Heading up to the St Lawrence river near Alexandria Bay next month, question I have regarding musky fishing, can you catch them in June? Where do you go for them? Do you have to troll for them? We throw Stick baits all day long and catch Pike, just never a Musky. It seems everything i ever hear it's the Fall when they are caught, but cmon, they must be eating all the time to get as big as they are....Anyone have any tips they can offer?

Went out Saturday june 18 fished Carleton island we caught 4 pike smallest was 19 inches largest was 31 inches, all on crank baits all casting toward shore.....all fish were caught in about 4 feet of water. We fished Grindstone island buck bay, caught a bunch of largemouth bass back in the weeds, no pike......moved on to Delaney bay also on grindstone Island, caught 2 small pike about 17 and 19 inches both skinny, and several largemouth bass, largest was a little over 3 pounds.....we left there and went to french creek bay....struck out there, saw absolutely no signs of life except carp. Went from there and fished the shoreline back toward Carleton island, tons of panfish, a few smallmouth......then down near the lighthouse i hit the homerun i was looking for...4 pound 8 oz Smallmouth!!!! A true trophy! I got 2 pictures of her, and back in the water she went...... gotta say, many fish seemed spooked...saw at least 10 pike and they looked totally uninterested in anything we had to offer them. many bass just cruised on by as well. Calm water with blue bird skies makes it tough...especially with that clear water......All in all though the fishing was decent.

I'm just telling you what the laws are...i dont pretend to know the nuances of how they enforce or how well they enforce them. People speed on the highways all the time too. How many of them get tickets or are even stopped when they zoom by a cop?

people fish for pike with crank baits all the time...in season June. Nothing wrong with that.

Now if you had had a 16oz mag bull dawg hanging off your line, you would most probably be relating quite a different story right now though.

So as long as we are just fishing for Pike we are ok? Pike it is then!

In fact you reminded me...looks like you're fishing the thousand islands area...bass are closed season in jefferson county on the Larry until June 18 as well. No catch and release season there. Stupid rule, I know.

If you are unclear in reading the bass regs in the link...trust me I have called the DEC in Jeff cnty...confirmed.

Last year our boat was boarded by port authority and they asked us what we were doing, what we were fishing for....it was 2nd week of june, we said we were fishing for anything that wanted to bite, which is exactly what we always do, however we were throwing crankbaits...Now we see 100 fisherman fishing the week we come up there, they are all doing the same thing we are...Your tellin me they are all breaking the law? if so where are the wardens?

Yeah i know, been trying to make my way to PA here soon for that very reason.

There are catch and release seasons for some fish, but closed means you cannot legally target a species. You are correct that muskies here open June 18.

Can't say what was up with the dude and the spoon...might have been targeting pike and got an accidental 'skee. If he did the rule is to release in the water if possible, no undue time out of water (harm) otherwise. If the dude did pose for a pic with it out of season then he would technically be breaking the law.

Are you sure that law didn't chage in NY 2 years ago? I know the NY law on the St lawrence governing bass has changed and you can in fact fish for bass out of season, however you must release them immediately unharmed. I would think Muskie should be no different. I'll fish around the net for a bit here and see if I can find something to back up my statement.

Yeah i keep forgetting NY and Pa's muskie season is way different....Our's is open year round in the river.....So the rule in NY is you can't fish for them or you can't keep them prior to June 18??? We have been coming up to the st lawrence the middle of June every year for about 5 years now and none of us have ever hooked into, or even seen a muskie in the St lawrence, but we have heard about them. Right where we stay a guy (a local guy up there)caught a 50 Pounder last year in April I believe....Hey, wait a minute, that guy was fishing with a big Cleo clearly he was targeting Muskie, so what's the deal?

I live near Philadelphia PA our main body of water is the delaware River, our water temps have been unusually cool this time of year, finally hit 60 degrees in the open water, 65 in the bays. What is the water temp up there? Are the bass even on their beds yet? I'm wondering also if it was a real late spawn for the walleye as well. I know the water levels are very high, how has that impacted the fishing? Your gonna fish Mud Bay? I thought all that was in there is catfish, the water is always so nasty in there anytime I have ever been through there. Good to hear the Pike are biting, no size though really huh? No muskie? We are looking to fish Carlton Island, French Creek Bay (found a honey hole in there for Pike last year) also the backside of Grindstone is a nice area for just about everything. We are gonna try Fox and Grenadier islands this year as well....

Chris-I was @ Bath Truck caps on Saturday-the owner had a coupla buddies fishing in Sandy Pond and they were smoking the browns and walleye in the pond. Spoons flatlined behind boards. I am heading up to Oneida and Henderson starting Thursday.

Headin up to Angel rock Cottages in less than 3 weeks, gonna fish the St lawrence and ontario....appreciate all the info.

Nobodys fishing the larry???

Coming up in two weeks, just wondering how the fishing has been? I know the water levels are very high, has that hurt or helped the fishing? Any info is much appreciated.

We always go to Angel Rock cottages every year in Early June and just light up the Northern Pike On Carleton Island....in between the Island and Angel Rock cottages....Look for the dropoff to 17 feet, goes from like 9 to 17 ft quick....Right there run that entire stretch back and forth....They are there.

Capt Larry I hear ya on those gas prices....It's absolutely ridiculous! Well we are definitely going to try to get into some glass eye fishing on the Larry this year. I have never fished for glass eyes during the day, always caught them at night on 1/2 oz shad raps, rattlin rogues and cc rattlin shads. I realize fishing for them during the day is a whole new animal. From what I understand the Larry offers some pretty good Walleye fishing with quality size. We use to do very well up at Lake Wallenpaupack, but over the last few years up there the numbers have been down. (To much craziness on the lake up there during the day).

I heard reports of being able to Limit out on Walleyes during the day quickly on the Larry. I need to find those spots! LOL. Obviously Carleton Island is right across from where we are staying at Angel Rock so we have heard good things about the fishing around there. We have fished the island over the last few years and caught a ton of Pike biggest one being almost 9 pounds, and a few smallmouth and a ton of perch, but never a walleye or musky. Angel Rock yielded a 50 pound Musky I believe it was spring of last year, I think they have a picture of it up on their website. So they are there, just tough to catch.

We thought about getting our Canadian licenses, but is it really worth it? We only come up for a week. Is the fishing that much better on the Canadian side?

We do a ton of Walleye fishing on lake Wallenpaupack....We have been going up to Angel rock for years now for the awesome Bass fishing and Pike fishing, and this year we wanted to get into the Walleye fishing we hear so much about....Would love to get me a musky one of these days as well....only ever caught a few Musky biggest one being about 35 inches while fishing for Walleyes with Rattlin Rogues.

I will also be staying at Angel Rock, June 11-18th...looking for some good Walleye fishing.... Would the spots in may be pretty much teh same in June?

I never even seen a Sheepshead and I've been fishing the St Lawrence river for the last couple years...One week vacations only but we fished pretty hard.....We have caught tons of smallmouth bass in previous years even when we weren't fishing for them, we have caught some nice Pike biggest being around 8 pounds, perchand rock bass. Outside of that we haven't caught any other species of fish. I hear stories of Monster Musky, trout etc, but we just don't know enough of the area.

Good stuff guys...much appreciated....As far as the Walleyes go, we fish alot for Wallyes here in PA at Lake Wallenpaupack, we seem to have a lot of luck with Deep diving Rattlin Rogues and Shad raps....I'd imagine it should be much the same there.

Any recommendations on Shallower water fishing 10 -15 feet?

Also you guys mentioned Trout fishing, do they move into the shallows up there at all or is everything down deep much like the Salmon? As you can tell we are pretty clueless when it comes to fishing a lake of the magnitude of Ontario. The lakes we fish here in Pennsylvania mostly aren't anymore then 50 feet deep. We do have planer boards and cannonballs however we do not have down riggers.

Hi all, I'm going to be fishing lake Ontario, we are coming up next week and staying in the clayton Area We are looking to fish around mud Bay, Chaumont Bay, Grenadier island, Fox Island, Guffin Bay and Henderson Bay....We are staying for a week, in past years we mainly fished the St lawrence and did well with Northern Pike, smallmouth and a few Largemouth Bass. We would love to catch all those and perhaps a muskie or Wallye, perhaps a brown trout? Any advice?

This year we want to fish more of the Lake. We fish all artificial, with a 17 ft Tracker Deep V....any recommendations, tips or info would be much appreciated. Thanks, and best of luck to all on a great fishing season.

NYS does have a catch and release season using artifical lures only until 3rd sat in june.

Licence fees did go up but I dont know what the out of state fee is, you can call any nys baitshop that sells em to findout. Good luck on your trip.

I'm new to the board and was hoping to get some information. I will be staying in Cape Vincent Next week and will be fishing the St Lawrence and Ontario....What are the rules governing bass fishing??? I am coming from Pennsylvania where we can fish for them on the river out of season but they must be put back....I throw everything back anyway except Walleyes. Can you Target Bass now? Also did I hear correctly there was a large license increase? Any help would be greatly appreciated....Thank You!
