  1. I just saw a trailer on tv for a National Geographic Channel documentary on the Asian Carp (Flying Carp) which is going to air on Sunday , July 18th , at 10:00 PM EDT . The preview showed people standing in the bow of a boat catching these critters with landing nets as they jumped. Looked like a good way to break an arm or fall overboard if one of these brutes hits you. Maybe we can get a handle on what these fish are all about. Looks like their entry into the great lakes is inevitable .

  2. I would like to enter the Salmon Spectacular but I find that at that particular time I would be fishing solo. I checked the rules and find no reference to fishing solo. I have issues with the LOC derby over this , and would like clarification from Henderson Harbor on the question. I have emailed the derby but so far have not received a response. Does anyone have any info on the subject ? If I hear from derby headquarters I will post their response.

  3. I got my old schematics out and ,yes ,the pulley is held on by a 5/16 X 1" set screw. On the Unitroll HP you have to remove the pully inserts which are held onto the main pulley with phillips screws (4) ,to get to the set screw. Once you remove the set screw the shaft pulls right out. There are white plastic bushings between the shaft and pulley. You may want to replace them when you have it apart . I got drag washers and bushings from Capt. Gary's , nothing very expensive involved.

  4. Take the cover on the other side off (4 Phillips screws). The clutch and pawl are under there and the shaft comes out from that side . Check the drag washer (probably needs to be replaced ) and be sure to check the faces of the cluth washers for scoring. Pretty easy to dissasemble and put back together. Do one at a time so you have one for reference.

  5. Are these batts. deep cycle or deep cycle/starting (dual purpose) ? I am under the impression deep cycle batts. are not good for use as starting batt. , they are made to be almost totally discharged over time ,as in electric trolling motors, before being recharged . The sudden amp demand for starting shortens their life. I have one of the Auto Zone dual purpose marine batts. , going strong into it's 4th year.

  6. I can highly recommend Magee Canvas. They are in Brewerton, which is on Onieda Lake, but they have several mobile units which visit local marinas on a regular basis. I have had several mooring covers and top/side curtins made by this company over the years and the quality is unsurpassed. Their web address is www.mageecanvas.com . If you ask around at the pond you will find nothing but good things said about this company.

  7. I fished on the St. Lawrence River last Wednesday out of Clayton . The river is at least 2' low. The marina at French Creek has 2' under the boat , it usually is 4' deep in the marina . The water marks are evident on all the docks and rocks all along the river. This is a bad situation as this is the time of year when the water is usually the highest. The marinas will be high and dry by August if we don't get some serious rain.

  8. I have found over the years that spring browns in shallow water are very line shy. I have flatlined with 6# line on my rods , using stickbaits and spoons, for years and landed many 10 # browns without losing gear. Light drags are a must ! For in line boards I use 12 # mainline connected to 8# floro leaders using clear plastic trolling rudders for the connection. The trolling rudders also stop the board from hitting the fish/lure. This setup works for me.

  9. This is very troubling . $450 million in Obama's stimulus money will go to a Chinese company to build wind turbines that will be used in the great lakes. This is just wrong ! The stimulus money is OUR money, donated by you and I in the form of taxes. To think that the money will be used to put chinese to work goes against the grain. This is a result of the panic that the power authorities are generating to get their agenda passed without a lot of scrutiny. We need a time out and slow things down so that all the options are on the table. Ther is NO reason that wind turbine's cannot be built in the US. Let the Chinese build plants in America to build turbines used in the states. I am still very much opposed to putting a wind farm on or in any of the Great Lakes, but I am afraid that alternative energy is needed and will be a fact of life in the future. We need to keep our collective eye on the progress of this change and fight for what we know is right.

  10. It is my understanding that a license has already been granted to build a fourth nuclear reactor at Nine Mile Point. The only reason that I can see to build a windfarm on Lake O is to supply power downstate. The folks on the south shore of Long Island defeated a proposed off shore wind farm . They want the power without the turbines . Let us deal with the pollution both visual and material.

  11. I really can't understand how the politicians can allow a Spanish company (Iberdrola) to own power generation facilities in America . I have been told that National Grid's headquarters are in Great Britain . I would think power generation and delivery would come under national security and be looked after by homeland security. I guess the headlines I have been reading are true . The United States really is FOR SALE .
