  1. Hey Angelo,

    In my first response, I didn't realize the 80-MRG was the Roller Guide version. Obviously that is not a good downrigger choice.

    The 80-M or 86-M are great downrigger choices for Salmon. The 80-ML is a good choice for Spring trolling for brownies and cohos off the riggers.

    Of course the roller guides are great for wire, but I still like something beefier for pulling the dipsies deep. All my wire dipsies are MH action, both in 8' and 9'6" lengths.

  2. When currents get tough, make a mental note of the amount the rod tips are bending when you're getting hits if you're flatlining. With the riggers, try to observe the angle of the downrigger cables.

    Try to match that amount of bend or cable angle regardless of direction and current.

  3. I took my friend Jeff from C7 Photography out for an evening troll last Friday. He brought his son and his Nikon...

    I had my son and his cousin with me and we had a great time.

    The fishing was tough. We were just getting over the 2 day NE blow and inversion, so the fish were seriously scattered, but we did manage a mini-Lake O slam with four different species for the kids to see. (King, Brown, Laker, and Steel)

  4. I attended the meeting last night in Hilton. Once again, the IJC has done a horrible job of taking into serious consideration the interests (and welfare) of south shore Lake O residents and adequately representing them in their latest proposal, Bv7.

    Someone on the committee that developed it actually suggested that 'low interest loans' could be made available to shoreline residents to improve breakwalls or for damage recovery from the higher water levels. Waterfront homeowners already bear a larger tax burden (OK, due to the higher assessed values, and rightfully so). But, expecting them to bear the additional hardship of building higher, stronger breakwalls to deal with the proposed higher highs after 50+ years of regulation to the existing levels is simply unacceptable. Many residents will either be forced out because they can't afford it, be left with major damage, or just plain lose their homes. Low interest loans, my ass. How about the power generation and shipping interests with the deep pockets pay for every single lakefront property breakwall to be built up to withstand the new high high levels (with margin for storm surge.)

    NOT ONE of the proponents of Bv7 (in its current form) who spoke last night actually lives on the lake or runs a business like a marina on the water. NOT ONE.

    I love the Lake O fishery, and respect that the environmentalists want to improve the wetland breeding grounds. BUT, these BvX proposals just don't give any fair regard to those of us whose homes, life savings, and in many cases, livelihoods are founded on the PROMISE by the IJC to maintain the existing levels established 50+ year ago.

    Skamaniac and I fished on the JAMMER boat out of Wilson on Saturday 5/5 and got a 23 13 King on the board for a couple hours. Went from 19th at 5:30pm to gonezo first thing Sunday.

    The fish hit one of those Northland Tackle Live Forage spoons (has a tail shaped clacker by the hooks) running as a free slider off the 69 rigger.

  6. 27 foot length overall with integrated swim platform. Large cuddy cabin with built-in port-a-potty, open cockpit. JVC CD/MP3 Stereo w/ 4 speakers (2 cockpit, 2 cuddy). Sunbrella Bimini top and full cockpit canvas. 5.7L 260 HP MerCruiser I/O with Alpha 1 outdrive. Hydraulic trim tabs. Includes 1991 ShoreLand'r Trailer. Tires excellent - replaced in 2008.

    36" Berts Tracks along both rear gunwales. Nice varnished custom downrigger board that flush mounts on integrated rear cooler/locker lid. This boat fishes really well!

    This boat was serviced meticulously every fall, with a thorough winterization including all new filters and oil changes. Engine/outdrive coupler replaced by Bryce Marine 2011. Lower unit services every two years by Pro Marine. Complete tune-up with new wires, plugs, distributor cap and rotor in 2010. All new custom seat cushions in 2009.
