  1. Dear Has been,

The internal circuit board only controls the short stop "UP" feature.

I am not familiar with your model, but the older Cannons had a large wire-wound resistor on the circuit board in series with the motor in the down circuit that would cause the motor to run slower going down than going up. This significantly reduced the motor torque in the down direction. Any binding of the motor mount seems to significantly hinder the performance of the motor, and additional load could cause the resistor to overheat and burn out (open circuit). A crack in the case will cause this binding. I'm not 100% sure, but you may want to check voltage on both sides of the wire-wound resistor with the switch in the down position to see if this may be causing your problems.

    Good luck.

  2. I may have some info for you after next time out. I am currently running 2 Sub-Trolls. However, one of the Sub-Trolls was using the Depth Raider antenna, which is a much larger diameter. I too would lose the signal on this unit over 80 feet. I've had no problems with the other unit using the Sub-Troll antenna. Against everything my engineering mind tells me, I did try wrapping a wet paper towel around the Depth Raider antenna and it worked! I am switching out this to the smaller Sub-Troll antenna, so we'll see if that helps. I won't be out this weekend, so maybe the following weekend I will have more info for you.

  3. Team Trophy Seeker (Jim, Greg, Joe, and Scott) would also like to thank Scott, Keith, and Rob, as well as everyone else who was involved in this event. This tournament was very well run, and a lot of fun for us. This, for me personally, was my first tournament, and was a pleasurable experience. Our team really liked the informal, laid back style of this event. We look forward to participating next year.

But damn - you guys sure have a helluva population of mosquitoes over there...

  4. better still, get the Scotty power grip pinch pad releases.

As is well documented on here, I hate blacks releases. Scotty's do everything that blacks do, but IMO, are superior in every aspect and they are much easier to set and also to see on the rod when you have a shaker on. You can load the crap out of the rods and don't get any false releases.

    Tim

I agree with Tim. Although I don't hate the Blacks releases, the Scotty pinch pad releases just plain work, and are brainless to set. Easy to have newbies help set lines. Also, the comment about seeing shakers is spot on. I do have a Blacks release on each rigger, as they provide a way to terminate my probe riggers, and the shaft of the Blacks provide a spot for the Scotty clip that will allow rotation.

  5. 89 Force. Hmm... I believe that was designed before unleaded gasoline? Before you spend any money for parts, I would recommend you do a compression check. The leaded gasoline Force motors are notorious for piston coking.

Hopefully, if your problem is in the starter, possibly the ground connection is corroded? I wouldn't think the problem would be the starter itself, but I am no outboard mechanic. I did live through a few Force rebuilds though...

  6. We caught fish in Polls Bay (Harmony Bay), right out in front of Kirk's at the last marker, the mouth of East Bay, and the south shore of East Bay. Also a few other random spots that I probably couldn't describe. I also normally fish the little island just east of the inlet to Kirk's, just west of Williams Island (South Sister Island), but that area was getting worked pretty hard by other boats. Did try trolling stickbaits a little bit at dusk, but the skeeters were unbearable. Walleyes seemed to be hanging out on the shallower reefs, 5-10 FOW. We were drifting or slow trolling (<1 MPH) floating jig heads with crawlers and bullet sinkers. Again, I don't normally fish up there in June, so others may have better info.

  7. I just got back from Gull Lake yesterday! Had a tough week of fishing, but managed 2 fish fry's and brought home a limit, so it wasn't all bad. Had pretty decent weather, drank a few beverages, and hung out with some of my Canadian friends. This was my first June trip up there in many years; I usually go in September. The Canadian Conservation Officers were inspecting all vehicles towing boats crossing back over the 1000 Island Bridge. Fish were very finicky...

  8. I asked that same question to Curtis Kell, and this was his response:

"The original intent was to design the Depth Raider to match existing speed & temp units such as the Sub Troll and the Cannon SNT – which it does nicely. However, all three brands track about .4-.5mph slower than GPS. Also, there is a general feeling in the electronics industry that GPS at slow speeds is not very accurate. Say below 3 mph. One indicator is that even on a calm day GPS will bounce around by .5mph and it really shouldn’t on a calm day. Yet another variable is the Fish Hawk. This unit displays speed lower than GPS but higher than Depth Raider, Sub Troll, and Cannon SNT.

The big picture is that there is no calibrated instrument manufacturers can purchase and use to calibrate to water speed. We also now believe that even if we could provide a product with a guaranteed highly accurate speed, if it didn’t match other speed indicators on the boat some folks would still question the accuracy. The only real solution is to provide a means for users to calibrate speed to whatever other speed source on their boat they would like."
