  1. Friends, Family and lots of quality fish!

Sunday/Monday fished with a buddy & his daughter. Couple lakers and a bunch of Kings! 20 pounder was the highlight! Mostly a spoon bite, couple on flys & 1 on meat.

Thurs/Friday my wifes cousin and her step dad came to fish. 6 Kings each morning and 1 Steelhead. 4 Kings at 18 pounds plus on Thursday all on SD/Fly

Saturday night fished with my wife. 2.5 hours lines in. 5 for 8. 4 Kings, 1 Atlantic. 22pds & 23pds were the 2 largest Kings. Mag NBK on a pinned cheater down 65 &  SD/FLY on a Chinook diver took the two big fish.

120'-180' was best this week but we took fish as far out as 330'. Junk lines only produced a few fish all week. Divers were best for us taking the majority of the big fish.

Whats every ones opinion on the Best Deep V Aluminum Boat out there? Thinking 19' -21', Also looking for one with an Outboard ! Looking for the widest most stable Boat I can get! Thinking of Downsizing from my Fiberglass boat !

Going to get a lot of answers & opinions here on this one. Assuming this is for trolling Lake O? Or are you looking for a multi species boat?

Here is my 2 cents. In 25+ years of boat ownership I have had many different Aluminum boats, Starcraft, Tracker, Smokercraft, Monark and some others. I personally don't think there is a "Best Boat" its what is best for you.... size, layout, features and cost among other things need to be taken into consideration.

If you want a cuddy the Older Crestliner Sabre's & Stracraft Islanders are a favorite among many. Open style boats the Starcraft's (Fishmaster & Super Fisherman) Lunds and Crestliners are well liked.

If the budget is fairly loose the west coast style welded aluminum boats are hard to beat. Kingfisher, Northriver, Hewescraft, Duckworth and several others. These style boats are very common from the California coast to Alaska. Starting to see more here in the Great Lakes.

  3. Network it!   Your Elite 7 TI has an NMEA 2K port. You can purchase another Elite 7, or another any other model with NMEA 2K and network these together.

Both units will share the same transducer. So you only have to purchase another head unit. Additional transducer not needed.

Network will also allow the two units to share waypoints and others data.

So if you are at the back of the boat and mark a waypoint on the graph it is instantly shared with the unit at the helm.

Running a small NMEA network is very easy. Iots of info online regarding this.

As for the mounting. On my rig I mounted the stern graph & fish hawk together. Section of track, Cisco electronics mount and a piece of starboard on top of the Cisco mount to create a larger platform for both units.

Never being able to leave well enough alone, I have retrofitted my Chinook Divers with Sam's Pro releases.....

Same setup Anglers Avenue video shows for inline boards ( which I use on my Church boards)   Any lead length I want, no diver drag fighting fish.  Running Big Game 30 lb. mono ahead of the wire.. The releases are loose enough to pivot as diver angle changes.  OR-16's in the back.

This idea I like! Gives you the option to change lead length like the Slide Diver but unlike the slide diver can be easily removed & stored when not in use.

Started fishing Chinooks last year and really like them, much better then regular Dipsy IMO.

I assume you are running a bead & inline swivel up from the lure like the Slide diver set up? or did you do something different?

  5. Well for me lake Ontario this time of the year for a 6 rod spread 2 riggers, 2 divers, 2 junk lines.

Typically start a little higher and closer to the boat first thing in the morning and spread out & down as day goes on and adjust to marks & strikes.

  6. In regards specifically to Oswego. When did you fish & where? Lots of Browns in & around and just outside the harbor walls & near shore.

As for the Kings before the east wind last Friday there was plenty around, we did best 40-70' Short cores, shallow divers & riggers all taking fish.

After Friday there was some still around just not as many. Few here & there in small pockets.

Die-Hard, NBK, Frost-Bite & Moonshine Crab face in that order all produced

Well I don't know how much tape you put on your spool or if bloodrun wire is different than the AFW camo wire but I ended up needing almost 100yds of 20lb backing to get my counters to be right. I literally just spooled these reels 2 days ago, first reel I put the whole 1000ft of wire on. Measured out 100ft in my yard and walked it and the line counter did not read 100. So I added backing on top until it was right and then reeled it onto my 2nd reel. I don't remember the exact number I used for backing but it was very close to 100yds.

The Blood run certainly could be a little different/thicker. I spooled 3 of them up last week and have 1 more left to do.

1 layer of tape across spool before wire. The second pass wrapped with wire but following the line guide so its overlapped. So it might equal 3 layers or so.

Maybe I should've titled this help spend my money, but here goes.  It's time to upgrade/replace the rod holders from the original owner.  After reading as many old threads as I could find on this, I'm coming to the community here for your expertise.  As you can see there are Driftmaster and Scotty/Cabela's holders from the original owner.  They work fine but not really ideal or secure for trolling.  Hopefully the pictures show enough.  I'm thinking either 24 or 36" track for Cannon or Cisco rod holders.  Maybe down the line adding a tree, but definitely not this year.  Or another thought was adding a Big Jon multiple set near where the old Scotty is.  I know I read an old thread on track length for certain setups at one point but can't find it again.  What length of track would be ideal for running 2 rod holders for now, and either adding another or a tree?  Does the 24" or 36" allow that?   I want some flexibility with moving things around but I don't want the landing strip look up and down.  I know everyone has their preference for track and rod holder systems.  I'm leaning more toward Cannon holders and Cisco track as they seem to be the most for your dollar with good customer service.  Thanks all for your advice and experience in advance.

    Jeff

Tough to have it both ways.

My feeling as I think most would agree. If you are putting in a track system put as long as you can fit. It just gives you more options for positioning & repositioning of rod holders and other equipment. I have multiple tracks on my boat for rod holders, down riggers, net holders, cup holders, tool caddy etc.

I position my holders differently for early spring browns vs summer fishing for kings when running dipsys etc. Track system gives you the versatility to do this with ease.

As for what brands its a matter of personal preference. I have Cisco tracks, Cisco & Traxstech rod holders. Cisco service is second to none. I had them make a few custom items and all went smooth with the process.

I can tell you for certain that an Okuma Coldwater 30 with 1000' of wire needs backing or the counter will be off. Looks like the Saltist 30 has less line capacity that an Okuma 30. It may end up not needing any backing but your best option is to do what Yankee said and find out for sure. I don't like having braid tied directly to the spool, so if you do end up needing backing I would use some mono instead of braid imo.

Coldwater 303DS 1 wrap electrical tape across spool before wire & knot. Then pass tape across with wire wrapped in tape and 1000' of Bloodrun fills spool perfect.

No way to mount it without pulling the deck and putting in a bigger console.
Had to go with a Bimini. Pretty disappointing but it is what it is.

Oh that sucks. Boat looks great regardless. Someone must make one for that boat that will work without too much difficulty installing? Or may an arch so you have rocket launchers and can get those planer reels elevated

  11. Motor bracket or remove the screw clamps and pads as mentioned above. (if that will allow enough room in the throat of the kicker bracket)

Either way you are drilling & bolting to the boat. Tie bar & troll controller and you will be good to go.

The size 50 is a better option IMHO, will hold more backing, esp if you are using it for Kings. What I have in my notes for the 50 is: 100 full passes; back and forth of the level wind is 1 pass, plus full core should fill it perfect.

Thank you, just to confirm 100 full passes w/30pd braid as backer?
