deep. I figure I could save some $$ using cheaper line behind the cores and with a bunch of reels to fill it could be a significant savings. I'll likely stick with a decent brand on the flat line reels as those would be used on the riggers when I have to go deep. Actually been thinking about trying the core on the riggers to as I read about a stealthy approach doing so. Guess I'd need to have a problem catching fish with non cores first before trying.

Anyway what are you guys using and why?

    Thanks,

    Spike

  12. If you guys were going to spool up some short lead cores for the boards, would you spool up a set for each side, 2-1 color, 2-2 colors, 2-3 colors. Or should I start with a half color, a full color, 1 1/2 colors, etc?

Not to hijack but we ran 1 and 2 colors late April last yr. Obviously later you can go deeper and earlier shallower. I wouldn't bother with 1/2 cores unless your looking to go deeper like a 3 1/2 . Split shot ahead of the stick will get you down and a 1 color is like 5-7' so the difference isn't that particular at that depth (in my opinion). Deeper is a hole different story. Sometimes the extra 1/2 color can make all the difference in the world.

Again just my opinion (not just for Lake O but anywhere).

    Spike

Oh yeah the one thing about using the 2 color cores in shallower water is if you slow up for some reason (got cut off by someone) those cores will drop fast and generally hang you up. Keep that in mind when you pick the water you want to target.  Don't ask how I know about this issue (lost about $50 in lures one morning running up shallow as 6' our first time out for browns).
