  1. It's not lake Ontario, but I will be visiting Schroon Lake NY next summer -- Does anyone have any experience fishing that lake for lake trout and/or salmon in July? Any information would be appreciated?
  2. I use the cannon uni troll mounts that fit in my boat's gunwale rod-holders for my cannon manual downriggers. Becuase of the torque on the mounts, they have caused the bolt at the bottom of the rod holder to bend and tear the metal rod-holder tube such that there is now a lot of "play" in the mount. This allows the downrigger to twist aft allowing the mount to dig into the fiberglass gunwale as well as make the downrigger a little difficult to use. The tear in the rod holder is getting worse and the one on the other side of the boat is starting to do the same. Is there any product or means to beef up the strength of the rod holder that the uni troll mount is designed to fit in? I've looked at other rod holders at Cabelas, Bass Pro, and West Marine - none seem any more durable or stronger than what the factory installed. Thanks for any suggestions
  3. Have not trolled for kings yet but plan on a trip to Lake Ontario next summer. What do I need in terms of reel, rod, lb test line.? For walleye and steelhead on Lake Erie I troll with downriggers and dipsys. Thanks in advance - winter project is getting ready for this trip.
  4. I am planning a 2013 trip between June 1 and Sept 30 to take my 11 yr old son fising on Lake Ontario for salmon and/or trout. We live in southern Maryland. I am interested in top 3 recommendations on where along the NY coast is the best port to fish out of, and the best time of year. Thanks in advance - much appreciate any information you can provide-- inlcuding charters and hotels. Dane
  5. We spent last weekend fishing Lake Ontario, Mexico Bay area, for salmon. The winds over labor day weekend had erased the thermocline and seemed to keep the fish from feeding. Because we are traveling up from southern Maryland, we are thinking that next year in mid-September it might be best to fish Oneida for walleye a couple days and then, depnding on the weather reports, head north to Lake Ontario or west to Cayuga. Any recommendations on where to fish for walleye on Oneida? Is mid-Sept a good time to fish for walleye on Oneida or would the time be better spent chasing salmon on Cayuga? Thanks in advance, Dane
  6. Thanks, will give it a try! We just fished Lake Ontario for salmon - same baits on Cayuga? J-plugs, flashers with trolling flies, spoons?
  7. Looking to fish for salmon and/or trout. What is the best time of year and which lake? If limited to late June/early July, which lake? Thanks in advance, Dane
  8. pwr pro 50lb min 65 lb max ? headed to fish LO this Sept for the first time -- planned on using same rod/lines as we use on Lake Erie for walleye and steelhead. 17-20 lb test - that ok? Bluenose, CVN 69 VF 142
  9. First time trolling for salmon on LO. Are the rods we use for walleye and steelhead on Lake Erie okay for salmon on LO? Other than our two downrigger rods (20lb test) we troll with 6'6" rods and 17 - 20 lb test. Understand the need for a good drag. thanks much,
  10. Thanks, must have read right past that -- thanks again.
  11. I heard you are limited to two rods per angler in NY. I serached the on-line regs but couldn't find anything that limits the number of rods you can troll with. Is there a two rod/person limit?
  12. Any experience with red line? Supposedly it catches more than other colors - I'm skeptical.
  13. What are the top 3 most productive spoons, lures, flies for Mexico Bay in mid September? Any recommendatons of best line for trolling? thanks much, Dane
  14. I am planning on keeping my boat there 16-18 Sept. We are driving up from southern Maryland to fish the lake for the first time. How long is the transit from Mike's to the lake? Thanks in advance, Dane
  15. We are planning a trip to Lake Ontario from southern Maryland in mid-September. Initial plans are for the Mexico/Pulaski area to fish for salmon. Is that a good area to go at that time of year or is there a better part of the lake for September salmon? Lodging recommendations (motel, lodge, or cabins) also appreciated. Thanks in advance,
  16. Looking for a motel, lodge, or cabins. There will be 3, maybe 4 of us on the trip.
  17. What a change from when I entered the Navy towards the end of Viet Nam! Great to see so many Americans taking pride in this great land and the men and women who guard our freedom. It was my honor to wear the cloth of this nation for over 30 years -- and my eyes still get a bit wattery every time I hear our national anthem and see Old Glory wave. We do have so much to be thankful for in this land and we owe so much to the men and women who started us on this journey back in 1776 and the ones who are keeping us free today. It's amazing to me that we have so many young men and women willing to give their all -- as well as their parents who raised them. God bless this great land and the soldiers, sailors, and airmen who keep us free!
  18. We are planning a trip from southern Maryland to the Mexico/Pulaski NY area to fish Lake Ontario for salmon 16-19 September. Any suggestions/recommendations on lodging would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Dane
  19. I am planning our first-ever trip from southern Maryland to fish Lake Ontario this fall. We are limited to early September or late October and will be fishing in the general area of Oswego. Any advice on which time period is better for salmon and steelhead? We will be fishing from a 22' boat with downriggers and dipsys. Also looking for recommendations on places to stay. Any advice on lures, techniques, etc will be very much appreciated. Most of our experience is fishing for rockfish on the Chesapeak Bay and walleye on Lake Erie. Thanks in advance, Dane
  20. Thanks for the warm welcome! It appears our plans for a mid-September trip to the lake have to change. What would be better, early September or late October? We are hoping to catch salmon and steelhead. Also, where would be the best place to go out of for early Sept or late Oct? Thanks in advance, Dane
