  1. Justin,

I was thinking that if there a number of loclized walleye clubs throughout the finger lakes, maybe a federation of finger lakes walleye clubs could be set up, with each club having one club representative. It could be similar to the Erie County Federation of Sportsman's Clubs or the Chautauqua County Fedreation of Sportsman's Clubs. Larry is our representative in both of those organizations. I believe there are other counties that have similar groups. These organizations are comprised of a variety of different fishing, hunting, and gun clubs. I'm not sure if there are other types of outdoor sporting clubs involved, such as kayakers. bicicle clubs hiking clubs etc. I believe if a club wants to be a part of it they have to pay anual dues and would then choose a member to be their representative. I am not sure about what they do for funding besides the dues. I'm not sure what would be involved in setting it up. It may also involve applying for non profit status. Larry may know the answers to these questions.

In Erie county, there is also the Erie county Fisheries Advisory Board which I believe advises the county in regard to any fishery related projects funding they are involved in. There may be similar groups or the potential to form similar groups in the various counties in the finger lakes to help to organize funding from the state and other sources for fisheries projects in each respective county.

  2. I am VP of Musly Inc. Chapter 69 in NY. Last month Brad Hammers from region 8 DEC office came to our meeting and gave us a presentation on the angler diary study. We had previously talked to him about it and he decided to start an angle diary study for Waneta lake because we showed an intrest in participating in one to help them gather useful information which will help them to gauge the past and present musky stocking efforts and help them determine future efforts. They have been doing fin clipping for many years and the information we can provide them in the diaries, including size and fin clips, will allow them to detemine how well various year classes are doing in the lake. With the size and knowing which fin is clipped, they can tell the year class of each fish and gauge growth rate etc. They can also use the information to determine angler success in fish per hours of effort. The more anglers they have paticipating, the better and more accurate results they will have. Even if you do not catch any fish, you fill out a page with info on how long you fished and the species you were targeting and that helps them to determine number of angler hours per fish. Also the more years that they have good numbers of angler participation, the better it will help to determine long term trends. So the more anglers particiipating and the longer they participate the more useful the data becomes. The more anglers that participate will help to show the utilization and this information could even be used to show the legislators in Albany the degree of utilization which in turn can mean more funding.

I also signed up for the Conesus Lake diary. I may only fish a few times there this year but I figured it can still be useful information to them.

Here is a phone # Brad Hammers gave us to call if you want to participate in the program. 585-226-5343.

  3. Yes Larry, We do not have a speaker for the meeting. I will be sending out an email, but here is a brief update.

As you said, the presentation of Bob Solley's award. We will have raffle tickets for the booze basket raffle and need some more members to help selling them. I was also thinking we could talk about fishing tattics on various waters for the upcoming season. We could also include pike and tiger fishing for those who are interested in fishing for relatives of muskies.

The State of the Finger Lakes presentation in Lima is unfortunately on the same night as our meeting. I would have liked to attend it.

The board has decided to still have a tournament at Chautauqua lake but it will be a Chapter tournamet run on the same format as the Tiger Tournament under the MI points system. It will be $25 entry, $5 for big fish pool and 50 - 30 - 20 payout for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Start time at 7:AM with registration between 6 and 7:15 AM at the Pendergast launch.

We do have a speaker, Captain John Oravec, scheduled to speak at the June meeting which is June 16th, the Monday before the opener.

  4. I didn't catch any fish but had a good time getting on the water and tageting teeth for the first time this year. The weather was better than I thought it would be and it was good to get together with everyone and meeting many members of this forum and MI Chapter 69 members I haven't met before as well as other participants I have never met.

I want to thank everyone for participating and helping to make it such a good time.

Justin, Thanks for the coffee in the morning. It hit the spot.

Good luck to all of you this season. Hope to see you all on the water.

  5. Justin,

When I click on the link for the DEC report I get a message that says the page doesn't exist. I was interested in what the stats for Tigers were. I was able to find the 2012 report on the website. I wasn't sure if the diary study includes Tiges but I found out fron the 2012 report that it does.

  7. We had a pretty good turnout at tonight's meeting. Brad Hammers put on nice presentation and got about a dozen of us signed up for the Waneta lake diary study.

He also told us that the regulation proposals to raise the size limit for musky on all inland waters to 40 inches and rolling back the opening day for musky to the last Saturday in May are still in the plan. I had not heard anything definitive about these proposals this year and was wondering if they were off the table. If approved, they will go into effect for the 2015 season. This of course does not include Lake Erie, Lake Ontario, Niagara River and St. Lawrence River where the only change proposed is to raise the size limit to 54 inches.

  8. Brad Hammers of DEC Region 8 Will be at our Muskies Inc. Chapter 69 monthly meeting on April 21 to give a presentation on the angler diary study program and to recruit participation in the program. If you fish for musky on Waneta Lake, here is a chance for you to help cotribute to fishery management efforts there. You don't have to be a member to attend. Click here for more details.

  9. Years ago I went to Hay Bay several times for walleye and stayed at the Blakewood Lodge. They had tiny little cabins with bunk beds a sink from the 40s and some of the first refidgerators ever made. The main lodge had a dining room and kitchen and the owner lived on the other side. He was a chef and used to cook some awsome meals. He would do a fish fry one night that was to die for. I asked him how he cooked the fish. He told me the most important thing is to get rid of the skin, the lateral line, all the dark meat under the skin and the silvery membrane lining the internal cavity (that gets rid of all the gamy taste, not to mention much of the toxins). It helps to have a good sharp and flexible filet knife. He dipped it in an egg batter (egg with a little milk) and then in crushed cracker crumbs. He then pan fried it with about 1/2" of oil. No seasoning but I would imagine you could add whatever seasoning you prefer. I crushed up ritz crackers when I did it and it was just as good as his. It is important that the oil be heated up before you add the fish. I used canola oil. I don't know what temp I used but what I did is put a few drops of water in the pan and after it boils out I put the fish in. When the down side is brown I fliped it over and browned the other side. It should only take about two or three minuets on each side. Remove it from the pan and set it on paper towel to soak up the excess oil.
