  1. I figure our boat sticker fees and boat trailer fees have more than paid for the services the state provides us related to our on-water fun. I figure there is extra money in those fees that would pay for the cost of pulling up the occasional frozen body. So I'm not costing anybody anything if I fall out while trolling in January. There's no argument, aside from rescue cost, that I see as anyone else's business; just like I think if you have proof of medical insurance, you should be allowed to ride a motorcycle w/o a helmet. Short of getting rid of this bone-headed intrusion on my liberty, how about arguing for an exclusion for people who have taken a boating safety class? We aren't defending our individual liberty to do stuff other people think is offensive or dangerous, or our right to be free from constant govt surveillance and police-state intrusion. Even though some would call me a liberal, I think my views are consistent with the fact that-- I despise government safety rules that infringe on my own right to risk my own life in any damn way I please. Especially when the POLICE enforce them. Give me civil liability, but not police force. I'm going to write my NY legislators. But we know the rule won't get rolled back. Tinker
  2. Thanks, Second Chance Well, I'm actually pleased.. it would have hurt much more if you were running the same program as I ran and nailing them. Funny, I spent the whole day in 100 fow or less, and didn't realize it till your post. I have no downriggers for now, so copper is about the only way for me to get down to 100+ ft deep.. given that I won't run meat rigs anymore. : ) I totally agree about water temp taking very long to cool off... and a long time to warm up in spring. I usually get at least one (intentional) swim in during October. Good point about the water still being warm far down the water column. So the shallows aren't quite as magnetic... yet. J
  3. I hate to admit it, but I had two guests along and got skunked Sunday. The lake was gorgeous and flat, and the fall colors made a great backdrop. Unfortunately, zero fish. Trolled perch Yo-zuri, black and purple R&R, a small silver/copper and various NK spoons in about 40ft from about 7:45 to 8:30. Then switched to copper (I use it on a big reel), which is almost always picks up something if I can keep it clean. Dragged it north from about Samson to near High Banks, running a dipsy with various slow spoons on the other side. Granted, I got chatting and dragged a clump of weeds on the copper quite a ways, but still... Changed to jigging near Belhurst around 10:30am. Nuthin. Dropped off my guests and tried a bit of jigging in the warmest water I could find, near Dresden. Nuthin. My finder is acting strange... I'm thinking the transducer has finally had it... so I was unable to mark any fish, or my jig descending, just a faint outline of bottom. I don't have downriggers, so that makes getting a multiple-rod program a bit more challenging. Surface water temp was, uhh (brain strains) about 58.2 on the E side from Sampson to High Banks, a teeny bit warmer around Belhurst, and 58.8 near Dresden. Anyway, I'd love to hear if someone else was catching on the N end of Seneca.
  4. All the places I mentioned are for shore fishing in the lake, but Goin Hungry is right about most streams being ok up to the first impassable barrier.
  5. Sorry, don't know much about shore fishing up there. seem to remember hiking down to a railroad trellis back in the day, to get to some shallowish water that was the N end of cayuga, but it was not really kosher. I also don't know about Cayuga Lake State park shore fishing... it is on the west side of Cayuga, and you'd have to drive past it to get to Taughannock Falls State Park. Taughannock Falls State Park has several nice little shelters... it is a comfy place to plop a minnow or sawbelly in and wait. I caught a lot of fish there before I had a decent boat, and while studying in grad school. Unfort, I always did better there in the summer than now. You can reach some deep water by casting off the fishing shacks near the boat launch outlet, possibly 80 feet if you really launch it. 'Course, the lake goes much deeper. I liked the shacks facing south better, though. People will probably be trying to use egg sacks this time of year, but I think I caught about 5 fish on sacks ever. For shore fishing, did best with sawbellies (may not be avail now), bass minnows, and skinny worms. Good luck.
  6. I live just north of Sampson on the east side and watch the perch guys every morning while I drink my coffee. Do these guys have jobs? Maybe 2nd shifters. I can tell you that they've been at it hard about 3 weeks now near me. The hot spots seem to move around a lot, and about half the boats have been going deeper lately- to about 25 feet of water. About 2 weeks ago (whenever that brief melt was), I saw a boat stealthily reeling in fish after fish. Haven't seen any of them sit on a good school since. But that doesn't stop some of them from fishing the same spot for a long while. Sorry, can't quite see what's working via binocs.
  7. "Sonny", as many of you know him, is a gem. You seem a little bummed, my friend! I think the best thing I can say about him is that if someone is getting picked on in a bar, I think he'd be the most likely person in the room to help the sap out. And I don't think many people would stay in Sonny's way after he gave them the hard eye, either. He's also a creative, independent thinker. I was stunned to see a "Hillary" sticker on his truck a couple of years ago. That must have been popular in the logging yards! Sonny said he figured DC was all a big money grab anyway, and she'd know how to grab some as a Senator for New York. He wouldn't fish with me for years 'cause I wear a suit for work, but I'm proud to say I've spent many hundreds of hours with him on the water and we rarely ran out of fun convo. I wish y'all didn't know this, cause there always seems to be somebody else wanting to fish with my buddy when I shake free from my work, but there it is ... Sonny (Fishstix) - you are the man.
