Welcome aboard. I'm a retired Broker/Owner of 30+ years. Have two boats set up for fishing: 16 ft. AlumaCraft and 19 ft Sea Nymph with soft cabin, fully loaded. I'd like to drop you a line someday. My direct email address is: [email protected] Bob Nevins "Speedy"

Looking for some information as to what is the smallest size Stainless Steel Ball Bearing swivel with snap lock? I have one left and no package. What make and from where (warehouse or on-line). What goes thru your top guide? I have a few Duo Snaps, but I'm getting a lot of line twist with Floro, so maybe a good quality S.S ball bearing snap swivel might help. Thanks, Speedy

Hello fellow AlumaCraft owner. I slowly upgraded my old AlumaCraft with a new V Bow mount and also replaced the winch. Didn't cost much and the combo worked fine. Suggest maybe while its still in your garage or driveway, wire-brush and Rustoleum paint the trailer, run new Marine grade wires and LEDs. I also replaced the old wheels and tires and bearings, and hold down straps. I didn't want to worry about braking anything at the ramp or towing. just wanted to go fishing. LOL Good luck. AlumaCraft a good strong boat for the price. Speedy in Vermont

Stripped all the old automotive wiring out and replaced with 12 gauge marine wire and connectors, new switch panel and dash, master battery disconnect +. All works well . BUT...when I checked out my transducer I discovered it had been repaired/epoxied. Question is might it be ok to after cleaning it, apply a thin coat of Marine sealant. OR...Throw it overboard. It works, but. Any suggestions? Thanks, Speedy

I agree 100%. I'm a old "race car" guy and like everything clean, neat and easy to work on. This boat is my second (used 16ft. AlumaCraft with gas Merc stern outboard). Starting with a new 12 Marine (single battery) I plan on installing Master Disconnect switch. From there I am thinking about either a 8 gang Rocker Switch Panel with resettable circuit breakers OR a 6 gang waterproof switch panel with one 15A inline fuse. Keeping it simple (no music, radios, inside lights). Just Humminbird fish finder, small bilge pimp (not automatic), running lights required, live-well pump, and first the Merc outboard electric start with trim. Do you think a 12 terminal Block Buss Bar is needed in line before the rocker switch panel? Or does that switch panel act a buss bar itself? Using only marine tinned wire and connectors, and labels on the switches and wires going to each. This is all new to me, so I appreciate any advice. Any idea on what gauge wire? Short runs of 5ft. to switch panel, so 5 ft x 2 =10 + each. 12 gauge sound ok? Thanks, Speedy

I think I discovered a possible reason my fish finder was sometimes shutting off and on. Old wiring. What I found in the box was automotive type wire, probably wrong gauge, crimped and covered with electrical tape, no shrink wrap. Drawing plans on paper first. Starting from the 12 volt marine battery, install a Master Shut off, then a 12 terminal Block Bus Bar (6 red/6 black), then a new dash board panel using Bass Pro Shops illuminated rocker switch panel with breakers (not fuses) SKU# 3097079. This panel uses three 5 amp breakers, two 10 amp breakers and one 15 amp breaker. This is for my smaller boat, 16ft. AlumaCraft, with 45hp. Merc ,electric start and trim using one 12 volt marine battery, and a 85 lb. thrust 24 volt Minnkota (two batteries) , (both stern mounted). Fish finder, bilge pump, live-well pump, required running lights, horn all on the one 12 volt. Questions: 1: What gauge wire is best for the fish-finder? I plan on using only marine grade tinned wire and marine connectors. 2: Install a second battery shut off for the two in series? 3. Any idea as to what the amp draw would be for each equipment? Any suggestions is welcome. I'm trying to keep it simple and clean. No radios, music, fancy lights...just the basic stuff. All the wiring was installed in a wooden compartment with carpet screwed down on top. Nothing was visible. Now I would like to see an have easy assess. Thanks. Speedy

As fisherman you know how it is when you start to bite that sandwich and both lines snap tight, side-tracked, but still thankful you had activity. Well a few weeks ago I received a phone call telling me about two families that were in need of help; (I am a retired Catholic Deacon). One family, with two children, just suffered a house fire in Barton, (near Crystal Lake). Kids were in school and the wife was with her husband at the dentist office several miles away. Story goes…his cell phone rang while he was in the chair, caller, screaming “There is smoke pouring out of your house.” He said “I’m on my way…and did you call the fire department?” “Oh?? I’ll call them now.!” Seems they had 7 dogs, guessing one of them reached up on the gas stove and hit the knob, self-ignition type, lit high, pot holder/towel then up the wall and into the ceiling. Fire department came ASAP and did their work. Chopped several holes in the roof, knocked out the windows and flooded every room and everything in it. 100% of clothes was either burnt or smoke/water damaged. He is a handyman by trade, and his equipped storage tool shed was destroyed. No one was hurt but they lost all 7 dogs. I am the Chaplain for the Knights of Columbus and requested/granted a $500. Gift Card from Wal-Mart, so they could go and replace some of their clothes. Another special program, “Coats for Kids”, gave the new winter coats. Power company disconnected the electricity and wouldn’t even provide a contractor’s service pole/meter to allow him to start rebuilding. Insurance company was quick to reject his claim as “Negligence”; requiring him to hire a Lawyer and start the long process. I went thru my spare tools and filled a few boxes with power saws, drills, levels, boxes of sheet-rock screw/mud and paper tape, few gallons of white paint, and my gas generator from my old race car trailer with several extension cords and misc. stuff. My wife makes quilts and pulled several new and filled boxes with kitchen cookware, silverware, glasses, etc. We met them and loaded their SUV and pickup, they were extremely Thankful. Last was a complete Turkey dinner Plus, plus back-up. They are now staying with friends. Second family of 6 was in North Troy. Husband is permanently disabled from working in VT Corrections Dept. , Food Stamps ran out due to government shut-down. They were forced to find new housing due to previous landlord selling the house from under them. Not much for rentals, so they were forced to rent two apartments, next to each other but not connected; Thus double rent, and utilities. Seems North Troy and several locations have an “Occupancy Restriction limits”, ending with one parent and two kids in each. As a retired Real Estate Broker, this makes me nuts; but can’t fight City Hall over night. So again I obtained a Gift Certificate from Wal-Mart, to re-stock their food supply. My wife and I went thru all our “Little Girl Stuff” that we had stored, from our 3 girls; so nice dolls and games and again new quilts and coats, and full Thanksgiving dinner. Again Thankful! Lesson learned…Thanksgiving is more than Turkey. “Tight Lines” Speedy Bob and wife Lynne

Thanks...I just bought some. Going in both tanks this weekend, Speedy

Thanks Guys. I'm a little "Gun-Shy" about the fuel whereas when I bought the boat, 2 years ago, it had been stored outside in the snow. Brought it to the Marina in Spring for a full tune-up. They found water in the fuel, old tank needed replacing. Had a new custom tank built and sending unit/gauge installed, and water separator filter. Got charged $2,50 a gallon to remove old fuel (30 gallons). Cost thousands for that repair job. Got the lecture about using only high-test gasoline (Ethanol/Alcohol Free) fuel. BUT to add gasoline anti-freeze (again alcohol based) for the winter storage. Oxymoron ? I used to drag race using methanol only; ran cool and made more power than gasoline. Kind of "Damed if you do and Damed if you don't. LOL

Thanks...All the batteries are new this season Marine batteries. Speedy

Winter gives me gas. I need some “Winter Advice”. I built two weather-tight, non-heated boat sheds for my pair. 1. Should I fill the tanks full (very little air space for moisture)? OR ? ... both tanks are almost full today. 2. If I top them off to 100% full, should I add a fuel additive to the gas ( I only use High-Test alcohol free gas) but most additives are alcohol based ??? 3. I have good marine battery charger systems to maintain 3 batteries each. Leave them on (good house power service connected) or pull the batteries out? 4. How many days until Spring I appreciate your suggestions. Thanks “Speedy”

It’s that time of the year and all the cute little critters start looking for a warm place to hide. Then they chew on wiring harness, hoses, upholstery, etc. My house and garage are sealed tight, and no foods are left out, but my new boat shelter is now a target. New population of squirrels and a few skunks are looking it over. Have any of you guys ever tried using smelly petroleum products like Mineral Spirits or Turpentine on rags to deter the little rodents? Moth balls melt away,Pepper and Mint oils also fade quickly. Any ideas? Thanks, Speedy

Hey guys. If you would please lay out for me by the numbers, what order items should be attached to down riggers. I have four and a little shy on taking a chance of loosing everything first shot. I fish alone so steering, speed, and setting lines and down riggers can cause a little stress especially in the wind etc. I am not in deep water over 100feet. My VT. lakes are are less than that with fish finders showing fish at 25 to 35 ft depth. So please by the numbers....Starting with the Cannon down rigger cable factory end/clip as #1. what order is best using...Lead ball...Snubber...Fish Hawk X4...Flasher/attractor...Leader....Lure. S.S. Snap swivels on everything both ends? Once I get it set up and practice then I'll copy it on the other three down riggers. This is all new to me, so thanks in advance. Speedy

Thanks LongLine, I used to own/started Stowe Mountain Sports in Stowe, VT 30 years ago, sold a lot of fishing equipment; before new design braid, Flouorcarbon and Windows 10, was invented. LOL. Never too old to learn. BUT when I look at the many videos on YouTube 100% of the fishermen swear by the braid and flouro combo as the greatest invention since sliced bread. I understand the stated advantages of the braid, but there is also negative ones too, including costs and sea fleas sticking to it. Also the problem of attaching the braided line to a much thinner leader with a special knot (several types) that may get stuck in the top eyelet of the rod, or connection- break or just a pain. How bad is just using a good quality mono and tie on the lure? I have made a collection of many lures, spoons, etc and try to match the hatch with color, size, profile, etc. BUT. Oct 31 was our last day for trout and salmon in VT (except Champlain). Some guy was just leaving a spot on the Clyde River, noted for salmon and handed me his bait. Night crawlers. I smiled and tied on a simple bait-holder hook, size 8. I caught 2 salmon in 5 minutes using a half of a worm. They are just fish, and all fish eat worms. Are we "Over-thinking" all this special tackle, lines, leaders, etc. I have 15 nice lake here in the North-East Kingdom area of Vermont, some are over 300 ft. deep and ice cold. Lake Champlain has the most Salmon and Lakers but is a 2 1/2 hour tow for me one way. That's 5 hours of daylight not fishing, so I am trying to Fish Smarter. LOL Thank you and all the guys for the advice. "Ya Got to Hook em to Cook em". Speedy (78 years old and still having fun)

Thanks for the tips on Fluorcarbon. Might have been new/OLD stock via internet warehouses. Also I did notice that the line felt a little lumpy/slight different feel in smoothness when drawn between my fingers. I pulled off at least 10 yards to test and all the same. Figured that was just the way this new stuff should feel. Cut off that first couple yards and went on to spool the line on my spinning reels thru damp cloth and measured off and attached several leaders for my down-rigger /braided lines. Not casting with the braid, only on my bait-caster/line metered reels. I used several yards of Backing, then the Braid, then the fluro Leader. Manufacture's ads claim braid is stronger and thinner and doesn't stretch. 20 lb test is 20 lbs test, and isn't a little stretch Ok...to reduce the shock of a hard hit? When the rod is sitting in the down-rigger and gets a release there is always a few seconds before you can grab that rod and crank right? Rookie here so please explain. I have a 19 ft Sea Nymph set up with four down-riggers (two electric two manual), two Lowrance units (7 & 5) and a Fish Hawk, and no first mate, just my wife. So we are learning. Don't want to end up like a circus and kill the fun out of fishing for her, while spending too much time re-trying several lines all day. Started with just the two electric but added sliders (so 4 lines). I might try an experiment by removing the braid off two reels and spooling one with 100% Fluorcarbon and the other with 100% mono and test the results. Don't know if I don't ask. Thanks Speedy

Thanks for the reply. I forgot to mention that my spinning reel was filled with 100% Fluor. on a 8ft. graphite Salmon rod I use for steel head fishing. The breaks were either inches above the split shot or down above the hook. My gut feeling is the temperature. Mono is more flexible and has more stretch than the Fluor. I'll bet it got stiff in lower temps. Air and water were in the 30s. Didn't stretch but snapped. Still thinking I might be safer to strip off all the braid with Fluro. leaders off my boats bait casters and refill with just good mono and not worry about loosing dozens of lures. Jury still out. Speedy

Thanks guys, but that really doesn't answer my basic question. Is the NEW Fluorcarbon really that much better than mono or is it a lot of advertising hype. Sorry to say it wasn't fish breaking my line, but little split shot snags. Got down to using zero weights, just the salmon eggs on a S.S hook and still snapped off when bouncing on the bottom. Again the comparative cost of the braid plus 100% Fluorcarbon compared to a good brand mono and the performance of the combo is questioned. Hate to loose several new lures with several lines out of the boat, plus the special care of using special knots to connect the two. I don't have any real experience to lean on, so I respect you Captains who have done this for many years advise. I have all my 8 bait casters all spooled up with braid and Flor. leaders but now a little Gun Shy. Thanks, Tight Lines Speedy

Today was opening day here in Vermont for Trout and Salmon (other than Champlain). Understanding this time of year the run-off can be extra strong. I have had success fishing the Salmon River/Pulaski,NY using good brand mono filament, catching steel heads, in really fast water. Someone please explain the real "Why" use braid, (not because it is a personal favorite) but some facts. I understand using a leader to make the presentation less visible. I'm told that the new 100% Fluorcarbon line is thinner and stronger than thicker test versions of mono. If it is that much better than why not just use 100% Fluorcarbon. Or 100% good brand mono. Today I snapped off at least 10 rigs, for the first time using 10lb Seaguar 100% Fluorcarbon. Cold fingers in the 34 degree rain, tying on new rigs made me think of better days. LOL This was on spinning outfits, but I have braid/fluor on my trolling bait casting reels and wonder why? Thanks for your advice. Speedy

Suffering from a little Cabin fever and looking forward to opening of Trout season here in Vermont, April 15th. Anyway looking for a few tips on that first day in the boat when most of the ice has melted away from the shore line. Salmon, Rainbows and Lakers are the targets. Do the larger fish come in towards the shallows for first Spring feeding? Troll along the edges or anchor near area and jig. I'm in smaller Vermont in-land lakes like Willoughby, Memphremagog and Crystal to start. Suggest any special Spring lures, baits, techniques? Use the down-riggers or something smaller like a 3 way swivel with weight down and lure/bait out straight. Thanks. Nothing like Arizona, so time for this old dog to learn a few new tricks. LOL Speedy
