  1. Fished evening of 23, 24 and 25th. Had friends fishing from 65 to 130 fow and they did well. Seemed like most of the boats were working inside. We worked that water a little with no success so headed offshore. Got into them from 275 to 350 fow. With best water around 330. Steelhead and kings. All sizes from not much bigger than a mag spoon to our best king that was over 20 lbs. Mostly teenage kings in the 8 to 12 lb range but several high teens, with some nice steelhead.

Biggest fish came on 300 copper and 10 color core with a 3 oz snap weight. Both with meat rigs and uv paddles. Wire diver parked at 175 with meat did well. Riggers at 60 and 80 with free sliders took fish. Ran some mag spoons but no takers. Best regular size spoons were uv 2 face, uv green dot, uv beef eater, rod father, and 3 days at sea. Flasher/flies were not very productive taking only 2 steelhead.

  2. While experience will teach you to read your downspeed by the cable angle of your rigger, you can shorten the learning curve with a speed/temp system such as a Fish Hawk or Moor Subtroll. While a Fishhawk is expensive, used Moors come up for sale on this site on occasion. The down speed at the weight can greatly differ from surface speed. Also a drift sock (relatively cheap) can slow your speed down.

  3. Are your rigger booms rated for 12 lbs. The bouncing could be from the booms bouncing. Shorter booms could help with this. Are you using rubber bands on your releases? Are you loading the rods? Really crank a deep arch into them. Also while its good to run the weights above your marks, stagger your depths unless you are seeing a pattern at a certain depth. You will find that a lot of fish you catch wont show on your sonar, especially with longer leads on your riggers.

  4. I run 30 lb power pro and 7 strand wire with the deeper divers. They are close to the charts with the wire running only slightly deeper. On any given day depths may vary with current and speed. F/F will run different than spoons as well. I usually run a 124 mm on 1 setting inside rods and a slide diver or 107mm on a 3 on outside rods. Starboard I usually run deeper than port side and keep adjusting till I find a depth thats working. When u find a depth thats consistently working then you can adjust the other rods Good luck!

  5. Hi guys ,
I love this site 25 yes ago I fished the spring derby out of Olcott at Hedleys place for about 7 yrs. I live 8 hrs from there but loved the fishing the chance of landing a derby winner , prizes were fantastic -19’ grady plus F150 salmon division Brown trout was Aluminum boat all set up.Met people from all over and had some awesome days on the lake and some very late nights at local watering holes never won but had a blast trying .Sorry about length of post bottom line is there any reasonable places to stay in wilson for spring derby that isn’t booked a year in advance ?
Always stayed at small room with boat in walking distance it was sweet.Putting together used boat purchased last fall hoping to get back into Ontario fishing .Thank you in advance .
Lake View motel is just west of Wilson. Rooms, cottages, cabins, very nice. Good people.

  6. Certainly was a grind. Fished between Wilson and Olcott. Roasted Friday for 10 hrs. with 12 bites. Boated 5 coho, 2 kings, and lost two kings at back of the boat. Mostly spoon bite, from 30 ft to 85 ft down over 170 to 220 fow but biggest ho (about 9 lbs.) came on a two face spinny with green fly on a 300 copper. Absolutely no pattern at all. fish were scattered. No marks. Fish had almost empty stomachs.

Saturday. Being cloudy, would have thought it would pick up. 4 bites from 6 am till 2 pm when it got a little rough. 3 hos and 1 king on a carbon 14, which we we broke off in a rigger cable. Spoons, with one on a pink maglip on a 3 color core. We tried to cover all water columns. Ran meat 80 to 110 down and it never took a shot. Very few marks, decent bait balls 70 to 90 fow.62204.jpeg
