I have an Ice Master adaptor on an older Dewalt 18 volt drill. Use either 8 inch eskimo or 6 inch strike master augers.

No secondary handle on it, just hold it against my body to keep it from torquing. Also keep the RPM's low when cutting.

Yea - guess I didn't think about that, but makes total sense.

I  tried pulling floating raps earlier in the season, and the results weren't that great; I'll  try some thin spoons with color and see if that produces better.

One of the problems I have with the kayak is that if I'm running 2 rods (especially if they're running at different depths)  is that  it's easy to get tangled up and loose fish.  I actually lost a fish and a brand new Sutton 50 when I tried landing it on the wrong side of the yak a few weeks ago, so I'm trying to keep it simple.

Based on what I've been seeing on the fish finder and what folks posted, Looks like I'm gonna work on getting my presentation a bit deeper.

Here's how I attached mine. Had to add the track and ball to the stern. I remove it and place behind the seat before transporting the yak down the road.

Been out in the kayak from the south end lanch 4 times now and have some questions.

I started using leadcore this year, and I'm pulling Suttons off a 10 ft leader on 3 colors with 50-75 feet of backer off looking for bows.

I been hugging the east shore, staying anywheres from 70 - 25 FOW with lots of bait and hooks showing up on the fish finder. Hard to tell a true speed, thw GPS on the humminbird bounces anywhere from 1.5 to 2.5 mph.

Only fish I've gotten so far are lakers, ( actually had 4 hooks and landed 3 yesterday in 3.5 hours of fishing with nice 26 inches long one on a quick measure before releasing).

Not that I'm complaining about the laker action - just trying to figure out what I'm missing on how to target rainbows better.

Also looking to see how others let out their leadcore... from the yak it's not pulling itself from the reel when I'm paddling. I ended up putting the rod in the front rod holder pointing almost straight backwards, it's right in the way of a clean rowing stroke, and still not very effective until the 3rd color is almost fully stripped.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Just got word that the FD responded this morning to Canadice lake for 2 males that have been in the water for >30 minutes.

Sounds like everyone's OK, and it's only check-overs by the EMS crew.

Just a quick reminder to everyone to be safe while out there... the air maybe warm, but the water temps are still low.

If your looking at a cheap (>$100) replacement, look at a Humminbird PiranhaMax 197C.   I use a 196 (black & white) on the ice for lakers, and never never have a issue seeing a 1 oz jig in 180 FOW.

Spend quite a bit of time jigging from a kayak out there.

Lakers there can be real finicky, don't be afraid to change up colors or jigs if your seeing alot of chasers with no hits. I usually carry an assortment of plastic flukes, some PK lure products and swedish pimples.

Looking to hit either Canadice or Hemlock this weekend with the kayak and was planning on trolling floating rapalas to target browns.

Because of the lack for rain or significant run-off, wondering if I'd be better off targeting lakers..

Can anyone offer up suggestions?

Stopped by the pier this AM to check-up on the boathouse.... Ice has broken up pretty good, but has moved north and pretty much plugged up the North end again. 

Not sure about South end - assumption would be that the winds from the south opened it up.

Been almost 25-30 years since I was on the pond in a canoe. Looking to hit it with the kayak, looking for some general tips if anyone willing to share.

... I did however feel bad for Fishy (Gerry) because some loser actually stole a brand new Okuma reel from the box while Gerry was busy waiting on customers. Thankfully those folks are the exception to the rule because it is tough enough to run a small business without that S@#$ happening...

I use my hbird 597ci HD all year for jigging 200+ fow without any issues.

Came off the ice at 2 PM. Open water around the docks, but still enough ice to get out.

8 inches of ice over 170 FOW but the quality is dropping.

Unless we get some nights below freezing, it's gonna end very soon.

I'm no expert at jigging lakers... I'm still learning things everytime I go out to harass them. 

I generally jig either Candaice  (90 FOW)  and Keuka (180 FOW) both open water from kayak or on the ice.

For my ice fishing rigs, I'm running 12 lb Fireline, with a 5-10 ft. fluoro leader attached.  The leader is attached with with either a uni or albright knot; I have a snap swivel on the end to attach the jigs / spoon. - some people suggest a swivel to attach the leaders,but I like the knot better.  Running a longer leader like that is nice because I know when the fish is close to the ice when the knot comes through the last eyelet on the rod.  It will also feed through the line guide on the reel, so you're not stuck hand-lining in the last few feet of line to bring the fish onto the ice.

I use 1 oz or 1.5 oz jigs and spoons, and in 180 FOW you can feel the jig tap bottom with no issue, any strike is the same thing... I can actually hold the rod perfectly still and watch the tip  twitch when they hit it; no stretch at all in the line.

Yesterday the kids were in the heated shanty, and I was on the open ice for a couple of hours, and I didn't have issues with icing running a low profile baitcaster. There was a little bit ice being scrapped off the line by the line guide, but nothing was freezing up, or preventing the jig from free falling.

I also have a few reels set-up with either 10 or 15 lb powerpro with the same leader set-up... If I use them on the ice, it's in the shanty with the heat on.

Rochester news was saying that there is a "strong potential" for lady O to freeze this year. Said the last time was in the 1930's.
