  1. From what info I found on this forum and iBoat, one snap swivel attaches to the end of the downrigger cable, the other to the ball. Then it gets fuzzy for me... You take your main line (?) or you take your leader (?) and make a few wraps around the inside cylinder of the release (which end, white or black?), and tighten down the cap to adjust the spring tension that holds down the line?

Can someone enlighten me please? Thanks!!

  2. I routinely fish Lake O out of my 16'Lund - was out today . Watch forecast and err on side of caution .

I would suggest fishing out of Sandy Creek - great & protected launch, easy access to deeper water - its a long run from I Bay to deeper water and there are many 'Marine challenged' boaters that use that launch

That adds some confidence, thank you! How long of a run is it out of Sandy Creek? It's not much farther for me than to I-Bay.

  3. Braved Canandaigua and Keuka in the past few weeks. Winds were under 8mph, and weather was fair; even with some rambunctious boat traffic, felt pretty safe in my little 16'-er!

Now, reading the amazing reports from Lake O, I've got King fever :( and I'm sort of obsessed with the idea of going out there and catching one of those monsters...

So, if there's such a thing, can someone recommend a "safer" area where to go out of on Lake O in a smaller boat? The I-bay launch is closest to where I live. How far out will I have to go before I hit fishable depths? I'll invest in a VHF radio and try to befriend someone on a larger boat just for safety's sake...

    Thanks for the continuing advice...

  4. So... I am chuckling a little to myself re-reading this post. After the recent trip to Keuka Lake I verified that neither the fishfinder nor my eyes (or brain) were broken. It's just that it's kind of hard to try to make out fish hooks or bait clouds when they ain't there! Turns out I just had to get out on a lake where there is some good activity, is all. But, that tutorial is definitely great, nevertheless! :)

  5. I bought some spoons that I had to put my own hooks and splitrings on.......the hooks are working out GREAT ............today I had a good landlock on came out of the water two times then thrashed around on top got him coming to the boat !!!!!!!! gone.......the spoon came back with just the splitring on it ?????

So what's the best to buy and where !!!!

    Thanks

    Ed

    Try silver soldering them shut

  6. Are you trolling Lake O or the fingerlakes?

Haven't had the... proverbial... to get out on Lake O (yet) but have braved Keuka and Canandaigua with great success. So, I'd say mostly the Finger Lakes... Currently I have a 4-dipsy setup going, the outside two on 3 setting and the inside two on 0. If the water cooperates and I don't make any sharp turns I do all right not getting them all tangled, but I can't help but want to be like "the big boys" and get myself a rigger.

  7. Amazon is currently running a 20% off all Sports & Outdoors items if you have an Amazon Rewards card, and I want to splurge on a downrigger. I have a small 16' shallow V boat, so I can't have something massive. I am also looking to spend no more than $130-$150 with tax. Here are some options below.

What else would I need besides one of these? I think they all come with 100'-150' of steel cable, plus releases. I assume I'd need some balls? :o Anything else?

    Thanks!

    Cannon Lake Troll $130

    Cannon Easi-Troll HS $174

    Scotty Depthmaster Display $157

    Scotty Laketroller Display $83

  8. 6:30am to 10am. Was a little nervous at first taking out our small boat on a bigger lake (only done Hemlock and Canadice before), but it handled quite well. Limited with 6 LTs totaling 14lbs or so by 10am and the weather started turning sour. Trolled the west side from Branchport south to the bluff and back. Had a 4-dipsy spread going, in 80-100 FOW. Everything we put down caught a fish. Watermelon seed NK 28, a gold NK 28 and two purple and green spindoc/fly combos (not that great with the names). After skunking out the past two visits to Canadice, this was a refreshing trip. :)

  9. Lots of great information from guys that know... Most of us that have been jigging a long time have had days where we caught lots of good fish from blank screens, and had bad fishing when we were marking a ton of fish... Don't always let the screen dictate where you fish,, As you gain experience and get into some lakers you will compile a bunch of "go to" areas..

One thing I didn't see mentioned that many laker fisherman do, trollers and jiggers alike is look for bait as oppossed to looking for fish... Typically, if you find good concentrations of bait not far off bottom there will be lakers close by, and the bait balls are much easier to spot than individual pods of fish. I look for bait first... This time of year, if I see bait lets say 60 feet down in 75-FOW, I start fishing not far from the bait.. There will be lakers around, even if your screen doesn't show them... btw, thanks to Chad for getting me back on LOU... I have been trying for over a year to log in, and been unable to, despite jumping through hoops, new passwords, username ,everything.. I look forward to some good discussions.. Glad to see a lot of the "jigging crowd" here as well... This is a trolling board more or less, but I bet some of them will "come over to the dark side" the first time they start hooking into big lakers with a one hande bass rod, instead of heavy trolling gear. bob

As long as this thread's turning into a thread about jigging, I wanted to respond to this... I'm not sure about others but if you "strip" fishing down to catching fish, I think some people might "come over to the dark side." However it's a lot more than just that, at least for me. It's fun trolling around a lake. You get to enjoy a slow boat ride, look around and enjoy the sights, AND catch fish, if you know what you're doing. You also don't have to be constantly "doing something" and can enjoy a sandwich or a beer without feeling like you're wasting your time if your jig isn't in the water or else you're going to miss "the big one." I still really do want to at least be able to make a choice, knowing that I can catch fish with both methods, and do each depending on the day.

  10. That is some great tutorial all in one spot there, thanks Hermit!!!

One thing I didn't see is what, in my mind, is the biggest hurdle or time waster. Maybe it's just so obvious that it doesn't require a mention, but how do you FIND the spot where you settle in and decide to do some jigging? Do you just move around at slow speed watching your FF window until you hit a concentration of fish?

  11. Hey guff, thanks for the kind words and prodding me into action. I have resurrected my old site, parts of it aren't working but the jigging tutorial is there. (Link in sig line.) It definitely needs rewriting as I wrote that in '06 I think but the gist is the same.

At first glance I'd say- no longer rec a swivel between leader and braid. Not really necessary, a double uni knot works fine. I actually didn't re-read the whole thing as I spent most of the time just getting the old site running again. I'll be updating it this week I hope.

You rock! There goes my night... :$

  12. Not sure if this is the best area to post but in case people didn't know (I just found this), there's a $10 Mail in rebate on 300yd spools of Stealth line, so a 300yd spool of Braid will be $13 after rebate at FishUSA. I don't think it matters where you purchase it from but the link below is hosted by FishUSA.

    Link to rebate below:

With how much money we spend on this hobby, I figure every bit helps. :)

  13. How does one become good at this? The little boat I bought came with an Eagle Fisheasy 245. I've read the manual for it but I still have no confidence that I really know how to read what I see on the screen. I don't use the dummy Fish Track mode, since I'm trying to learn "the real way." Are there any good tutorials online or anything that would make me better at this?

    Thanks!

  14. Hermit/Guff - I fall into the potential Jigger category and the sound of a tutorial puts a smile on my face. I have never caught anything jigging before, however you report there has encouraged me to give it another try... It seems all the good Jigging reports usually come from Keuka.

    Thanks!

x2. All I've managed to be able to get jigging is see my jig falling and going up in the fish finder window. That was fun. Yup. :shake:

  15. Use two dipsy's .....one rod main line...connect the first dipsy on a left hand 3 setting....the second dipsy upside down on a. Right hand 3 setting,...be sure to use a tandem barrel swivel to make sure they can act separately.

Then deploy as normal with a good bottom fishing jig rod (for stiffness )...this will give you a counter rotating action guaranteed to impress your newbies

If the rotation is too fast and wide just set on lower #.

Be sure to have the same leader length on each dipsy to keep out of balance vibration to a minimum.

Guaranteed to catch every fish around with whirling disease! ;)

Just stand clear of the stern when rig surfaces to avoid black eyes, contusions, and temporary disorientation as the spinning rig exits the water.....have fun, and no don't use a second lure on a dipsey...criminy sakes!

    I'm really serious...and crazed....:drunk:
