Selling my 2015 Mercury 15 hp 4-stroke kicker. Has a 20” shaft and electric start. Also has 12 Amp generator to keep batteries charged while trolling. This engine is like  new and runs silent and sips gas. Only reason I’m selling it is to step down to an 8 hp to save transom space and weight. Excellent engine for a kicker or aluminum boat. Asking $2,000, pick up in Ithaca area.

 

 

 

 

I decided to step down from a 15 hp Merc to a new 8 hp Yamaha this year. I have only good things to say about the 15 Merc but I felt like it was overkill for my set up and the Yamaha frees up more transom space and weight. I haven't posted it yet, but ill be selling my 2015 Mercury 15 HP with electric start and 20" shaft for $2,000 this spring if any one is interested, send me a message.

No problem, hope it works out for you. Another suggestion is to install a usb charger hooked up to your battery near the iPad so it doesn't die on you out there. I just use one of these. Generator on the trolling motor keeps everything topped off

With Lowrance products you can use the "Link app" which is free and allows you to screen share to your iPad and you can control the main unit from the iPad which is pretty cool. Allows you to have a second screen without buying another $800 unit. I believe you can only do this with the Ti and HDS units though. I have a Ti and use it all the time. I keep my iPad at the stern sitting on the gunwale shelf of my boat, its not in a waterproof case but it probably should be. They make RAM mounts for tablets that you could install if you want it secured in place. This one is only $30 on amazon. 

Here is a recently published peer-reviewed article in North American Journal of Fisheries Management that supports the idea that pouring soda on a fish's (Pike) gills does NOT do anything to stop bleeding. Better to throw them in the cooler if you experience substantial gill bleeding. Published by scientist at Carlton University in Ottawa. They tried mountain dew, coca cola and carbonated lake water, no report on beer, however.....

Thanks for all the interest but someone picked it up yesterday, good luck to everyone on the ice this year.

Refreshing post because no one picked it up this past spring. Auger is still sitting in my shed and still free to anyone who wants it.

I decided to take yesterday off with the temperature swing and it paid off. Bucks were running everywhere, does were moving, just a really fun hunt. This buck came running to the base of my tree from my grunt call at 1 pm. He ran about 45 yards and piled over and another buck came under my tree again and stuck around for a couple minutes sniffing my buck. The rut is here!

If you decide to go Merc Barrett Marine in Waterloo (between Geneva and Waterloo) are very honest and competent folks and they have on hand most Merc parts etc.Fran and Deb are a couple of the most knowledgeable folks around.

Given your great deal of experience on both the Fingers and Lake O, what would your advice be on down sizing the main engine and going without a kicker? I guess outside of looking for a dealer I’m also looking to see if given the parameters of my boat, it’s a good idea to go this route. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Part of me says ‘if it isn’t broken, dont fix it” as everything runs smooth right now but the other side says get more efficient and new as my main engine is a 1986. I don’t have a desire to go over 35 mph and the boat is only rated to a 140 hp (a 1986 2 stroke weight equivalent not a 2020 heavy 4 stroke) so staying small seems like a good idea to me as long as I can get up and move.

Looking to purchase a brand new 4-stroke outboard for my boat. Considering a Suzuki or Mercury based on my price range. Currently have a 90 hp two stroke Evinrude and a new 15 hp 4-stroke mercury kicker. I would like to save some transom space and weight on the back of the boat and run a single engine for trolling and cruising. Probably looking for a 70-75 hp. The boat is a 19.5' center console aluminum sea nymph that weighs ~1,100 pounds. The 90 hp pushes the boat 40 mph and is plenty so I figure I can go down a bit in size as i only use the boat to fish and don't need to go fast. The new Mercury and Suzuki engines have a trolling feature which allows you to use them like a trolling motor, but yes, I'm sure they don't sip gas like a 15 hp kicker. I usually only fish with 1 or 2 other people as well so total boat weight is relatively light. I fish Ontario mostly, but the Finger Lakes in early spring and winter. I understand and appreciate the safety of having two engines but I'm thinking brand new engines are about as dependable as a new car (or they should be). Just trying to think out loud here to cover the bases. Any recommendations on engine size or if I'm missing something?  Picture of my boat below to give you an idea of what I'm working with. Any recommended dealers in the Rochester to Ithaca area? Price range I might expect?

First ever bear on camera just outside of Ithaca in Trumansburg, NY. Don't see too many bears in the Finger Lakes Region.

I fish both the fingers and Ontario as well and have a 65. I dont think i would have room for a bigger cooler without taking up too much space in the boat but the 65 works great for finger lakes fish and ok for Ontario if you only put 1 or 2 salmon in it. If you have the room for it, i would go bigger.

BW..... you know my kill switch is the dog pulling the cord. Easier than teaching her to get another beer from the fridge! But yes I need to get the MOB+ it’s a drop in the bucket for the loss of the boat or life.

One on each downrigger and a leadcore down the chute. Leadcore sits up on top of my t top so its out of the way when the downriggers go off. It was a bit of a rodeo moving rods around and trying to pull up the down riggers while driving and keeping the line tight, once it gets to the back of the boat and the net comes out all hell brakes loose..... but having a center console makes it easier to manage

hahaha its funny i use to be the guy that sat at Taughannock checking boats when i was a undergrad in 2013. I guess i taught her well

Quick solo outing with my pup from 6:00-7:30 to beat the rain. 2 for 2 on kings in 105 FOW down 80' with a salmon candy Warrior spoon off the downriggers. Temp was 52 down 80 feet and no current going with the waves or against. Reeling one of the kings while driving into the waves was a challenge, maybe time to justify autopilot..... Missed all the rain and when i came in was the only truck in the lot, weird to see Sandy empty.

Headed out at 5:30 pm fished till dark. Went from 80-170 FOW and the best screen was in close 80-85'. Didn't move a rod until 8 PM picked up a big female and then another skipper as soon as the rod hit the water again 60' down over 85 with a green dolphin spoon trolling 2.6 mph. Temp break was at 65' and all bait and marks seemed to be in close, 47 degree water down 70 feet.
