  1. This was a last minuet scheduling. Sorry for such short notice. As with all our meetings, this is open to the public.

Justin Okrepki, justtracytrolling, will be speaking at tonight's 7PM meeting at the Moose Lodge at 5375 West Henrietta Rd. You would be hard pressed to find anyone who is more knowledgeable about Otisco Lake. He practically lives, eats and sleeps on Otisco lake. Justin is arguably the most successful walleye angler on the lake but has also become very knowledgeable in regard to the tiger musky fishing on the lake over the years. If you want to learn how to successfully fish Otisco throughout the year, Justin will point you in the right direction.

We will also be reporting the results of the Saturday's Tiger tournament on Otisco and will be drawing the winner for our Booze Basket Raffle (last chance to buy tickets) and making plans for the upcoming Chautauqua Musky Tournament on Sat. June 27th.

With this year's revised meeting schedule, Tonight will be our last meeting until Mon Sept. 21st.

Good luck to everyone this season. I will be looking forward to your reports on the LOU.

  2. Steve, I went through the samething your going thru with your boat trailer with mine a couple years back.Mine was rusting away from the inside out and kept breaking in different places across the frame.I finally had to find a different used boat trailer for replacement.

My trailer is galvanized so there is no rust. With mine it is just that the spring holders are a weak point plus I think the boat was the max size for the trailer and I added the kicker and 2 more batteries. At one point I had custom springs made that were a little heftier than the original ones. I replaced the spring brackets once many years ago for the same problem. There are two points where they are prone to cracking due to stress. I had these reinforced a couple years ago by a welder. Had to leave boat at jojo's (because the axle was ready to fall out) and he took it to someone. The job he did wasn't what I has in mind and I was expecting them to crack again just where it did.

  3. What about enforcing the regs that are already in place. From what I hear, there are fishermen on Waneta Lake almost every day now fishing for muskies out of season. I have also been told that they target them through the ice there all winter long. I also hear plenty of reports of undersize fish being kept and exceeding creel limit. Or catching a limit, unloading them and going out for more.

  4. It is looking like I will not be able to go due to trailer problems. After replacing the side marker lights. I thought I would jack it up and check the wheel bearings and suspension. I found out that one of the spring brackets is cracked all the way through on the front side just behind where it is attached with the U bolt. So it flops down when I jack it up. I will take it to a welder tomorrow morning to see if he can repair it and if he has the time to do it.

  5. Statewide regulation for min size is 30" but Otisco Lake and Conesus Lake are 36". Problem is with the DEC enforcing the regulations. DEC Officers seem to be unconcerned about enforcing Esox regulations. As far as fishing regulations are concerned, they seem to concentrate their efforts on trout and licenses. At least now that there is no set date to renew licenses, maybe they will spend more effort in enforcing seasons, size and creel limits. Or is this just wishful thinking.

Statewide size limit for purebred muskies is now 40" but I wonder how many will be violating that.

All of us who care just need to do as much as we can to get people to comply and educate them as to the reasons why.

FishermanUpstate, Did you tell the guy with 28 incher that it was under the legal size limit?

  6. Our 2014 Awards Banquet was held on April 18th 2015 at Keenan's Restaurant. Atendance was modest, the food was good and it was an overall good time. The raffle table was very good for the amount of people in attendance. The awards were given based on members entries in the Muskies Inc. Lunge Log.

Dr. Dave Palo was the Men's Division Most Points with 408 total points for 41 fish caught and his largest fish was 49".

Bridgett Palo won the Youth Division Award with 16 points for a 42.25" fish.

Andy Lacko won the Big fish Award with a 55"er he caught on a Bondy Bait  in the St Lawrence River.

I can't figure out how to put pics in post. Can someone tell me how. I reduced them to 800x 600 Extif/JPEG and they pasted ok in the editor but didn't show up when published. Below is the best I can do.

  7. I would somehow want to find a way to make sure it is clean inside and a way to test it for leaks and overall integrity of the tank and entire fuel system. You might have to check and/or replace the fuel lines including vent tubes and fill tube. Also vent tubes should have valves in line to prevent overflow from vent tubes when filling tank.

  8. Yes, if you have a boat, and all the right gear. For casting, you will need a med/heavy to heavy musky baitcaster with 50# braid or better. For trolling you can use a dipsy rod with 50# to 80# test line. You will also need quality leaders, a large rubberized musky net, Long needle-nose pliers, and jaw spreaders. You absolutely must have a quality compound cutter for cutting hooks that may become deeply embedded in the fish or in you. Knipex brand is the best. If you get a different one you will be buying Knipex later anyway. It is important to have these things in order to successfully catch and release muskies unharmed. Read the catch and release topic at the top of this forum.

As far as lures go, there are too many to choose from. Stick to small to medium size (5" to 9") musky lures for those lakes. And Just like making love, how you use it can be more important that what you use.

Be prepared to spend an average of 10 hours per fish caught. It could be less. It could be days.

Reading a lot and talking to or going out with experienced musky anglers will help considerably. Using a guide is another option.

  9. The work they did on my alluninum boat in 1996 through about 1998 was sub par. Kept having to return for leaking rivets. Then I went to Clint Samson at the Watercraft Clinic which is now Samson Marine in Red Creek. He fixed it right. I think he is still around.

I think Great Lakes Boat Repair went through one or two ownership changes since they first worked on my boat.

  10. Is it possible to compete in these tournaments in my kayak alone?

can't come to this one, but thinking in future.

    Blessings,

In general, you need to have a witness and to take a picture of the measurement. The witness can be a contestant in another boat. For the Mark Troy Memorial tourney there will be judge boats and winners are determined by length. It is actually not a chapter tourney. It is run by our President, Jim Reynolds and two other members in memory of a friend who passed away with cancer at a young age. The October 24th tourney at Waneta rules and format will still have to be determined.

  11. I should be able to do it again this year! Steve have we had any other tournaments lined up this season?

Chautauqua on Sat, June 27th and Waneta on Sat, Oct. 24th. And there is also the Mark Troy at Waneta on Sat, Oct. 3rd. We decided not to do a Niagara River tournament because last year we kept having to postpone it due to small craft advisories.
