  1. Couldnt close the deal on opening morning although i heard plenty of gobbling and saw plenty of birds including 1 real nice tom (that strutted for over 3 hours, 100 yards away). This morning the whole flock was in the woods roosted and at daylight 6 hens (including 1 bearded hen), 3 jakes, and 2 mature toms flew off the roost and into my field less than 80 yards away. After a couple hours of watching birds, one of the jakes came over to strut for my 2 hen decoys. Well that got the attention of one of the big toms, and in the process of scaring off the jake, he ended up well within gun range. 1" spurs and 9 1/2" beard. Great day and certainly one of the craziest mornings i have ever spent in the turkey woods, that ended in success.

  2. A friend of mine is a "smelt dipper" and he fishes the niagara every spring. He said that this year was the best year he could remember in 15-20 years and he was in absolute awe over how impressive this years run was. One of those "walk across the river on their backs" type run.

  3. $1000 is not guaranteed every day. There are season passes but also daily passes so the payouts are based off of entry fees that apply for the day. For example the derby states that may 1 and 2 are $1000 but may 3 could be $50. Its all based on entry fees. Weekends should see the higher payouts and the weekdays much less just because of entries.

  4. Thanks guys, feels good to just be out fishing. Now lets see some Kings! The only story i have to rival this one was about ten years ago, during the 1st evening of the spring LOC derby, we were fishing off Olcott and all six rods fired of the boards at once. For a second, i thought for sure we had snag bottom. Turned out to be a school of hungry cohos and we struggled to land four of them.
