  1. Long story short this is my 2nd year trolling for trout and this the second year I brought my fishing boat up to Keuka for our annual week long vacation (this is year 35 spending a week on the lake with my family. ) my old man had a fishing boat in the 90s and we always had good luck trolling for trout Using Bradstreet a On Jenson Moocher flashers on Keuka until the mid 90s when the lake dried up hard and all the bait fish just disappeared.

I stopped up at fishy business on the way and bought some firewood and a watermelon spoon to add to my arsenal and fished 5 days in total from 6am to 8:30am right out on the bluff to the green barn and caught on average 4 fish every trip. my first mate Jeremy joined me on every trip! My speed going south was 2.2 and north was 2.4.

I even took my old man out with me twice during the morning and he brought in some fish.  The good news is there seems to be some life starting to show in old lady Keuka. The bad news is all the fish were tiny and only a few were keepers.  I didn’t keep any btw.

Considering last year I didn’t know what I was doing and didn’t catch anything I feel this was a successful fishing trip!  Here are some pics

  2. Keuka this week has been hitting on frog greens and yellows, also watermelon has been hit. Today however the bite was slow so I swapped out to green and black UV Dots 2 face and things picked up.  Be sure to hit up fishy business to get some good tips!  I have been here on Keuka all week and the bite has been 6am to 8am with a bunch small lakers to show for it.

  3. I have been fishing the finger lakes for over 15 years and typically have really good luck picking up lakers and silvers throughout the season.

Funny thing is i live about 5 min from Lake Ontario and this year we have only had one day where we picked up brownies in the spring using inline planers. Other than that it’s been zilch.

i am obviously doing something wrong.

today we fished 90 and 70 on the riggers with spoons and a few flasher flys out from 100 all the way out to 180 and we boated nothing and only had one release. Folks were doubling up all around us.  We fished about 2.4 mph plus or minus trying to find the bite with no luck..

maybe I got to get my meat game going? Where do you guys buy your meat bait from?

    uhhhg..  what a tough day..

  4. I have struggled with fixed cheaters and tangles for about a year and finally came to a few conclusions.

cheaters suck on main line braided or even low pound test No matter what I did I would get a tangle with free or fixed using almost every method.

heavier pound test on the main line is awesome and paired with action stackers I didn’t get a single tangle and was able to release it quick!

  5. Yeah we started southend  about 1/2 mile north from the drop off on the East Side we trolled lines all the way to Bristol harbor! We found good bait pods in about 150 FOW.

i have noticed the fish don’t start hitting that side until the sun is over the hill.

  6. Launched at 530 got first laker at 630 and it was steady up until 9am and then it shutdown hard!

This is the first trip I was skunked on silvers and my trusty silver bullet JPlug came up empty!

It seems the thermocline is setting up at about 95 feet and we had most out action at 90 on yellow orange spoons with a Mountain Dew paddle flasher.  We had zero hits on the glow green spin doctors and plain silver which usually  is the hot setup at Canandaigua for me!

  7. I am taking my father in-law fishing this weekend to celebrate his retirement and I am trying ti figure out where to go? We did Cayuga last weekend and conditions were tough With the stained water and flees.  I put on 200 feet of 30lb andes mono on all 4 rods in the event we go back.

I have had some luck out of woodville at the Canandaigua south end but I am considering mixing it up and try it the north end since I have never fished there.

    all suggestions appreciated..

  8. Bike,

what size cowbells were you using? I have a couple hammerhead 4/0 and I am wondering if they are to big? I am planning on spending a week at Keuka in August

Fished Keuka today. Got three small Lakers. All on bottom rigger in 120-140.fow. 90’ down w a cowbell in front. They were not interested in either troll pro flasher setup. All in fro t of the bluff. We may be giving up on Seneca for a bit. Good times had. Thanks all

  9. This morning started out On the east side of deans with some unexpected rain and loosing a favorite DW 2 face green / black while fighting a lake trout within 5 min of setting.

We reset with a similar style Green and Yellow DW and got back into the bite!

We caught everything on green colors with yellow accents with spin doctors on the bottom stack for lakers!  I was marking cleaner water south of the Aurora point In 150 to 170 and was able stay away from the crowd picking 2 bows and 2 good size lakers!  We had a bunch of missed releases and lost 2 super close to the boat.

    Pretty steady action all morning!

  10. I will be out of deans first thing Friday Morning and debating jumping across the lake to Aurora or just going north or south out of deans in about 100 / 150 FOW at about 30 / 50 down on the riggers.

a few weeks ago orang/black was a hot color so was purple.  Any updates on the colors this week?  With so little rain the water is probably clear and UV greens might be better?

  11. We left rochester at 430 while it was still raining and it stopped as soon as we got to the south end launch in woodville bout 515.

we struggled for the first few hours with weeds submerged about 30 to 40 foot down.  Also the southend was a total washout and muddy.

once we finally got about a mile north of the launch we had some better luck, water was clear and we had better luck! The wife struggled to get this beautiful bow in the boat took about 15 min!

We are planning on hitting deans Friday morning with my old man!

  12. Launched out of deans cove for the first time and shot across the lake and setup in 200 with the riggers set at 75 for lakers and 50 for the bows.

we found a bait pod at 150 and every time we went past it the poles lit up until about 930 and the bite died hard.

we managed to get 3 in the boat and lost a bunch. 1 on a broken mono leader, 3 jumped off on the rainbow spread at 50 and we got a bunch of releases on 75.

fun day maybe we will be back next Saturday?
