  1. Here's a question for you guys. How much meat would you expect to get from a large buck? I picked my meat up from the processor today to take to Costanza's, and I was less than impressed. The tally was 48 lbs of boneless venison in total: 28 lbs of chunks to make into sausage; loin and tenderloin left whole; and 12 lbs of ground (which includes pork). However, the tenderloin and one of the loins smelled...bad. My buck was not gut-shot (the broadhead macerated the liver). I've got to wonder if there was a mix-up. The head was left intact for a Euro mount.

This was easily the largest body buck I've ever shot, and I expected more. I know that processors are going to be less thorough than doing it yourself, and it seems like everybody gripes about getting too little meat back from their deer, but you can look back at the picture from yesterday. 48 lbs of meat, including some pork. Thoughts?
Google searched and found this for comparison.Screenshot_20181106-204442_Chrome.jpeg

  2. I've been using hunt stand for a couple of years for wind direction.  As with anything, it can be off sometimes, but, for the most part it's pretty accurate.  It's also nice to look at the entire area with your scouting pins....potential stand sites kinda jump out at you.

  3. A simple survey of past players might help the directors.  I'd guess they only get feedback from complaints.

I'd like to see the AM side:

    • 5 or 6 fish with culling
    • no observer
    • a start time - maybe 15 - 30 minutes prior to pro's - just to keep everyone somewhat honest if bad weather pops up - or a call in to tournament control with another boat as witness.
    • weigh in same as above 15-30 minutes prior to pro's
    • Saturday - Sunday event - no vacation time needed
    • money back   OPTIONAL if you choose not to fish due to bad weather, but, you mush check in prior to start time to cancel.
    • captains license - no - personally don't care, but, you will lose more players than you might gain -
    • communication - no - but difficult to police with no observer

    Just my opinion.

One thing to remember is all probes are not created equal.

When you hear that someone is getting hits at 2.3 MPH, and at 48 degrees, keep in mind that the different makes of probes all read a bit different.

I think the point was...my depth raider might read 2.2....your fishhawk might need to read 2.7 to achieve the same speed.  If you run at 2.2 because that's what  you heard me say...you'd be running .5mph slower than I actually am.

Lots of good info here...but don't get in the "rut" of sticking to temp.  Keep a good eye on your graph and be sure to fish the marks.  Take note of the temps the marks are in...and in what conditions.

  5. A well deserved thank you to penny.....she was put in a touchy situation and made a decision...as players..we have to respect that decision. What transpired at the pavilion after we all made a group decision was sad for the sport...and though I was no part of the mahem....i humbly apologize to penny for All of us. Keep on mind guys....everyones safety is her responsibility.

A special thanks to the blue eyes lady crew for towing me back to the dock. Thankfully...my boat died before we cleared the pierheads...had we been in the lake when my motor died....well...my guess is we would've made the news....something everyone should remember when questioning a safety related call to end a tournament. Just because you feel safe in your craft....things happen. Lucky for me it happened in the harbor! Thanks again penny....keep up the good work.

  6. Great thread Rod.  I encourage anyone taking the time to read it to enter an event.  We started fishing the great lakes around 2010 and started fishing the LOC, then the Niagara Pro AM, and the LOTSA event.  That's about all my vacation time allows for, but, would fish them all if I had the time off.  Not only is it fun, but, you get the opportunity to mingle with other fishermen....and make new friends.

For what it's worth, I run a 22ft aluminum and usually fish with 1 other person - 5 rods.  The only time I've felt uncomfortable on the lake, the tournament control called it due to small craft advisory.

The best part of any event, you can see how you would've faired if you ponied up the big money and played with the PRO's.  You might be surprised in what you find.
