    How much copper is on my reel?

My neighbor (awesome dude) is moving to South Carolina to be with grandkids and clearing out a bunch of salmon fishing tackle. With some other stuff I bought, he threw in this copper reel. Said he couldn’t remember where it came from even. Anyways, I’m somewhat baffled at figuring out how much line is on it. Is there a preferred way? Thought about just taking my wife to an empty football stadium by my house to walk it out and measure….any insights?

    Scent or no Scent?

    So I like to add scent to new lures or or ones that are out of the tackle box for the first time this year. Pretty simple Procure fish oil spray such as herring or bloody tuna.

    Downrigger line question

    I prefer 25# Blood Run Tournament mono for my rigger rods. Straight mono for flashers and I add Blood Run 20# fluoro leader for spoons

    My black releases are so tight that a 20# wont release them. I want to be able to see the bite, get to the rigger, release it myself, and reel in the slack. Plus I feel my hook set is so much better that way especially when fishing deep.

    What to use for backing

    So my understanding is you are setting up 2 braid diver reels and you are wondering if you should put backing on them first?

    I would. It will take a tremendous amount of braid to fill a 45 series Okuma reel. I would suggest 20- 30# mono as backing. Larger mono such as 50# doesnt lay on the reel as flat. I would also suggest putting on 1000' plus of braid. The mono should only be used as a way "eat up" reel space and will never ever see the water. 

    As for reel size. Some guys like the oversized reels for divers, such as the 45 series. Personally I use 30 series okuma reels and I spool on 300' of 25# to ensure the reel spool is 100 percent full when I spool on 1000' of ss wire or braid.

    Planer boards

    I will be heading to my house in the finger lakes for a couple weeks early may and plan on getting out on Ontario. How late in the season do people run planers for trout and salmon? Am I wasting my time and space hauling them up there?

     

    Mine go in the water on my first trip of the season and are used the entire season chasing fish on the lake!
