  1. We got an 8HP Tohatsu Electric start around 2011 and it seems to charge the batteries pretty well. A couple times we had very low batteries and just trolled an hour or so till we could start the main motor.

No issues with the motor either, much quieter than the old 2 cycle. Pushes our 21' very well too.

  2. Thanks for your comments everyone. The Insight Pro Maps are a free item with this offer. Navionics is what I use now and it serves me well. I can change to Navioncs easy enough and not have wasted any money. I read where this unit has a tendency to freeze and must be restarted to get it back up and running.. Perhaps that was an early problem and has since been corrected. I will be going for this unit and installing it on my boat over the winter.

We used our Elite 7 Chirp all year and no freeze ups.

  3. Just an FYI.  We checked it out yesterday early AM and everything is locked up at the Coast Guard station as far as docks and there are no docks on the ramp itself. We opted for the public launch and that is a real mess because there is a foot deep hole in the pavement surface right in the middle of the launch and there is also a large submerged rock near the dock which is impossible to see in dim early morning light and I nearly wiped out my SS prop on it  backing out. In addition despite power loading being forbidden there is a pile of rocks in the northern/center section of the area out from the ramp strongly suggest it is being done and when low water conditions prevail it will be impossible for larger boats to avoid it coming in or going out.

    Hook into any fish?

  4. We had our speed wheel develop a hard spot in it, the wheel would not spin freely on the axle.  Make sure that isn't the problem.

How much cable did you have out?  Ours will give strange readings when there is a lot of blowback (over 100' of cable out).  Check yours at 25' (to eliminate blowback as a cause) at a couple different speeds to see if this is contributing to your problems.

  5. Twist it six times and insert the loop. Click it shut. Done.

As a side note, we still run Scotty clip releases off the tail of our balls and while we've never gotten tangled, there's a 0.5 mph difference in how the Moor speed probe reads depending on whether there's a rod attached. We compensate for it, but it took a few years to figure out what was going on and why our downspeed was slower than at the surface, even without current. We thought for awhile that it was the calibration on the probe, until we actually looked at the speed after we'd taken a hit. Epiphany!

Like they say, always learning or never learning. It just takes some of us longer

    Gator:

What do you think is the cause of this .5 diff? Maybe it changes the angle of the probe when a rod is attached?

I have found with our Moor, once you reach a certain amount of blowback, the readout slows considerably.

  6. 140-180 Fow. Kings were 18-10-6-2lbs. Laker was 12 lbs. Lost a big king-bent the snap swivel open.

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

I was just remembering that I need to get some snap swivels.  I had the same thing happen a few years back, sucks losing the fish and the hot lure.  Will only use crosslocks with a pound test rating now, like Torpedo's.

  7. Welcome to the site. You can look at the gimbal mounts for downrigger mounting if you have rod holders built into the boat? See pic.

Keep an eye on the reports of other fishermen here to get an idea where to start.
