  1. Twic card means nothing now. Not needed anymore for 6 pack license. Agree with others about Dennis at Sea Tech.

Are you sure about that. I just finished my course and am going through
the final stages of the application process. I have not seen or found anything that says a TWIC is no longer required. Could you tell me where you got that info. I may ask my school to reimburse me the $125 if it is not needed anymore.

    Matt.

  2. "1:  Chartering is NOT for retirement = you don't charter your income building years to build up a retirement fund      AND     Retirement is for chartering (Think of this on so many levels----tax brackets @ different ages/income brackets ---Paying into social security for 30 years on the books 1st. ---Cash income in life when certain income limits are in play---winters off OR down south working boats in tourist locations  ETC..........."

This is so true.   I work for probably the largest, busiest charter business in Henderson Harbor.  None of the captains in that outfit rely solely on the fishing to pay the bills.  To what extent, I cannot say, but I will say all of the captains I know have other jobs, and fish HARD when the weather permits.  I too had dreams of starting my own business and working this glorious job.  On the water every day, meeting people, doing something I love and making some money at it.  Those things are all still true, but it takes catching lightening in a bottle to put them all together.  One of the first things I realized is that anybody can go out and get their license, buy a boat, put up a sign and call themselves a business.  The tricky part is making it stick and actually being able to sustain that business.  Putting together an experience nice enough to entice people to come back year after year, and to create buzz, is the hard part.  My advice to anyone is twofold, even though I have limited experience:  First, work for someone for a few years to get your feet wet, and see how a fishing business runs.  The devil is in the details in EVERYTHING, I mean EVERYTHING you do to be successful.  Second, if you want to jump in on your own, start out part time.  Use up weekends, vacations etc. from your real job to ease yourself into the grind.  I haven't been in the business long enough to pretend to talk about the state of the lake, so I will leave that part to the many more experienced people on this forum.  Good luck, and I hope anyone starting out does well.  It truly is a great job.

  3. Congrats to your outing guffin, one's better than none!! LOL. Man this has been one hell of a fall season for fishing!! On the other hand around home there wasn't any water in the main lakes we fish for eyes. So this year was a total waste for me. Very disgusted to say the least. With my accident and my surgeries I think I'm going to go on a few eye trips with I think his boat is Sunken Treasures out of Henderson. I feel as if I was out of the link for to long. I have made plans to do this with a few other from this board if nothing else sharpen our pencils, see what happens till then. PAP

I know Gene on Sunken Treasure Charters well. He and Sam are great people, will treat you well and know the walleye game up here inside and out. I know he gets booked up pretty quick, so don't wait if you want a spring trip.

  4. We managed one last trip on Chaumont Bay during the super moon. I played guide for a buddy that is getting into the walleye chasing game. We saw a lot of nice marks, but only had one taker. It was still pretty cool being out on the bay in the middle of the night, and have it be flat calm. post-155053-14795622365034_thumb.jpg

  5. Guffins your pretty much hijacking this thread and should probably start your own. The OPs thread is about his throttle "sticking", not a shifting issue. So the lower shift cable has nothing to do with the operation of the throttle cable.

Sorry for trying to add to the conversation. I think if I were asking a bunch of questions, trying to hijack info from this thread I would see your point. I will back off so as to not hijack this thread. I am not worried about my issues, just trying to add to the conversation.

  6. Years ago, my dad was bow hunting and the hunting was slow. A rabbit came into range and he knows a guy that will take them off his hands. He put an arrow into it, but the ground stopped the arrow from passing through completely. The rabbit took off a ways, but close enough so my dad could hear it squealing. As he's tracking it, he sees a hawk swoop down in the same direction. Sure enough, he hears the wings flap on the ground, and then sees the hawk fly away with the rabbit with the arrow hanging out of it. The arrow has not been recovered. It must've been quite a sight to see that arrow disappear.

  7. Does the motor stall sometimes, if so this is the only cable that has anything to do with the shift interrupter, and if you can afford to have it done I advise you to have it done. I will say that this task is the only thing I couldn't do myself, and the marinia I took it to fought it for 2hrs them selves, of course my modle boat they said is the worse they ever saw, just the way it's routed. Now it's a pleasure to drive!!

It does not stall. Just goes hard into reverse. It is a '97 Proline with the original power and drive. My guess, cables are original too.

  8. Did you have the lower shift cable, from the outdrive to the shift mechanism on the back shift assemble changed? Usually just called the "lower cable". Sorry I didn't see, and all the bellows.

My IO sticks hard going into reverse.  So much so, that I have to change hand positions to get it to go.  In talking to the tech at my marina, he told me it is usually the lower cable that does that.  He also told me that he does those with a boot job on IO's.  To the original poster, I hope your 2 year old cables have not gone bad, but it sounds like it.  In researching them, I also found out it is not worth trying to rehab them.

  9. Not to stray too far off topic, but now that we are talking wintering grounds for walleye, what is everyone's opinion on Chaumont Bay? I keep my boat in Chaumont, and it's still in. I have been doing well out on the deep water shoals, but wondering if the bay will be picking up, or already has, or not at all. What's the opinion?
