  1. Nice going Justin. I have been chasing geese and visiting grandson so I haven't fished in two weeks. I took my wife for a brief evening cruise and she caught one and dropped one between 5:00 and 5:30 pm which is encouraging. With early goose ending Wednesday and I plan to fish a bit more this week but Canadian duck open snext Saturday and NY dick in two weeks

  2. I had another walleye on that we lost on the way up and I wasn't fishing very seriously with my wife. Trapper I thought that was you by Cherry. Next time I'll swing over for a chat. I'll likely be out there mornings or evenings this week. Trapper let me know if you want to get together to fish while you're up.

  3. I have some brining for the smoker right now. Many ways to use it. I make jerky and smoke the breast of the larger birds and grill the smaller ones. I also save the leg and thigh meat and grind it and mix with pork for breakfast and Italian sausage. ( I hate to waste anything) I also sometimes have it made into sticks, pepperoni, kielbasa etc. but that can get costly. A lot of people say they don't like it but if you prepare it correctly it can be delicious.

  4. I spent the morning in a goose blind with a friend I've hunted with for nearly forty years and his son who I've hunted with since he was a teen. Today we took the two grandsons age 12 and 14 and had a great shoot. It was their first real exposure to a goose blind and they weren't disappointed as we ended up with 32 birds. The large bale blind worked great.

  5. Were you hunting with Todd? I never shot more than three times so not sure the new regs will come into play a great deal. I didn't hear of anyone shooting huge numbers. I think you would need ideal conditions with big numbers of birds to have much affect.

  6. Good going Justin. I hit the geese yesterday and stopped at Salmon River for an hour but very little fish moving there. What a difference from last week. Windy forecast for the lake this week but I haven't forgotten you.

  7. I generally run 20-25#  fluorocarbon 4 1/2' behind heavy bottom bouncers when trolling deep with stick baits, If running deep divers I use 3' of the same fluoro leader off a barrel swivel, same with down riggers. It really helps reduce chafing from zebra mussels and is less visible but still requires frequent checking. I use a snap for easy changing of the lures.

  8. Justin,

We're trolling around 1.5-2.0 so we don't need to slow down much for the walleyes but when trolling faster for kings we cut it back to around 1.5. I had a great day on the salmon river yesterday with my fly rod. Posted a nice photo on Tributary Site. Hope things work out so we can get together.

  9. We were targeting trophy walleyes and since it was caught 130 feet behind a board the fight wasn't spectacular. We actually thought we had a walleye. Nothing like the many salmon we caught on fly rods today. They are spectacular caught fresh in the river.

  10. I finally got out today. Had a rip on a dipsy out 255 over 112 fow. Got it behind the boat twice and it ripped out more wire, third time the hook pulled loose. Tried out deeper to 140 and didn't do any so trolled back into 100-110 foot range and picked up a 24 lb. on a FF off the rigger down 100. Had a couple knock offs on the riggers and caught a small steelie. Kind of a slow day for us but at least we got Tony his first salmon.

  11. Shouldn't be hard to get someone with some knowledge from this site to hop aboard and give you some tips. Best advice is higher a good guide for a day and ask many questions and take notes as you can learn more in a day than in years of experimenting on your own. Also local tackle stores are always good for information. Buy what they suggest and ask how to run it. That said, if you simply duplicate what is being posted as successful and set flashers and flies at proper depth and speed on the riggers you should be able to hit some staging salmon.

  12. Justin, Being retired makes a world of difference. I remember turkey hunting before school, teaching and coaching after school every day. Now I pick my days and avoid weekend crowds when possible. Oh and I still get out most days. Today we're NJ bound as my daughter is in labor!
