  1. You know what got me thinking about gas mileage. I went up to the lake thru the reservation and stopped and got gas. It was 2.70 / gal. Topped the boat off 53 gal. Real handy to 150.$. Then I bought gas at the gas dock on Saturday afternoon. I think I paid 3.65 $ / gal.
    Wow what a difference.
4 day fishing trip to Ontario cost about 700.00$ total. That doesn’t sound too bad? But when 400.00 is in fuel cost it doesn’t sound as good. Lol [emoji23]
Not the the price of fuel is going to limit my fishing but if I could cut that by 25 to 45 % I’ll have a kicker paid off inside of 2 years.

So does anybody have a 15hp 4 stroke kicker with electric start?
Trim would be nice too. Lol

Thanks everyone for your input I really appreciate it. Made this decision very easy. Thanks.

  2. My boat had a trolling plate on it when I bought it. I didn’t like it so I bought bags. 2 - 28” bags. They work great.
I’m thinking a kicker would surely pay for it self in short order. I’m guessing 3 years.
So what size kicker to push around a 4600 lb. boat 24 feet long??

Ha ha you aint kidding fish nut.  Its been a dream of mine since childhood to buy a big boat rigged for kings that could handle ontario.  And finally at the age of 32 i got it.  Me and the wife had a blast.  Granit she was ready to leave saturday morning after an hour of 4ft waves but after the first hookup she forgot she was seasick and it was on.  And everytime i make the trip up the 3hr ride seems to get shorter and shorter.  Hopeing to get up again in two weeks

We were  up the 13th thru the17th , my wife and I. we had a ball we also live 3-1/2 hrs away from Lake Ontario. and 2-1/2 hrs from Lake Erie. we fish every free weekend we can. We are headed back up the 7th and 8th.

  4. a few years back I made some rod holders out of pvc pipe. it ended up costing me 2 trolling rods and reels. I was convinced a walleye wouldn't break the pvc. I was wrong!!! well it might not have been a walleye but it was something big enough to break my triple tree. I did manage to grab 1 pole before they went to the bottom. (not the one with the fish on it)

just some food for thought. ( you usually get what you pay for ) saved 300.00 on triple trees and lost 400.00 in rod and reels.

  5. Secondary question. Which bag should I pull? Port or starboard?
My prop turns clockwise if your standing behind the boat looking at it.

  6. If you want to lower your fuel consumption, you need to run it near its most economical cruise which will be lower speed. Look online for a review and performance report for your year and model. Look for a review that has a fuel consumption chart. Run the engine at that speed and then adjust your trim and tabs for max speed at that most economical rpm.

Trolling fuel consumption is a much smaller part of the picture and not a lot can be done to improve it, other than maybe 1 bag instead of 2 and adjust rpm accordingly.

Thanks John. I just wanted to be sure I wasn’t way out of whack with my fuel consumption.
    Thank you. [emoji846]

  7. The best economical cruising speed/rpms on most inboard powered engines is 3,000 and you probably will get 1.5 - 1.8 mpg on a boat your size fully equipped with gear and people. Not sure what you have for power or if its a I/O. The I/o will get slightly better MPG because you can adjust your trim for less drag. Trolling will burn around 2 GPH with bags and the rpms that your  running. Your probably getting close to 1 mpg at the rpms you stated your running at to get to the fishing grounds. Based on your and  my numbers you  should be burning about  65 gallons give or take a few depending on conditions and pay load.

Thanks Bob I just wanted to be sure there was nothing wrong with my boat. It sounds like I’m pretty much in line. Thanks. [emoji4]

  8. My boat is a garage queen. She gets to see water 8 times a year for 3 or 4 days each time. 5200 lbs fully loaded.

  9. I have a 2452 bayliner classic hardtop with a 78 gallon gas tank. When I go fishing for a weekend 2-1/2 days I’ll burn a full tank of gas. Is this typical of a boat this size.

Background: I’ll run out about 6 miles troll for 9 or 10 hrs and run back 6 to 8 miles. While running in and out I’m traveling 25 to 30 mph at 4250 to 4500 rpms.

  10. I deal in getting custom made parts all the time. I’m a mechanical engineer. The problem with custom parts is usually not the time it takes to make them. It’s that the machine is making something else and they can’t quit production to make 1 part.

  11. Just forget about what the rigger #'s say go by the probe if your running a hawk that goes by a pressure switch that's pretty much spot on. Do like the above post says Mark 100ft off pull cable to your100' mark, if your 20'off take a paint can mark 20' of cable. Reel in cable in to the painted mark set to 0 and with 20' of cable take that spray paint mark down to the 100' mark see what rigger reads now, keep marking till you read 100 on counter and at 100' mark. As you get closer to reading 100' on cable and counter, you might have to split the difference with the cable to read 100 on rigger. Hope this helps, and you can make sence of my way of thinking. LOL

X2 is use the probe on the one your having trouble with.
If your resetting you zero all the time you have something slipping. I set my zero when I put my riggers on and have never had to touch it.
