  1. I have noticed this for years . All my big fish , including a 35 lb. 9oz  king , have come on the afternoon bite . It doesn.t seem to matter what part of the lake  . I fish out of Sandy pond when I'm at camp . I iive in watertown ,so it's an easy run to Henderson and the trench  when I'm home . The afternoon bite has always been better for me.

  2. Glad you recovered your rigger . I take my Cannons off when I'm not fishing . mostly for security reasons ,and have always been worried that when I slide the base into the swivel mounts ,It won't catch . So i made up safety lines using para cord from the rigger to my rear cleats . They are tied to the riggers permanently and I tied a loop in the other end to fit the cleats . Now when I slide riggers into mounts , I take the line and attach to cleats . No worries .

  3. These arn't good old NY black flies (no seeums) . These are stable flies (ankle biters ) and will wait till you have a good fish on and attack your ankles in force . LOL  . I posted on another thread on this forum , about these no good #%&*%*#@ 's . The only thing that repels them , IMHO , is a product called Buggspray for biting flies . I have used it for years and can vouch for it . That said , apparently the "Buggman" at Buggspray has decided to only make the biting fly spray in a "no fragrance" spray . I ordered and received two bottles of the  spray , in order to be ready for the late July and August bite (when those little critters seem to be at their worst )  . I can only hope it works as good as the original formulation (which had a very strong smell) . I will let everyone know my success (or failure ) with the new formula . I have added the website to order the Buggspray , MAKE SURE , when you order to get the BITING FLY formula , as there is more than one formula available . www.buggspray.com

Just a little P.S. Don't waste your money on normal repellants ( deep woods off and the like )  the flies like lick it off before they bite you . LOL

  4. I paid for Boat U.S. for a few years . But the more I looked into it the more it seemed an unneccesary expense . Any one interested should look up the laws governing marine towing and salvage . At some point a tow can become salvage and you are responsible to pay the salver the book price of your (at that point , it's THEIR boat ) to get it back . Laws are very strange and iron clad . I was towed in by the CG a few years ago after destroying my lower unit on a rock during very low water levels .  There was no charge for the service , but if i ever get a chance to buy those coasties some beers ............

  5. I read the following article and thought I should share it . According to the authors , Lake Ontario is the most stressed of the great lakes . And some of the stressors are : charter fishing , native species stocking , and non - native species stocking ( Chinook and Coho ? ) . Something to keep our eye on ? If I was a charter captain I would be researching this issue , to find out why they consider charter fishing a "stressor" .

  6. I stand corrected I was under the impression that a rifle had to be at leaste .24 caliber to be legal for big game . The law now states center fire . There are plenty of great guns on the market for varmint shooting . The Ar-15 may be one of them . But my choice would be a 742 Remington . we could argue the merits of one gun against anoter till the cows come home . I love the M-16 A1 /AR15 . Enough said . Does it have a place in my arsenal ?

It did , it doesn't any more .

  7. I just sent off a letter to my state senator advocating the training and arming of teachers and school administrators . If the heroes, Ms. Sherlach and Ms. Soto , had been armed maybe the only casulaties would have been the shooter and his mother . I have given this much thought and done a lot of soul searching and find that this is a reasonable precaution . We can't afford to put police in every school and the employees of all school districts undergo through background checks . These checks and training can be an ongoing (yearly) requirement. I am and always have been a backer of the NRA . I am a gun owner ,but my hunting days are behind me . I can't afford to chase salmon and Bambi too . But , maybe it's time to ban private ownership of assault ( NOT SEMI - AUTOMATIC ) rifles with high capacity magazines . The AR-15 type rifles in 5.56 mm( .223 caliber) ase not legal for hunting big game and way too powerful for small game . This type of weapon served me well in the Nam , but I can't see any reason to own one now . I agree that mental health issues need to be addressed , but hold very little hope of that happening . Even our military balks at taking on that issue . Wayne LaPierre is right when he said " the only thing that will stop a BAD man with a gun , is a GOOD man with a gun" . Rant over . Come on spring ,rods are ready .

  8. Fast and Silver is 100% right . I have a letter from the DEC stating that home made cut bait is perfectly legal as long as it is prepared by means other than just freezing . That means brining is an accepted way to prepare cut bait . So use smelt ( I have had some luck using fresh sardine fillets that I brine ) . Have long wanted to try smelt . Really wish Rhys Davis would get back into the cut bait business . Had very good results with Erie Dearie , but it is pricey.

  9. jason is right . When NOAA says 1-3 think 3-5 . the predictions are very inacurate . I have been out in calm conditions (flat) ,when NOAA is saying 1-3 . Ypu can't really tell till you're out there , or better yet ,have a buddy out there with a cell phone . Makes it easier to go back to bed LOL

  10. We were catching gobys at every depth at Henderson . We started at 25 fow and changed shallower and deeper (31 fow) and had the same result at every depth . We used fathead minnows and tried worms . Nothing but gobys ,with a few small perch once in a while .

  11. Not exactly on a par with a 20 # king for sport , but a plate of perch fillets sure is a nice way to end a day . My friend and i have been out 3 times in the last few weeks chasing perch . We have been from Catfish Creek to Henderson Harbor , and have caught very few perch . When we fished off Mexico point (Sage Creek) we caught nothing but gobys (at least 50) . This is very troubling to me . We have never failed to catch at least enough for a meal . Any body got any input ?

  12. Jared , 30 inches is out of the question . There is 18 to 20 inches in that channel . One thing I didn't mention , there are 2 bleach jug bouys just to the right of the channel going to sea , or the green bouy . Stay in the channel as they mark a rock the size of Gibralter that is about 1 inch below the surface . Be especially careful comuing in at dark , hitting that puppy would spoil your whole season .

  13. I've been staying on the South Pond for the last 2 weeks . The creek between the ponds is a challenge , but once on the N . Pond it's fine . You must go around Carl Island and pay attention to the bouys but the inlet is navigable for boats in the 28 ft class. If water levels continue to fall things may change . Fishing is hit or miss on Bay . Marking pods of fish laying on the bottom . Things can only get better in the next weeks .
