  1. Anyone ever fish Cranberry Lake up there? My family owns a cabin up there and we always go up in the summer but we usually go up once a winter... I know there are massive pike in the lake I just struggle find them...

I have not, but location for particular times of year is key. Let me know when you plan to head up there next season and I'd be happy to help. Also, yes, there are big pike in there.

  2. We release all of our northerns. Although we did get one this year that didnt make it got wrapped around a stump as normal and by the time we got her off the stump she had injured herself unfortunatly. But, she was 48" and in the upper 20's/low 30's in weight so she is going on my buddies wall

    That's a nice fish!

  3. we lost one a couple years ago on fourth trolling that was well over 4 feet.have caught many over 30,never through the ice though.there are plenty of big lakers in there as well, but they are very hard to catch after spring.

Sure it wasn't a tiger :)? That lake never ceases to amaze me. The lakers can be tough without the right expensive equipment once the water warms up. I usually get into a few good ones through the ice.

  4. Are gaffs legal on the Ice in NY. State? Must be, otherwise I'm sure they wouldn't be in the picture. Nice FISH!!!

If you must know, the only reason it was there was so I could reach down with the handle to get the line out of the groove the friction makes on the underside of the ice. I do not gaff any fish. I do not fish with people who gaff fish.

  5. Thank you very much for all the insight! I just so happen to have a bunch of Red October tubes. They are very versitile. I'm also very familiar with proper releasing techniques and fish handling. Its something I can't stress enough when I bring guys a long on the ice to target big fish. I thank you for bringing it up and making the extra effort to educate!

The boat control will take some getting used to, but as with anything, time will make us all better.

I can't wait to get out there. I hope everyone is very successful this season!

  6. Thank you. I have not fished 7th, nor do I have much knowledge of it. I have seen a couple guys have been fishing 7th a bit this year for the LL salmon, but didn't have much luck. Although, that doesn't mean anything.

  7. A couple local younger guys were really after me this year to get them on some pike. I told them their best chance was the last week of the season. Both of them ended up getting their biggest pike yet, one of which beat his personal best both days. The first day, he caught an 18lber, and the second iced one that went 22.8lbs. The other guys was not so lucky, as we lost one of his that was 40"+ at the hole due to a poor hook set. He still caught a nice 13lber, that was his biggest fish yet. Overall, it was a pretty amazing two days pike fishing.

  8. How many of you guys on the rivers vertical jig for these fish? I've been out trolling on charter trips, but when I watched Jon Bondy's vertical technique, I was very interested in trying that style at my first pure bread. I get bored to easily trolling, although I know how effective it can be covering lots of water. I'm just more interested in experiencing 100% of the fight from start to finish, not just reeling the fish in. I plan on trying my luck a bit up on the St. Lawrence this year, and any help will be greatly appreciated!

  9. Whoa...that thing is a monster. Spent a week there last July and didn't even see a pike. I am not much of an ice fisherman but maybe i should rethink that...

July/ August are probably the worste months to target them. They have a very good way of hiding in the depths. That lake has so much structure, its very hard to even decide on a starting point. Your best bet for open water is the month of May there. I do ok on that lake, but it is very challenging.

Also, couldn't agree more with the C&R. I'd love to see a slot limit to keep those good 34-38" breeders exempt. I know of 12-15 pike over 40" that were kept this winter just on one body of water alone! And it is a relatively small reservoir, which I can't understand how it bounces back producing monsters every year. Its got to catch up eventually, ruining it for the next generations to come. I release every pike I catch. There are better species to eat.

So far I love it. As long as you keep it semi warm, the battery will last. You download an app and can control it from a smart phone. Or manually on the camera. Pic quality is a touch better than the gopro I think.
