  1. you guys think this set up is alright? its attaching to a dipsy rod with copper line. anything i should remove or add?
  2. dont know why i said always, think i meant to say that somewhere else lol. Yea i just finished setting it up im going to try it tonight or this weekend, not to deep, just see how she works out
  3. yep exactly, i checked my witter this morning and guys were saying that the kings were all around 80-120 feet. It's not going to be the same everyday so just go out and put lines out at all sorts of depth, see what you catch. I've spent the last house trying to set up my dipsy rod, man copper wire is a pain in the ass, kept fraying on me and had to keep cutting it down.
  4. for some strange reason I never thought about using only 1 motor lol I'm going to try that tonight. I've always set up a dipsy rod with copper line, going to use a white/green spin doctor with a blue and green fly and see how that works out too.
  5. if you want to have some real fun, when the air show is on in toronto, take your boat to just outside toronto island right across from the nude beach. I'm sorry I don't know what side it is but yes it's the nude beach just quickly look through some binoculars to confirm lol. The jets will fly over your head so low that you won't be able to hear yourself think, and it's probably the coolest thing I've even seen in my life.
  6. Does the amount of the bow matter when your trolling? Last night when we were trolling with the riggers, the rods had such a bow in them that the rod tip almost touched the water, is this too much? And a little off topic, but is I wanna try and get a king salmon, are they mostly sitting at the very bottom?
  7. I didn't catch any on sunday, we went out when the king of the lake was finished, everyone said that most of the fish were outside scarborough though. And there were a lot of mid 20's that were caught. Guess you just didn't have the luck with you. I went out around 6 until 9, 1 fish hit and spit the hook out and that was it, nothing else not even bait fish for the rest of the night. This was outside ajax between 80-170 feet lol. I wanna try to start going in the morning.
  8. Are soft baits any good for trying to catch salmon in deep water? I have a few soft baits they are about 2.5-3 inches long and they look like a fish with a single hook coming out the back. The one I have pretty much looks like the second one from the top.
  9. I'm not a pro but I'm sure any input can help. I run clear 30 lbs test line. When I go out, most of the time we run spoons, and once in a while a fly with a spin doctor attached. My best advice for you is to just experiment and see what works best for you. Take tips from these forums and you'll have a blast. Where's your homeport if you don't mind me asking [ Post made via BlackBerry ]
  10. What do you mean by blowback. [ Post made via BlackBerry ]
  11. Sorry I sent you the wrong info, its the port whitby tourney this weekend not the salmon hunt. [ Post made via BlackBerry ]
  12. Yea I'm gunna try that today, go a bit slower and try trolling south instead of west/east this time. Salmon hunt starts this weekend too I believe so I'm sure lots of people will be out. [ Post made via BlackBerry ]
  13. we have 2 inboard motors so I'm not sure on how to change anything to do with the engine, its a 36 foot searay, around 36 i think. I'm going to try the north/south idea it sounds like it could help a little bit. I kept thinking we were too deep but 2 days ago our friend caught 15 fish in 100 feet of water, then next day everyone in the king of the lake tourney said they were around 200 feet of water so I guess fish can be at any depth lol
  14. I would think anywhere around downtown toronto would be nice, I believe they do a awesome firework show at Toronto Island. I've seen it once I don't know if they still do it, you could give them a call. As for driving your boat at night, a GPS and or Radar wouldn't hurt. make sure your nav lights are on and if your near the downtown core, a lot of the light from the buildings will reflect off the water so that could help you a bit.
  15. yea, 1 guy at my marina that does charters told us he runs close to 300 feet of line out his boat, this guy catches a lot of fish too.
  16. Thanks for the reply, I could try that idea, the slowest my boat will go though is 3-3.5, going into the waves that brings her down to 2.5ish. Maybe the current could be going faster then my indicated speed though ill have to watch the action of the lure tonight. [ Post made via BlackBerry ]
  17. I"ve tried a lot of the tips given on these forums, I'm marking bait fish on the fish finder but still no bites. I've tried putting the lines 10 feet behind the ball and 50 plus feet behind the cannonball, still no luck. Hopefully some of the pros here can help me. Here is how I fish on an average day, and if you tell me what I'm doing wrong that woulf be awesome. Depth: 100-120 feet between oshawa and ajax Lures: mostly blue, silver, green and yellow. Spindoctor with fly used once. Time: between 4-7 on most days. Wind: calm wind, west direction on most nights. Speed: 2.7-3.5 mph If you need more info I'm sure I can provide it to you [ Post made via BlackBerry ]
  18. I didn't know about the free line, ill be there this afternoon for sure lol. im starvin marvin atm
  19. 12 fish? damn, i have a hard enough time right now catching 2 if I'm lucky . It's not that it really bugs me, I just didn't really understand it but yea when you think about how many we put back into the lake it doesn't seem a lot at all.
  20. I could be wrong here, but today when I was watching the tourney I saw atleast 30+ coolers going in for the weigh in. Now on average, each cooler had 4-5 fish, that's 150+ salmon in one day. Now I have nothing against fishing what so ever, as long as you either throw the fish back or eat it which im sure most people do, but instead of saying " ok guys bring your 5 heaviest fish" why not just bring two in?. In the end it will work out to the EXACT same, and you'll have more fish left in the lake. I'm not trying to sound like some activist or anything, I just don't understand the logic behind this tourney and the number you can bring in. You're still keeping your heaviest fish, so what difference would it make if you could only bring 2 instead of 5. If you can correct me please do. I'm only saying this because I know there are guys out there who won't do anything with the fish they catch and it seems like a waste. In the past I've seen guys just throw the dead fish back into the lake, which is ok I guess something will eat it, but you could have done something better like given it to someone. I'm only 22 I'm still new to the whole tournament thing so if I'm wrong on how King of the Lake works please inform me. I just honestly see the whole 5 fish thing completely pointless when you do the math.
  21. nice catch, I see you holding that giant fish up in your kitchen, I don't think it's a good idea eating Salmon that large out of our lake though to be honest. The amount of mercury and crap in a 19 lbs fish is highly above our recommended intake. I guess once in a while won't kill you though.

Getting a lot of hits but lures may need sharpening because they are knock offs. ====================
  23. yea we normally fish in around 120 feet of water, I just always thought that if the lure was to close to the cannonball, it keeps the fish away. could be wrong though,
  24. Hey everyone, I've been downrigging for a long time now and have gotten a decent amount of fish but I'm just wondering if this should be improved. When we put the lines out, I will throw out about 15-20 feet of line, and then hook the line up to the cannon ball if you understand what I mean. Does this sound too short? the lure I guess is only 20 feet from the cannonball and it seems way to short for me. I've heard of people throwing close to 100 feet of line out before hooking it up to the cannon ball. Any input is greatly appreciated.
  25. Name: howitzer Location: Whitby Home Port: Whitby Boat Name/Type: Searay I fish for: Salmon/Trout ================== Hey everyone new to the forums. 22 years old and have been out on Lake Ontario fishing since I was little. Came on these boards hoping to learn a few tricks on how to catch some more fish this summer. Also looking forward to going into the tourneys this year it should be fun. Right now we have a 30ish foot searay with 2 big john down riggers and fish for salmon and trout. So far we've been out about 6 times and have had a lot of luck just a few miles out in front of the Pickering Power Plant.
