  1. You could proably catch them right now. My earliest trip has been about Feb 15th. Boards and a pocket of colored water is the ticket. My boaty is out of storage (Fished Seneca yestetrday) so if this weather keeps up I may venture north in the next couple of weeks.

Its good to find out if your particular port is ice free before you go. Just post the question here and the locals usually give you a good report on the launch conditions.

  2. I am looking for a new cover for a 17' Alumacraft. I would like to be able to travel with the cover on, especially in the winter when road salt can get in the boat. I don't want a cover that can "chaff" the side of the boat when it flops in the breeze.

Let me know your experiences and which covers work the best for that application. Thanks

  3. I just picked up a 2007 Alumacraft Navigator Sport with Full Windshield, Pasenger Console and Full Stand-Up Canvas. I removed the console on the passenger side. Basically, I made the boat into a CS Model. If someone has a CS model and would rather have full windhsiled this will do the job. I marked every part when I removed it so reinstallition should be a couple hours. (Screws and about 16 pop rivets) There may be a minor amount of modification to the side plate on the CS model to make it mesh with the new console. I have detailed pictures of the parts showing how they go together. A minor amount of wear just above the glove box, just faded the grey paint to black. The clear acrylic in the canvas should proably be replaced, but the canvas itself is decent. I can send more pictures to anyone interested. I would like $590. If you have the bubble windshield for the CS model and would like to trade i will knock $50 of the price. If you want to come to my garage i will help you install it.

  4. You have stated in both cases the line snapped. So, first i don't see where changing swivels will make a difference as that is not the point of failure.

In my opinion 30 pound line is a little too light between a dipsey and flasher. Remember it was 30 pound line when new. A couple of hits will fatigue the knots and any abrasion will also weaken the line.

Maybe the 50 pound line on the fly was fatigued or compromised in some way.

My suggestions are to use at least 40 pound line between the dipsey and flasher, use a snubber, AND change lines often. Check the line to the fly every time you bring it in, and don't be afraid to retie.

  5. Directions:

From 14 North turn left at the 1st redlight on east 4th street. Go over the canal and make your first right. Boat launch Road. 200 yds ahead on your left.

From 414 when you see campers on your left take the first left after the campers. Boat Launch Rd 200 yds ahead on left.

Frpm 14 south go through about three redlights. At Main intesection turn right onto east 4th street. See above.

  6. We arrived at Seneca at about 1 30 PM, since we had fished Lake Ontario early in the AM (See South Shore Sodus report thread for that story.) The mudline at the south end was very productive, with all fish coming on sticks off planer boards.

I didn't keep track but at least 25 hits in about 3 1/2 hours. I don't fish Seneca that often but I may have to give it another try. Sounds like "Hooked Up" had a good day also. He must have got off the water before we arrived. The only other boat around was a duck boat coming to the launch as we arrived. he had done well also he said.

    SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS

Reluctantly headed out in the rough water. Set up and immediately had a board flip resulting in a broken ski line and loss of about 20 releases. Headed over to bolder pt to try to get out of the waves. We put out one board and immediately had a double. Had a few other hits but it was too hard to keep everything under control. We headed in after about 1.5 hours to redo the planer board line and put new releases on the line, hoping for it to lay down. No such luck. The water color was good with pockets of clody water and a temp about 40 degrees. I was sorry to leave as i know we could have had a good day with the right conditions.

Stopped at Seneca on the way home and had a banner afternoon on the edge of the mudline on the south end,
