  1. Power Assist steering =
Power steering pump that is operated by the engine power pump which moves the Mercruiser power cylinder (not the Teleflex cylinder) . Cylinder required HC5328 to work with a SeaStar Helm pump and lines. You will have a hydraulic power assist steering, meaning, a hydraulic helm pump (HH5271), two steering lines, that run down to a power assist cylinder (HC5328) which in turn screws into the Mercruiser power assist cylinder (Mercruiser part) that is run from the power pump and this Mercruiser cylinder is connected directly to the drive.

    Non power assist steering =
No power pump and/or power steering cylinder (no Mercruiser cylinder on board, no power pump) requires manual Hydraulic cylinder # HC5332. This means that all that you will have is a helm pump (at the steering wheel), two steering lines, going to a steering cylinder attached directly to the outdrive (HC5332).

  2. If I can my idea on this.
If tou don't want to spent to much money and for the kind of fishing you do, there is a Lowrance or Simrad transducer that can fit youre needs.
It's the HST-DFSBL; it's a 50/200 khz that offer 29 deg. at 50 khz good to find fish between the bottom and top and 12geg. At 200 so very good for bottom fishing.

With the Simrad or the Lowrance you can use both at the same time splitting your screen in has a example 3 panels: 1 for mapping, 1 for the 200 and the other using 50

    Part #: 000-0106-77

Thee is also the same but with the downscan so you can have the function: Fish Reveal

    Part #: 000-12569-001

  3. You can mix any generation starting with a Gen3 and up.

Legacy Mode is enabled automatically when:
    • When HDS Gen3, SonarHub or StructureScan 3D are not updated with the latest software
    • An legacy HDS Gen1, Gen2 or Gen2 Touch unit is on the network
To determine if your system is in Legacy mode, refer to the Sonar settings menu.

  4. There is some very interesting new things coming from Lowrance, specially a new unit just below the HDS Live at a more affordable price. It's the new Elite FS (fishing system) with some excellent mapping include in the unit, can control autopilot, the new transducer Active Target and more

Here a short introduction video: Nice introduction on the new Lowrance Elite FS (fishing system) and on the new Active Target

  5. I post the answer on another website but I am posting here also, maybe it can help somebody else:

As stated, using a kicker when your main engine use an electric power steering pump will discharge your main battery because everytime that the kicker turn the pump is activated and it draw a lot of amp. This is a major problem specially if you want to use an autopilot.

To start you need two batteries a kicker kit from Mercury and a isolator.
The part# for the kit is: 8M0149838 which I understand does NOT include an isolator. For Verado models, an isolator that can handle the FULL OUTPUT of the alternator is recommended, so the recommend part# for the isolator is: 8M6006077 (140 Amp Isolator).

The kit and isolator enables the Verado to charge both batteries ...as needed . Done correctly, it charges the start battery first then the house as needed.

One is the start battery and one is what we call the "house" battery. The "house" battery is needed for a boat with Verado power steering and a kicker. The kicker doesn't put out enough charge to keep up with the amount being used by the power steering pump when the Verado is not running but you are using the Verado power steering on the kicker. A kit installed (sold by Mercury) enables the Verado to charge which ever battery needs it Tournament style boats with huge electronics and lots of them, also incorporate the "house" battery .

The electronic steering. Apparently it just eats up the battery even when its off

It’s not an electronic power steering it’s a electric pump habitually on Verado 200 and more. I just want to be sure that you are running a electric power steering and yes if it’s the case it takes a lot of battery when you don’t run the right set-up
