Went out for a short morning solo run from Braddock Bay. On the water by 6. Set up in about 120 fow. My 2 month old Fish Hawk Lithium probe decided to die on me, so I set up down 60. No clue if temp was right but some okay marks there. I picked up one decent salmon around 130 fow, didn’t weight him but maybe around the 13-14 pound mark. Lost another at the boat about the same size. Ended up getting call for work around 7:30 so had lines in for maybe an hour is all. By the way, if you know of anyone that is interested in selling an extra probe while I wait on the fish hawk warranty claim near the Rochester area, I would be very interested.

Went out on a solo run this morning before work. On water at 6:30, off by 8:30. Set up in 100, worked my way out to 190. 2 downrigger down 50 and 70, and a dipsy out 100. Landed 1 out of 2 bites on the dipsy, and boated this nice 19.5 pound king. Also had a small jack that hit the spoon. Spoon seemed to be the only thing they were interested in as it took all the hits this morning. Pictured is the spoon that had the larger king, not sure the name.

Hey thanks! I have read Captain Rob’s write up before. Probably the single best I have seen on copper setups. Also been out fishing with him before, hell of a captain. I was really wanting to know if there was any quick and dirty way to estimate how much copper was on this specific reel. Sounds like I’ll just be making a trip to the football field LOL.

Probably a dumb question, but I haven’t seen this asked before and maybe someone here is smarter than me. My neighbor (awesome dude) is moving to South Carolina to be with grandkids and clearing out a bunch of salmon fishing tackle. With some other stuff I bought, he threw in this copper reel. Said he couldn’t remember where it came from even. Anyways, I’m somewhat baffled at figuring out how much line is on it. Is there a preferred way? Thought about just taking my wife to an empty football stadium by my house to walk it out and measure….any insights?

Headed out this morning on a solo run. Was running downrigger, copper, and a dipsy. 4 for 4 on salmon plus a juvenile. Biggest was 16 pounds. Smaller of matures than as 12. Dowrnigger 80 down over 155 on an 11 inch flasher fly, 400 copper with a meat rig and a dipsy out 160 with a wonderbread spoon were winning tickets today. All in between 150-170 feet, ventured as close in as 100 and as far out at 210.

Thanks Gator. Makes sense, I did cast a couple while fishing at a pond just to get an idea of the action. Agree they would likely be a more aggressive presentation. I will toss out a couple in the spread once I get going and update either way.

Curious if anyone has tried running the Iron Decoy Lures for trolling? Saw these at the Niagara Fishing Show and was just intrigued enough to pick up a few. They look quite a bit different than normal trolling spoons almost more like a casting or jigging spoon. Definitely much heavier than would be typical (1 oz). Owner was a real nice guy, said they work good for either. Due to a combination of life events, I haven't had a chance to test them out. Curious if anyone has ran these? I will plan to throw them out on a couple of junk lines. I imagine it may fall into the category of uncommon/niche tackle but hey never know and I am always a sucker for something new. Seems like the salmon line is fairly new from my brief talk with the owner and may be the first season they have been around.

Captain Rick is absolutely the man!! Despite me not knowing anything and I’m sure asking 1 million dumb questions, Rick was very helpful. We got on the fish, and had a great day. Of course the sun decided to shine as soon as I got home, but can only ask for so much!

Apologies if this has been asked before, but does anyone have a good breakdown of the main Flasher colors and shapes? What motivates this question is I recently got the pictures orange flasher pictured as a bonus off a Facebook marketplace buy. It’s quite different than the flashers I have run in the past (see the other yellow for example). While both 8 inches, the orange one is a fair bit thinner and no fins on back. All this got me wondering, when should I be running which flasher? Is the orange even something I should bother running on Lake O? If so, just a different action than other flashers? This site is always tremendously helpful, so thanks in advance.
