  1. Nice job! I started unhooking the same way for lakers, skippy salmon and smaller steelhead. I notice a much shorter revival time and healthier swim away ....and a cleaner boat (no laker crap). However, I did have a larger steelhead that was not completely played out throw a tornament rig and embed the hook in my knuckle last year (had to cut it out)..so be careful.

  2. Solo trip this morning.  Discovered my GPS was dead in my Humminbird, so no autopilot to start.

Started in 80ft of water trolled north.  Found a slight thermal break from about 53 degrees to 50 degrees at about 100ft.  It was pretty warm (47) clear to the bottom, but managed a couple salmon (8-10lb) and a several small steelhead (3-4lbs).  Had a salmon and steelhead double at one point….would have made a good YouTube video….solo, no autopilot, switching back and forth, rod over rod……can’t believe I actually landed them both.  It shut down about 7, so I headed deeper.  Fish, caught on riggers (down and sliders) and 300 copper; wonderbread, mixed veggie, and NK28 orange crush spoons.

Next break was 50 degrees to 46 degrees (maybe around 130ft?), this had some colder water under it and some nicer steelhead (5-7lbs). Had 5 on, landed only 3.  They put up nice aerial battles….was going to throw them back anyway so did not mind.  No salmon.  These came mostly on the sliders, orange spoons.

At about 160+ft there was another break from 46 degrees to 43 degrees.  I was marking suspended fish, but all I could catch were lakers…..even on sliders trolling 3mph.  They were pretty nice size…but.  Caught on white/green dot protroll and green fly; orange crush.

One thing I noticed today were a lot of “mini†streakers on the sonar.  Finally caught one, a skippy king.

Another fun day, but where are all the bigger kings?!

  3. Update 5/25 - A little tougher fishing today for me.  Did manage two 10-11lb Kings (rigger/spoons), and two lakers, one 17lb (dipsy and F/F).  Still having issues losing fish, particularly on the copper....changed hooks, loosened/tightened drag, changed trolling speed....lost at least 3 kings on copper after short fight, and one on just for a second....very frustrating.

  4. Good fishing, poor catching.....went 4 for 11 today, 3 low/mid teen Kings and a 10lb laker.  Could not keep them on the hook...some off seconds after the hit, others after a few minutes.  Those that were on for minutes felt like Kings.  Probably lost more today than I have since the beginning of the season.   Hooks are sharp...I checked....plus got one in the finger unhooking one of the Salmon.

Fished from the bay east in 60-100ft.  300 copper with mixed veggie spoon took more that it's share of hits.  Other hits off riggers as deep as 70 down and on sliders.  Orange nk28 crush took a few hits.  Mixed Veggie and Orange Crush have been the producers for me all of May.

No hits on 7 color core, green or blue spoons.  Had a break-off on hit with a dipsy with green dot pro-troll and fly....broke 50lb Seaguar Flouro.......first time in a long time.

Fun and frustrating day at the same time.....beats a skunk.

Photo of one of the kings...others similar size:.

  5. Thanks to the great reports from last evening I had a pretty good idea where to start this morning........30-60ft from the bay to just past shipbuilders.

Had 2 lines in at 6:15am in about 50ft, and as I was putting the third in, got a rip on the rigger....teen king.  It was a feeding frenzy for till about 8.  Went 4-6, landing two teen kings and two decent lakers.   (Lost fish felt like teen kings)  They hit mixed veggie, generic green spoon, and 42nd spoon on riggers at 45ft and cheaters.  It was dead for a while and the boat traffic was increasing so I decided I would go out deeper and look for a thermal break and some bigger kings....big mistake, waste of an hour and a half.  Barren screen temp 39-40 top to bottom out to 100+ft

Came back in shallow 35-50ft. Temp 52+ on top but dropped quickly to 42 down ~12ft.  The bite was pretty steady, landing 3 more teen kings and a laker.  Two of the kings came on 3 color leadcore.....the others on riggers,  Lures same as before.  There was no indication the bite was going to slow, but I had an appointment so I picked up about 11:30.

Ended the day 8 for 10 and had a lot of fun with a double at one point early. (That's my excuse for losing one of the fish!) :)

No photos as most fish were in the 12-15lb range and I wanted to get them back in the water quickly.

  6. Thursday went 2 for 2, the NE wind had pushed the cold water under the warmer water and scattered the fish.  I fished from 30ft to 120ft.  Found a very defined surface thermal break out at 120 foot (44 to 38 degrees) but it was only about 5 ft deep with ice water underneath.  I did manage a small steelhead and a small laker…at least no skunk.

Friday went 4 for 4. I tried in close early 15-30ft, but could not move a rod or mark a fish.  I trolled out slowly and picked up small King (like <1lb).  I marked very few fish, and was just about to call it a day when my downrigger fired with my largest King of the year 18.4lb on orange crush NK28.   On a whim (desperation) I put out a white/green dipsy, protroll and “duck fart†fly…..caught anther nice king 16.5lb and a nice ~15lb laker on it.

Saturday went 4 for 5.  Stayed outside the pack and was rewarded with 4 nice Kings 15-16+ lbs.  7 color leadcore, mixed veggie spoon and orange crush NK28 were the ticket.   One King had a lamprey on it when I netted it.  The 5th fish was a nice king that threw the hook after the second run….never got a close look, but felt the same size as the others.
