  1. Full disclosure, still near to salmon and trout fishing and need some help. Was out yesterday fishing the trench near Henderson and marked a lot along the bottom. About half appeared as if they were arching up to my bait but I only got one hit. IMG_2615.JPG

Had a few thoughts: (1) they were all lakers and didn’t want the flasher flys (2) speed wasn’t perfect as I don’t have a fish hawk and don’t know the speed at the ball. Boat speed was between 2.2 and 2.8 mph (3) wasn’t fishing long enough.

    Let me know your thoughts.

  2. I was out Monday morning. Temps were definitely weird due to the winds from the week before. Landed to lakers and lost a king on 450 copper, broke the knot at the swivel! Ugh. I didn’t check the trench. Started south of the finger and trolled southerly towards the plant. 44-48 degrees down 110 once we found it in 140-150 fow.

Thanks for the report. How were the waves? Heard it’s been pretty windy this week.

  3. I’ve got a Striker 4 in my kayak. Performance-wise I’m happy with it. It does pick up my hardware under the boat. But I’m using it in shallow lakes, not Ontario or the big Fingers.

Regarding size, the screen is small for all of the data it contains. It won’t have the detail or resolution of a bigger screen because the smaller screen doesn’t have as many pixels available for graphics. It’s fine if you don’t mind getting up close to read it, and aren’t look for precise structure details, but if you want to know what is going on from arms length or greater I would recommend a bigger screen.

Thanks for the review. How deep are you fishing?

  4. Hey guys,

Don’t get out more than 4/5 times a year. Dad and I have an older boat and looking to replace the depth finder. Looks like the Garmin Striker 4 is a great value. Anyone have any experience with it? Does it register your downrigger balls?

    Thanks

  5. Les - thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it. I do have the counters on the mag 10's but they have been giving me some issues (not staying aligned with the gear so they are very inaccurate). I am familiar with the issue of blowback and was looking into a Fish Hawk TD ($149.99) which is much cheaper and would allow me to compare my depth with the one on the Fish Hawk. Little more work and math involved than the x4 but still would would give me a rough idea of the blowback given all the factors you mentioned.

Do you see any issue with spray painted markings on the cable for a more accurate measure of how much cable is in the water?

  6. Hey guys,

Still new to salmon fishing and don’t get out more than a few times a year (looking to get out more). I have older mag10s and am not looking to buy a fish hawk this year. But would really like to be more accurate with my ball depth. Was thinking about spray painting marks every 5 feet on the cable. I would start marks at 50ft and end at 200 ft. I fish out of Henderson and haven’t seen the need for anything over 200ft. I know it sounds like a lot but I’m young and don’t mind the labor/hassle of counting if it will save me some money. Let me know your opinion/suggestions or concerns with my idea.

    Thanks

  7. We use these side riggers when trolling for stripers in the ocean. Just be sure to use the safety rope on them to attach to the rod. They sit in and lock in to your flush mount holders and really aren't that expensive. When done just take them out

These are the wahoo industries ones. Most affordable.

That's perfect, thanks for sharing that with me.
  8. Diver Rod Angle

    Hey guys,

I am a beginning fisherman but have been out a few times. We have a center console with a t-top and rod holders on top. I run two downriggers, one on each corner and was looking to add a diver to the mix but don't have rod holders allowing the rod to sit parallel to the water. Has anyone tried running a diver down the shoot between the two riggers with a vertical rod angle? or have any suggestions?

    Thanks for the advice,

    Dan
