  1. I agree with fishnut to an extent. Yes, mouth calls are one off and unique for sure. They can be a pain to blow on for 45 min though ( typical coyote stand time for me ).

The FoxPro has prob 40-50ish sounds I typically use and some situations call for it like the educated dogs scenarios. I also use "fox pitch" ALOT. This changes the tone of any call, a feature I doubt alot of guys use. Plus, your getting fox calls, yote calls and crow calls all in one push of a button and you don't feel winded after a long stand. Just my .02

  2. Pap. I have the shockwave. Went through a bunch of calls prior, all FoxPro up the line. Hands down the shockwave is where it's at. The main seller is the remote. The tx1000 is only available on the fusion or the shockwave. Always a big arguement with guys on which unit is better though. Fusion is Def loud with less bulk but has a speaker facing each direction. Shockwave has the movable speakers which I change up for each stand. I also do crows, and the shockwave Def screams em in. No prob getting loud ! If you got the fusion you may have some minor regrets but if you can get over the bulk of the shockwave it's the way to go. As far as the alpha dog, my friend has one. I had him show me some common calls, yote vocals, pup distress, rabbit etc. I was not impressed at the sound quality as far as realism is concerned. I'm sure the primos will call in some fur, and some crows but I think FoxPro has the E-caller market cornered. You may save some money but you won't get anywhere near the unit compared to the FoxPro. I recommend you find somebody close to you with the unit your looking to buy and give it a test drive first. Just don't do what I did.... Had a spit fire, then went a step up, then another, then finally man'd up and got the shockwave.... Wallet was flat but I was finally satisfied with my caller.

  3. Did you make the check in? I did not, had some unexpected guests stop over to take in the game. How many teams checked in? I see the winner had a ton of greys and some reds and a yote.

I did. Winner had a giant pile. I believe it was 13 fox and a yote. Other than that it was a light take. Those guys were from Broome county. They had a dusting of snow and was alot closer to zero. Made me jealous. Waist deep drifts and -20 for me. Show was good though. Plenty of crap given away.

  4. At least you got out. I missed 4 days work this week with the flu....my contest time was on the couch....too old to tempt a relapse. Maybe make up for it in the Foxpro (bark at the moon) event end of the month. See ya tomorrow.

  5. A red came in last night.  I convinced it to stay.

I am going to ask a dumb question.  What can I use for a round 30-06 that doesn’t destroy the hide of those thinner skin animals.  Frangible, full metal jacket?  Right now I am using 150g core lok.  It is my favorite for deer season .

I will start looking for a designated varmint rifle next year.

    thanks,

Big calibers = big mess. But, bang flop !
  6. Doing the slam this weekend but had the flu all week so not looking good right now for much hunting in this cold. But I'll show Sunday at check in and hope for door prizes. Cheap beer and a couple tv's in the bar to watch the game.

Ditto. Finally starting to feel better and now gonna head out in this crap. Good luck and I'll see you Sunday !

Pap, I would definitely hold off on the weather but the slam only goes tonight-sun. Trust me, not looking forward to slow action cold hunts !!
  7. Took my cousin out tonight so he could shoot something with his new "predator rifle" He built a .204 ar15 with a 26" heavy barrel, I bet the thing weighed 15+ pounds with all the dumb lights and bipods and **** he had on it. 1st set we had a yote sit down on the woodline about 400 out and stare toward the caller for 15 minutes. Eventually he walked off somewhere. He didn't seem to want to come play in the deep snow. Next set didn't take long. 2 minutes in i have action to my right and I let him know he has a fox coming in hot and light it up whenever he's ready. You could see it fine once it got within range as it was blasting trough the snow throwing a wake like a jet ski. He hesitated, I barked it to stop, then I heard frustration and a safety click off as the fox ran up and bit the caller and took off. That was my signal to step in so I took a couple shots and dropped it on the run. Doesn't this kid put a round into it as it lifts it's head up while laying in the snow a second later. Better late than never I guess. Lol. He also learned to skin a gut shot fox tonight since that was his mess. Video below.

Sweet video and nice shootin !!

Pap, I don't believe that's snow flying....lol. I think it was that was some fox "parts" flying.
  8. Let's keep this thread off Andy and the state regs.... I'm sorry for bringing it up, thread is cool let's not ruin it !

Our ar's have the mag pinned, let me tell you how fun it is to open it up and top load, then to unload u have to cycle em out through. Stupid.

  9. To add to the halo, the advice I was given a long time ago was the bottom is the most important part to keep the eyes in till you switch to kill light because the critters can't see you but they can pick up shadows from your light moving, keeping it above them limits the shadows that will be in front of them (the way they are looking).

  10. Its true that most people don't need it because they only do this a couple or few times per year. Thats a hefty price for the occasional user. For the avid night time predator hunter NV can be advantageous. However, it doesn't take the place of having populations and using proper set-ups. In other words it won't make you a better hunter or allow you to see coyote that aren't there to begin with.
That being said I still use lights as I haven't been able to justify the cost yet. You need to buy the best available, the gen 1 or 2's just won't give you the clarity to make positive ID's of your target. Someday I'll spring for one.

Completely agree. I actually hunt a bunch through the season but can't justify the cost of NV or thermal. Between the gun, calls, lights etc, deer hunting gear, guns bows etc, and now fishing, boat, poles etc.... I can't keep up ! If I hit it big, I'll do thermal but for now I'm ok with lights
  11. Todd - thanks for the info. Do you think chips are far superior, or a worthwhile investment over factory maps? I know there is a feature that I can plot and save my own readings but as a rookie I'd rather spend my time learning my gear and getting on fish than monkeying with the chart. I think if I sit there and poke around I'll be like the people you see out to eat at a restaurant jamming on their phones all night or the folks that text and walking into walls.
