  1. center pins are great, I love mine, in fact its about all ill use for steelhead river fishing. but you have to be on top of your game. they don't have a drag and there not idiot proof. I would suggest a really long rod, mine is 11.5 foot. I also use only 8Lb. line and 6 Lb. tippet. you really have to fight the fish well, not a lot of room for error. if the water is stained ill go up to 10 Lb line but usually no larger than that as the fish can see the line. if its super clear ill go to 4 Lb tippet.

  2. There's an app. Called dipsy Troller that I use. You plug in you dipsy size, trolling speed, dipsy setting, line your running it on and it will tell you how much line to let out to reach the depth you want to reach.
I've used it for 2 years and it's really close. If I'm in 100 FOW and I use it to get my dipsy down 100 ft I'll be ticking bottom.

  3. Last of all always double check the direction of the dipsey setting because if set the wrong way you'll have an instant mess[emoji4]

I run 2 different sizes off the same side of the boat. I run a # 3 magnum on a 1.5 setting (its heaver and pulls harder) then I run a #1 with ring on a 3.0 setting off the same side.

I went out late this afternoon in the kayak.  Marked a couple strays off the mountain but many more marks from 100'- 130', most were 80 feet down.  No bait pods until I hit 32' heading back in to my camp and the screen lit up with bait and bigger marks.  2-3' rollers honestly were not bad at all, not even in my 10.5' yak but did not see another boat fishing from 4:30- 8.

You got balls Hornet!! More than most!

  6. You probably just condemned them to a life time of enjoying the outdoors, spending countless thousands on fishing equipment, cabin fever every February and march for the rest of there lives.

The greatest gift a person can give or receive. Way to go.
I'm so glad I was given this gift when I was young. [emoji4][emoji4]

  7. Most are about the same if your spending the same money. In other words, you pretty much get what you pay for. I'm not saying you need to spend the kids collage fund to buy reels, hell most of mine are a mix match I have several different kinds and I find if you take care of your equipment it will last a good while. I do reel maintenance to mine 2X a year during season and again in the off season. Some of my equipment is 20 years old or better. But it works flawlessly or it gets replaced. Most guys I know get there equipment out 3 days before they plan to use it and find all sorts of things wrong with it and blame the manufacture. I suggest a little more preventive maintenance. Goes a long way.

  8. My Dad has been my hero all my life and he is the best fisherman I know. and he has made me a fine fisherman to. when I was growing up we didn't have much, we fished and ate what we caught. we fished for others too we would catch fish for Preston the guy who always fixed the lawn mowers, old lady Johnson enjoyed a couple meals of fish each week all summer long. and several other neighbors.  I guess I started fishing to help feed our family and friends, and I fish now because I couldn't imagine live without fishing. its not just something I enjoy doing its a part of me. I still look forward to fishing with my Dad and I go every chance I get. He's getting up there now at 76 years but we still go fishing together several times a year, most of what we catch gets put back in these days. but its still as exciting as it was 40 years ago when I started fishing with Dad. of course now when we go he gives most of his pointers to his grandchildren.

I am a very blessed man to have a father that loves fishing as much as mine we have spent thousands of countless hours fishing and discussing life.  I was asked one time if I could go back and change something in childhood what would you change? I thought about this for a long time, I would change nothing.
