  1. It's time for me to upgrade my electronics for Lake Erie walleye fishing. I see a Lowrance Elite7 Chirp with Lake Insight Pro Mapping included on sale for $499.00. I have been running Lowrance GPS/Finders on two boats and I am familiar with their formats. I have however only used Navionics mapping with them. Does anyone have any experience with this unit? I'm not in a hurry to change but this caught my attention.
  2. An update on my post. The Yamaha F90 is on the boat. I did the break in procedure. Took it out of Catt. Creek for walleyes. Engine idles @ 700 RPM and that gives me 1.8-2.0 GPS speed. I can control the engine RPM at the tach in 50 RPM increments. Took it down to 500 RPM and was trolling at .1-.2 GPS speed. Engine runs smooth at those low RPMs. So I have great control in wind and current. Engine is quiet and very powerful with a lot of low end torque. Runs my boat just a touch over 40 MPH GPS speed. I'm a happy guy.
  3. Those reports sound great. I have had one other four stroke for a short time on another boat a Suzuki 70hp and it was a dream. Well boat should be ready tomorrow and the walleye reports are OK. Giving it a test soon.
  4. Off Sturgeon Point last week and my 90hp Evinrude broke a ring and took out the power head. I limped back in and made it to the launch. It was a great engine and trolled very nicely. It's a '93 boat, motor and trailer that I bought new. I am repowering with a Yamaha F90 four stroke. I am having the Automatic Trolling Switch installed that allows me to control engine RPM's in 50 rpm increments at the wheel. Since trolling is a way I use the boat a lot I am wondering if anybody else has this engine and how it trolls?
  5. Thanks guys. I am familiar with the location of all three ramps. Many years ago I put in at Dexter and fished out into the bay. However I caught all the Eyes in the current tight up to the dam. So I hear and read about Chamount Bay for spring walleye and our place is in Cape Vincent. I usually trailer right by and go to Onieda for the day. Thought about giving this another shot after many years. Dennis
  6. Is there a recommended launch to fish this area from? Can you get out from the launch in Three Mile Bay on 12E or is it a better shot from Chamount.
  7. EBAY Search suicide knobs
  8. I have four Daiwa 47lc reels that I want to set up for Lake Erie walleyes. I assume they would be set up in pairs. So if I make a pair of 5 color reels and a pair of 7 color reels I should be good to go on the Buffalo end of Lake Erie. If not what combo should I make up?
  9. I observe a few boats in the late evening jigging this area. They do pick up fish but not like we do trolling the same water. I always say I will try the large bucktails or the blade baits like a Cicada but I never do.
  10. What would be your thoughts as to why walleye show up later in the season around Carlton Island and don't seem to be there early? My thought is the bait. As water temps change schools of bait come in from the lake and the walleye schools are right there coming in from the lake as well. Thoughts?
  11. Tim, That's the same type of patterning I get as well. But then the laundry list of names and where they are grows. I have transferred the waypoints to my Navionics App on my PC. That gives me a nice view of the patterns but the PC is not in the boat with me. As you do I will take a few in the center of the patterns and name them/save them to the boat unit. Dennis
  12. As a new fishing starts I have many waypoints on my GPS that I caught fish on last season. Will they be good again this year who knows? How do you guys sort, save or delete your waypoints from season to season? Dennis
  13. Thanks everyone for the info. I'll experiment a little with this during the upcoming season. Dennis
  14. Tim, I do use a cross lock snap on the end of the floro. If I use a lure like a spoon or spinner I make sure I have a swivel in there somewhere. But using stickbaits or lures that track straight I try to go simpler and lighter is better theory. Dennis
  15. I fish a lot in the St. Lawrence River near Cape Vincent. I'm not always fishing for Pike but they are always in the mix. Tying directly to my 10# florocarbon leader I have been bit off several times. I fish with 20# braid and attach 4' of floro to that. I have been using the micro leaders from Eagle Claw and they work fine but do get kinked in the net etc.I saw a TV program where they used titanium leader material and tied directly to their braid on one end and to the lure on the other just as if it were floro or mono. But I like your idea of 80# or 100# floro and I am going to try that. How do you think it will affect the casting and action of some smaller baits like X Raps or Husky Jerks? Dennis
  16. When tying on your lure of choice does anybody tie the titanium leader wire instead of the "out of the package" steel leader with snap and barrel swivel? If so is there a knot you prefer to tie to your main line and to the lure? Dennis
  17. I have been using the Walker diver for a couple years now but always wondered how the Dipsy diver might be different. Dennis
  18. I use this for everything on my boat and trailer. http://www.greengrease.net/ Dennis
  19. Yes I know of the model at Dick's. Some guys bought these but then did not like how heavy they can be. That is not a factor to me. Just thought someone might want to get rid of one. Dennis
  20. Looking for a larger heavy rubber landing net suitable for Walleye fishing.
  21. Bill Saiff operates out of that area and publishes a newsletter which you can glean the info that you seek. http://www.billsaiffoutdoors.com/nl08.htm Thanks for that. Dennis
  22. Yes Mud Bay is just a short ride. Tell me I can fish off there. Dennis
  23. Henderson is reachable for me and Chaumount Bay is very close. I am right at the mouth of the St.Lawrence. I have the full Navionics mapping of the area on my Lowrance HD8. Dennis
  24. My boat is located in Cape Vincent for the summer. I have short access to Lake Ontario. If I wanted to get out into the lake to troll for trout and salmon where would be a good starting point in terms of a landmark, island or GPS point? Dennis
  25. Agree. If the head comes off to replace the head gasket definitely send the head out to be checked for cracks and how true it is. Use good gaskets from Mercruiser to put it back together also. The aluminum block is an open deck design and must have a good sealing gasket. Know how to torque and then re-torque the head. Keep all the pushrods in the SAME HOLE when reassembly is done. Valve adjustment is by the length of each pushrod. There is no valve lash adjustment beyond that. Much, much more. Dennis
