  1. ive read talk in this forum of guys fishing copper down the chute and letting out whatever length they need to reach a certain depth. obviously that cant be done with planer boards. but, do you reel in all that copper each time you hook a fish on another rod? or is there a way to work around that? i just worry about tangles with the copper. thanks, mark

    fished oswego this morning. it was a nice morning until the rain started. once it started, it didnt let up. so much for passing showers. went 4 for 4 on stickbaits fishing solo. kind of tough with only two rods but i didnt really find any concentrations of fish. seemed to be scattered. most fish were shallow but i did get one over 30 FOW. there is a ton of bait in the shallows now. the birds were hitting them hard in the morning right on the surface. they were picking up some good size bait. for a minute i thought i was striper fishing on the cape with all that life out there. anyways, aside from the rain it was a good to be out. at least the wind wasnt blowing. best, mark

  3. Mark, After tonight I am off the next 9 days so I am game for some fishin. I know Lowrance stands behind their products and I love my unit but I am pissed off about this. Almost everyone I know who has one of these HDS units has had to send them back for repairs. I need my unit for this week and weekend and now I"m screwed :@ I'm taking time off from work and I can't enjoy it the way I want to. But maybe its my fault with the voltage problem I had but the thing was working fine after I installed the alternator. My plan was next year to buy another one so I don't have to run split screen but I might just go with a Hummingbird instead.

    rob, i understand your frustration. there was no resetting mine, it was dead. stored indoors, less than a year old and it just died. a quick fix although expensive might be to get a $200 lowrance unit. the connections might be the same, plug in and go. i wish you could fish in the morning. im going to oswego early in the morning by myself. gonna smack the browns early then go out a little deeper and look for some big lakers. i work 2 out of the next 10 days so let me know when you want to fish. best, mark

  4. rob, great report! funny stuff. you were right in my neck of the woods. call me next time your up. sorry to hear about the HDS. mine did the same exact thing. makes me wonder if i should stick with lowrance. shopping for a second sonar so i have a backup. fishing blind sucks! best, mark

    had a great day in oswego today. picked at a few first thing but things really picked up late morning after a couple showers passed through. only saw 3 other boats and no charter boats which was kind of surprising. had the place all to ourselves from 10am on! jr thundersticks on big boards were hot. gold chrome/perch, rainbow. all steelhead and atlantics were on tandem streamers on the riggers. got a few browns on small michigan scorpian spoons in green hammer with copper back but most were on the thundersticks. hooked a really large fish that took off like a king. didnt come up to the surface, just ran straight back as soon as i got tight. wish i knew what it was! most of the browns were above average and we got a few pigs. great day on the water. best, mark

  6. mark, i havent used hollow ace before but i have some experience with JB hollow spectra for splicing and wind on leaders for tuna. specifically casting wind ons for heavy spinning gear where you need to reel in the leader and cast out the connection thus having the need for a smooth connection. the connections when done right are amazingly strong. i like your idea for copper line, not sure how it would work though. need to experiment there. you might like to do some research here;

  7. sean, sorry to hear of your misfortune. keep the heat on them, im sure you can get them to do something. 100hrs on a modern outboard is nothing and to consider your usages as "commercial" is ridiculous. im in the market for a new outboard and will certainly take your warranty experiences into consideration when selecting brand. good luck, mark

  8. i have a lowrance HDS on my boat and last year i had it set on 200KHZ for the whole season. i put downriggers on the boat this year and noticed that i can only mark my downrigger weights when i have it set to the 83KHZ. i havent been marking alot of fish or bait so far this year so i dont know how the 83 freq. will perform. is it important to mark your downrigger weights when fishing? what frequency is best for trolling or does it depend on what type of fishing your doing? ie: shallow or deep etc. just looking for tips on how to make the best use of my sonar. thanks, mark

  9. had a good day on cayuga yesterday. did'nt hook alot of fish but the fish that we did catch were big. landed several lakers with the biggest being 27" and also landed a nice brown. lakers were all caught on the riggers with spoons and all different kinds of depths. the big one came from 62' down over 120'. the brown was on 10 color leadcore/ rogue jr. stickbait over 100' FOW. marked a few fish but not alot and the only bait i marked was on the bottom in 300 FOW. nice peaceful day on the water. i had my buddy jeff in town who doesnt get out much so i let him reel in all the fish but i sure wish i grabbed that leadcore rod when i heard the drag zinging! best, mark

  10. lilboat, congrats on a great fish. i was out there that morning as well in the 16' duckboat fishing solo with the planer board mast and otter boats. we were both fighting fish the first time i passed you. ended up going 6 for 8 all browns. only fished 3 1/2hrs as i was having motor trouble(turned out to be a bad spark plug). nice to see you guys getting it done in a small boat too. best, mark

  11. launched at long point today and trolled south to milleken. landed 8-10 lakers in 2-3hrs. all on riggers with michigan stingers, wonderbread and orange. 60' and 65' down over 70-85 FOW. most action was a couple miles north of milleken. great day to be on the water, no other boats and finally got a rest from the wind! best, mark

  12. thanks guys. do you think that 10' section of mono between backing and copper is a must or can i get braid to stay in the planer board release without too much issue? id like to avoid another knot in the system but i dont want false releases either. best, mark

  13. im looking for some advice on how to best utilize the gear i have. here is what i have to run;

    2- downrigger 8'6" 10-20# rods with daiwa mooching reels loaded with 20# flea flicker.

    1- okuma copper rod 12-27#, 300' copper

    1-9'6" accudepth 15-30# with daiwa 57LC, 50# power pro for mag dipsies.

    1-9' med. 12-30# accudepth with 47LC, 50# power pro for standard dipsies.

    1-9' med. heavy 12-30# accudepth with 57LC and 10 color leadcore.

    2-9' med. 12-30 accudepth with okuma magda 30 with 15# trilene big game for planer boards.

    dual reel planer board mast with two otter boats.

    2- scotty strong arm 30 downriggers.

    i know it changes by the season but im planning to hit the spring browns hard and then i would like to follow the kings until they move out deep during the summer. then most of my time will be spent in the fingerlakes for lakers and rainbows until the kings come closer to shore. i normally fish either by myself or with one other and can fish 3 if the conditions warrant but no more than 3. any tips on how to best utilize what i have? what lures on what rigs etc.? ex. spoons on riggers, flies on dipsies etc. id appreciate any advice you have. best, mark

  14. I just rigged up my first copper setup today and found it difficult to put on the reel without kinking so im a little concerned about fishing with it. do you have any tips for trouble free fishing with copper? i used howies 45#, 300' on a okuma magda 45 with 50# power pro backing and a 50' 20# leader. i used albright knots for all of the connections. also, how much backing do you normally put in the water when fishing off boards or off the chute both with leadcore and copper? thanks alot, mark
