  1. Thanks for the tips. All I ever knew was gut, then and clean them ASAP and get them on ice. Now I can relate...When I was a volunteer Deputy Game Warden in New Jersey, I would get the nasty calls to pick up a hit deer or two in highway crashes. Some times they were not yet dead and pumped adrenaline in their system and the meat would taste like skunk road -kill. LOL So..do you guys filet the fish on board and just bring home the fillets? Thanks 'Speedy"
  2. Thanks for the tip.. I was told soak them in Jack Daniels, next day throw away the fish and drink the marinade. LOL I'm a little afraid to keep any Lake Trout. Ever try any?
  3. I'm getting ready to make my move back East to Vermont early May. I have a dozen or more nice Rainbow trout in my freezer. All 18" -21", cleaned scaled and frozen same day caught. I have tried the maple syrup version and the breaded with corn flakes style also. Looks good but still has the dominant FISHY taste. Can't leave them for months in the freezer. I can thaw them and flay them anytime. Any ideas on cooking other than extreme hot sauce. LOL Thanks "Speedy"
  4. I'm getting my tackle together for my first season trolling for Salmon and Lake Trout. This first season I will be fishing the 15 deep water lakes in Vermont (i.e. Lake Memphremagog, Lake Willoughy,Crystal,Semour and a dozen others..all up to 375 ft deep and cold water). Land-Locked Salmon not Kings. So what would you suggest for trolling flies behind a Flasher/Dodger? Size, colors, tandem hooks or single and where to buy them? Thanks in advance. "Speedy"
  5. Thanks for thinking of me. I now have 3 brand new reels and 7 good/used loaded with 10 color with backing. As far as rods goes...I will need a few but concerned on how the will ship from a non-manufacturer. Maybe just wait until Spring and pick up some at local shops in Vermont. Thanks, Speedy
  6. Well...I couldn't wait any longer so I dusted off my AZ 16' AlumaCraft AZ boat, Humming Bird, and 24 volt Minnkota and my wife Lynne came with me to tell me what I was doing wrong. LOL Went to AZ Parker Canyon Lake (over one mile high in elevation). Sorry to report that the temp was 58 degrees and warming, clear sky and no wind. I was the only boat there. Lake was like glass, and over 100% full, perfect! I wanted to try out some of Crazy Ivan's lures (thanks Todd). They work on AZ Rainbows also. Put out Lynne's straight line with a "Silver Sapphire" and a couple large split shot 24" back. Bottom was 36' and fish on screen at 26'-30'. I put out mine with a "Phantom" med. weight spoon and added a 3rd shot out 50+ ft. Lynne got a hit and set the hook and it came out like a Nike missile. Good to hear my wife get excited. While helping her with the net, my line hit. Doubles. This was looking to be a great winter day. Then my cell phone rang, with a 911 call from one of my adult daughters. Some guy ran a Stop sign and hit her on her electric bike on her way to work. Bike is totaled, she is ok now out of the hospital. Turned the boat around and did a super fast load and 1 1/2 hr. trip back. All OK now. Looking forward to May to launch my Sea Nymph in Memphremagog and go for Salmon and Lakers. Then over West to NY. Speedy
  7. Thanks Guys. Just bought the house and the Sea Nymph in Newport,Vermont in November. Boat fits in the garage perfect. I'm "Snow-Birding" between Vermont/NY and Tucson,Arizona. Sending AZ "Cold" winter days (50-60 degrees) reading up on Owner's Manuals and selecting and buying my gear for Spring. I'll ship my goodies to myself just before I return. Thanks for all your advice. Wishing all you a Happy and Healthy Christmas...and Tight Lines. "Speedy"
  8. Thank you for your advice. Making a list of all the suggestions. Christmas gifts. LOL Tight Lines. "Speedy"
  9. Just joined the group. Picked up a nice 19 ft Sea Nymph set up with 4 down riggers (2 manual 2 electric), 7 " and 5 " Lowrance Hook, Fish Hawk X4, I Pilot. So I think my boat is equipped ok to start but have have zero gear. I was a stream fisherman all my life, so light weight spinning gear only. May I ask some of you for your expert advise as what to start with. What rods/reels/line,releases, etc. would you buy if you were just starting out trolling for salmon the first time? I appreciate your advice. I don't want to waste time/seasons and money. Thanks, Speedy
