cleaning and bottom painting my aluminum Starcraft Islander
Slimer replied to rolmops's topic in Open Lake Discussion
I keep a 19ft aluminum polarkraft in a slip from end of April to middle of October. The first year was a disaster. I let the buildup dry when I pulled the boat out and cleaned it a few weeks later. Since then, I pull it out once in the middle of the summer for mid year oil change and give it a scrape while it’s wet. At the end of the slip season I use this star brite hull cleaner https://a.co/d/3LwgpsN. My boat is unpainted below the waterline. I dilute it, spray it on, and let it sit for a couple of minutes. When it’s done foaming I take my push broom and scrape. For tougher spots I use a painters multi tool. -
Maybe I just want to ****, but the fact that I can’t fish this with just my boys (under 10) has killed my interest.

After spending most of July fishing smaller local lakes, and Lake Michigan with the boys it was finally to shake the rust off with Lake Ontario. We left the dock around 915, and with river surface temps in the upper 60s we decided to stay close to shore. Running a three rod spread, we setup in 45 fow. Chinook diver, and two downriggers, all running shiny spoons. By the time I had the third rod set we had a fish on the chinook diver. Netted the fish and the downrigger fired. Unfortunately that one got off pretty quick. Left shortly after the excitement and back at the dock around 1030. Toddler boys got what they came for and were ready for lunch.

With the lake finally flat, I took my family out for a quick trip ~5pm. Lots of chocolate river milk. Once we found the green water in 60+ feet, we put the rods down. Immediate fish on Green Alewife 25 feet down. Unfortunately it got off when I was handing the rod to my wife. Fast forward 30 minutes we found another good patch of water and my wife had one on. While she was fighting it, something hit the stacker and screamed out line and then the other downrigger fired. We ended up doubling up on the downrigger rods, 25 feet down and 45 feet down. Green alewife and carbon 14. 2/4 during a 90 minute trip was a win. First fish my wife has caught in a few years. First time my daughter went on the boat. It was a full boat and a great night. Trying to get my first salmon
Slimer replied to jeepjeepjake's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
That is exactly how I started out a few years ago. I’d fish the piers and walk my kayak down to the beach on nice days. If you’re fishing from charlotte or Summerville pier I’d get out there soon. Spoons early morning and at sunset. Probably unpopular, but I only use ~4 colors and styles of spoons casting off the pier. Tear drop moonshine bloody nose, white with 3 dots, green toad or blue chrome kastmasters. Sometimes stick baits in the fall when I see them cruising. There are still some up shallow. We caught 2 kings and a coho under 30 FOW today, but had to put our time in. If you go out in a kayak close to dark, make sure you have lights, especially close to the pier. People don’t pay attention. — Just my 2 cents. Everyone has their own preferences and tactics they swear by. Some are sold on secrecy. I was fortunate enough to have some very helpful friends I met fishing along the way. Happy to PM more. -

Fishing from shore or boat? -
Anticipating a lot of flack with this post, but what’s everyone’s take on eating trout/salmon out of Lake Ontario? Per NYS guidelines, I've eaten a years worth since putting the boat in last month. I’ve read posts saying that when NYS tests the fish, they grind it all and test that. I’m not eating the skin, grey meat or any belly meat. Is this just a way to self justify eating more than advised? *Note - I’m primarily catch and release. Not killing every fish that touches my boat.

ISO Recommendations for Niagara River Guides

Thanks whaler. I knew the currents could be dangerous, but not like that. I appreciate the detail and warning. PMing for your two, but might stick to the Genny so my boys can go. -

I’m not following. Why not if he’s in a life jacket and we’re in a safe boat? -
We have fished Art Park and the power plant a few times and want to take our boat this fall/winter. Before we take the boat, we’d like to go with a guide for the first time. Looking for recommended guides. 2 adults and possibly one toddler.
