  1. I'm new to fixed sliders , will this setup pictured work it's way down to the swivel on the mainline as you fight the fish?  Or does it reach the boat first and you have to unclip the pinned clip to let it down the line?

With a fish the line leaves the clip and the swivel settles on the down spoon that is on the rod. I use an oversized swivel so it actually gets over the spoon. Seems to work ok. With no fish I have to pop the clip and swivel to clear the line. Just need to be careful how fast everything comes up to avoid twists.

  2. Despite the advice here I was compelled to keep my fixed slider rig off a rod and ran the set up pictured with a Spin Doctor up high and a spoon only on my rigger release. Good news is I doubled/maybe tripled my hook rate and had good luck retrieving gear (no tangles). Bad news was no change to my rate of boating fish. Next few trips I think I am going to abandon the Spin Doctor on the fixed slider and go with a spoon on a rod with a modified fixed slider approach to compliment the rod. Secondary fix will be to abandon the Spin Doctor set and run a spoon or fly only program with no rod on the fixed slider. Added insight welcome...IMG_5751.thumb.JPG.50791c4427f5692f0765ffdf7f676619.JPG

  3. On water at 5am and had a flat run to my spot over 175’. Wind was howling from the east by 8am and waves were kicking. Made my way to 150’ at the duck weed chum slick made by the bay. Screen looked great at 50’/50 degrees over 150’. Saw lots of nets being dipped. Released a king in the teens and a skipper. Cheers to the marina staff herding fisherman coming off the water and pleasure boats going on. Lots of patience from everyone! 4. When fishing Lake O out of Braddocks my West to East troll forces me to up my boat speed from 3mph to 4mph to get my lure speed up to 2mph. This forces my program out of my cone and off my Helix screen. Worth a transducer adjustment or do I just roll with it and focus on mark’s and not worry about marking my program?IMG_5431.JPG

  5. Third year using the x4 and all is good except I no longer get a down temperature. There is not much out there re: backyard troubleshooting. Just send it back?? I have played with the gain and zeroed out all other electronics and dropped it in deep and shallow water etc.

  6. Took a buddy out for the shakedown. Launched at 3 and came in at 6. Stayed close to the piers. Water temp was 45 at the mouth. Tried both sides of pier with no luck. Ran 2 inlines, 2 divers and 2 riggers. I haven’t fished for browns since I was a kid, so I have a lot to learn. Hope to get back out soon. Add a few extra turns to your program as the turn can help to dial
    in your speed!

  7. Got out to 175’ at 5 am and set up with a glow set of spoons at 75’. Waves picked up and tossed me around until 8:30 am. Nothing. Joined the crowd in 135’ and fished 50 degrees and the marks at 65’ with some old reliable spoons. Nothing. I’ll be back soon. Maybe switch to my fly and flasher set. I didn’t notice a ton of nets being dipped...

  8. I fish out of Rochester with my 16’ all summer for Kings. A mile out is about 100’ of water. I caught fish around that depth all last summer. You can go deeper just fine as long as the lake is calm. Just watch the forecast and keep an eye on the waves and wind direction and you will be fine.

Me too! 18’ Tracker Targa. I have learned not to motor out if the waves force you to dial back your “get to my spot” speed. Inevitably you get to your spot and realize it is to dicey to manage your gear and if you can’t manage gear sure can’t manage a fish. I do fish solo so that plays into it too.

  9. I just bought a 2013 Tracker Targa... looking to rig it for down rig and overall Great Lake fishing.  I would love to see pics of examples

IMG_0582.JPG Mine is upgraded with a planer mast running into front seat pedestal. Also have a pair of Canon Downriggers. I only run a 10lb ball as aluminum anchor points scare me. Topped off with a Fish Hawk. I typically fish solo so I am a smidge over-rigged. IMG_0581.JPG
