  1. Les,

You are absolutely right!! I saw a response on this page somewhere that they can fit 150yds of 50lb braid behind 300 copper on their 50 Saltists and didn't question it. I just knew the mono backer I have is not enough.

I have a great excel chart that lets me play with reel capacity and line size.

Here is what I found today when I played with the excel chart

Based on the the reel capacity of 30lb mono 350yds thickness of 0.022"

Here is what will fit on the Daiwa Saltist 50s that I have

300' of blood run copper at 0.033" diameter

    35' of 30lb leader at 0.022"

For backing it says I can get 750' of 50lb power pro at 0.014" and the reel will be at 96.6% full

and at 825' of 50 lb power pro it will then be 99.5% full

You also need to account for any mono backer you use to start the wraps on the reel as I don't tape my reels up or tie braid straight to the spool. With that said 700' of braid should fit nicely.

I usually shoot for ~98% full on my reels

That is a lot better, I have found the chart to be very accurate when filling my lead core rods and needing to know backing lengths.

Les thanks for the kick in the pants to do my homework and not just rely on something I saw. People make typos or use lines of different diameters, say feet when they mean yards, or sometimes I just misread things!

I continue to say this is the best site ever where guys are always helping each other.

    Tight lines

  2. I have read the stickies on this subject which are great and many other posts but have a question still.

I bought a few used Daiwa Saltist 50s last year already spooled up with 300 copper and they have mono backing. Had a few fish run taking me farther down the spool then I am comfortable and cranked up the drag to stop them.

I want to change the mono backing out to 50# power pro braid to get about 450’ of backing. My question is when running a mast and large boards like otter etc... what clips should I use to attach to the braid? I have also read guys splice mono between the copper and braid, is this the preferred method for my set up.

I have the large red offshore releases already and used them with no issues on the copper with mono but not sure if the will hold the braid.

  3. I need to replace my Tekota 800 that I use for 400 copper. I had the drag rebuilt by Tuna Tom a few years ago after it never worked right from new and replacing the drags didn't correct the drag problem. I am tired of readjusting the drag constantly as I'm reeling in a fish. I noticed alot of recomendations for the Okuma reel. I'm not going to sell my 800 as I wouldn't wish that piece of junk on anyone else.I saw some used Saltist 50 on this site. Are those big enough?

I have two Saltist 50s set up for 300 coppers and I think that is the limit the reels are awesome but your not gonna get 400 on there with enough backing

  4. I have a lakemaster card (I believe its the Northeast) as I also have ipilot link on my small boat. I use the same helix headunit for ice fishing as well so its currently all setup in my garage and will be easy to check. I've fished Chaumont before and I'm pretty sure that card had maps on it for the bay. I know for sure my card has maps for Ontario though. I will check it out and report back when I get home tonight.

That would be great please let me know. Also if your card is PLUS and version #

    Thanks

  5. Hmmm... I have the LakeMaster PLUS Northeast V2 card that I bought for Oneida. It does not have Lake Ontario or the bays on it as far as I know. It for certain does not have anything near Sodus Bay, as it provides no detail.

I would check again before you shell out $150. Below is the link to the Northeast lake list. And I think it needs to be High Definition to have the contours you need for iPilot Link.

I have purchased 3 Lakemaster Plus cards, and 2 of them were a complete waste of money, Great Lakes and Ontario Canada. The Northeast card for Oneida is awesome. But, with Fishsmart I could have bought just that lake. I know I sound like i'm bi tching, but I spent a lot of money for something that will never come out of my glove-box.

I wonder if the Plus version doesn’t have Lake Ontario but the regular one does?

  6. Guys this is great info, I have had the HB 859 DI unit for 5 years now and it came with the Navioncs card which has worked ok. I just bought a trolling motor with Ipilot link and it requires a Lakemaster card with the Ipilot logo. I plan to use the Link to follow contours both on Ibay and out on Lake O when I fish alone. I did see that the North East card is the one I want for Lake Ontario, but did not see I-bay or Sodus bay on the NE card. Both bays are listed on a different card called Great Lakes. Yankee troller has confirmed that the North East card does in fact have I-bay and Sodus, but Sodus is not as good.

  7. I finally pulled the trigger on an ipilot link unit and its time to replace the Navionics card with a Lakemaster that will work with the ipilot.

I am confused a bit not having used Lakemaster cards and looking listings up on HB site and reading posts here.

It looks like for Lake Ontario I need the Northeast card, but Irondequoit and Sodus bays are listed on a different card.

Can anyone with the Northeast card tell me if Ibay and Sodus are on there? My Navionics card gives me everything but wont work with Ipilot link.

    Thanks

  8. If I had those reels I would prolly do this
    magda 45 - 5 color
    magda 45 - 7 color
    clarion 453 - 10 color
    clarion 453 - 10 color
    Penn 340 - 200 or 250 copper
    diawa saltiest - 300 copper
    diawa saltiest - 300 copper
    Clarion 553 - 400 copper

If you run 30 or 40lb braid on the 300+ copper setups as backing you should be able to fit plenty of backing on those reels.

Thanks for the suggestion that looks like a great spread and would give me a good range and versatility and a good use of the reels capacities.
I really appreciate your help. Being newer to the weighted line thing I just don’t want to do things over and over if guys have go to set ups that I should incorporate into my spread.

  9. I've had good success with the Daiwa Great Lakes Leadcore rods. They come in two sizes (8'6" & 9'). I like the 8'6" rod for my short cores (2-5 colors). 9' rod is great for 10 colors of lead to about 200/300' of copper.

Yankee thanks for the recommendation I may get a pair of the 9’ for my Saltist rods with copper and thanks for the promo code too!!!

I really like these rods, not too wimpy I like the MH in a bit longer rod, nice back bone but still long enough to absorb the head shake on a fierce fight..

    Priced right too..

  11. Well with winter coming up and some time on my hands I am looking to optimize my rod and reel presentation. Already looking at new rods and am now choosing which lengths of LC and Copper to spool up based on the reels I already own. I recently picked up a few that don't have line and I have some already spooled that I wouldn't mind changing to optimize the use of the reels capacity, drag, and retrieval rate.

Here is what I have and if it is spooled up what it is set up with.

1 Okuma Magda Pro DX 45 Line counter with upgraded drag and copper levelwind from convector as a 5 color LC

1 Okuma Magda Pro DX 45 Line counter with upgraded drag and copper levelwind from convector as a 7 color LC

2 Okuma Clarion 453 high speed not spooled

2 Daiwa Saltist 50 high speed spooled up with 300' 45# copper (mono backing, which needs to be changed to braid)

1 Okuma Clarion 553 high speed not spooled

    1 Penn 340 not spooled

I am looking for recommendations, I am thinking of doing the following and not sure if it is the best use of reel and best representation of the "strike zone"

    Both Magda 45's 5 color

    Both Clarion 453's 7 color

Penn 340 200 Copper or 10 color due to the slow retrieve rate

    1st Daiwa 50 Saltist 200 copper

    2nd Daiwa 50 Saltist 250 copper

    Okuma Clarion 553 300 copper

If these were your reels how would you spool them up? I am not sure if it makes sense to have two each 5 color and 7 color rods, or if I would be better served Making the 453's a couple 200 coppers, and the Saltist a couple 250 coppers and the Penn and 553 a couple 300 coppers.

I appreciate your insight and feedback as trolling LC and Copper is something I just added this year.

    Thanks

    Terry

  12. Looking for a little advice as I can't seem to physically put my hands on a rod that I like yet. I fish Lake Ontario and use a single mast with large boards and have no interest in small boards at this time. I know that a lot of the LC rods are built stout to pull the small boards and while using a large board system the rods are not as critical but it is time upgrade as it drives me crazy fishing with all different rods of length and action. I have a bunch of Shimano Triton 200 reels loaded up with 2,3,4 color and a couple Okuma 45 for my 5 & 7. Right now they are on various rods I have collected over 30+ years of fishing and while they work they just aren't ideal. I am looking at the Shimano TDR 86MC2C lead core rods but only online and have not held one. I was wondering if any of you guys with real life experience with this rod can chime in on how you like it. Are these a pool stick and no fun for spring browns? I currently own two 300 copper set ups and use the Okuma Copper/LC rod and love it for that but thinking it would be a bit much for the short core reels. I would be happy to hear other suggestions of rods that have large eyes that LC passes through easily as this is one of the things I am trying to "upgrade" from as well as satisfy my OCD of all things matching.

    Thanks

    Terry

  14. Fisherdaze,

Those 2 reels appear to be Shimano tritons in the 200 series. These are great reals indestructible and all parts are readily available and the reels are still in production. Before the Tekota these were on several charter boats. I have 8 of them with carbon fiber drags set up for short leadcore.  These fetch more money on E-Bay all the time. Someone should buy these up pretty fast.

    Terry

  15. Steeliesteve,

TunaToms reel repair told me the same exact thing they told him, they said they used to offer carbon fiber but they did not think the surface area was sufficient and that they only offer OEM drag washers. I bought enough to rebuild my six reels. I also performed the Penn carbon fiber drag rebuild that I posted a link to and have been happy with the results.

Other options I have researched but do not have experience with are:

Smooth drags sells an Extreme Smoothie for a 50H which from my research is the same drag pack.

I am not affiliated with any of these mfg's in any way.
