  1. Thanks for the replies! With my son out of the house now, I've had to resort to puting the spool under my Great Lakes Planers tightening knob on the dual rod holders. But it only works if the spool has a center hole big enough for the 1/2" bolt.

Otherwise, it was always my son holding the spool on a pencil or screwdriver, with gloves on so he could apply some resistance.

  2. I've seen all kinds of gizmos and gadgets on the market that claim to help you put new line on your reels without line twists.

How do you put new line on your levelwind reels? I'm talking about mono, flouro, braid, lead core, copper, and wire dipsy line. What gadget, Gizmo or technique have you found that absolutely works with all line types?

I get a kick out of reading all the guys that aren't computer wizards. I remember telling my neighbor he wasted his money on that thing cause they are never gonna last. He helps me with what I need to do. You would think by now I would have learned them

Sometimes our jobs require us to be computer savvy. I've learned to embrace certain aspects of this high tech world we live in, but but my knowledge and computer skills are still way behind average. Don't even mention what smart phones are capable of. I'm not smart phone savvy either.

I find it ironic that people have spent 10's of thousands on boats and etc, but fret over paying $300 for a good rainsuit. ( Kinda like the people in the $2000 box seats at the yankees game with the $2 plastic poncho) . I like my Cabelas Guidewear very much

I agree, which is why I like rolmops comment about using rain gear for more than just fishing. I need good rain gear for outside chores around the house more than I need it for fishing.

  5. I agree Les, rain gear is in that category of getting what you pay for. I want something that is comfortable, breathable and made to last. It gives me something to research during the off season so I am ready for next spring. I'm not looking for top of the line stuff, but a quality set at a reasonable price.

  6. I have decent rain gear but it makes moving around the boat a little (maybe a lot) cumbersome. It fits like a straight jacket and doesn't flex much at all. I think it's thick PVC. Sometimes I'm more wet from sweat than from the rain!

I've noticed the good flexible rain gear is pretty expensive, so I've just stuck with my uncomfortable rain gear. Besides, when there's rain in the forecast, it's usually accompanied by high winds and big waves, which are not a good combination. That makes me wonder if good rain gear is worth the money, or if I should just stay home on those rainy days.

Got any suggestions from personal experience?

  7. It's time to replace my lead core line. I'm considering Sufix 832 or Stealthcore. I like the 27# test lead core but the 832 is only offered in 12# & 18# with claims that it is 70% stronger, dives 30% deeper, and has 3 times the abrasion resistance of other lead core lines out there. Is this true or a marketing gimmick? I know Sufix is a reputable brand. What about the Sufix Performance line?

Just looking for opinions from those of you who have personal experience with certain brands that you use. Thanks in advance!

Well, this year's annual trip will be momeorable for all the wrong reasons.

Flew in yesterday, got out yesterday afternoon, after a slow start (no going from 100-155) got my nephew his first King. Missed another, both FF, white and white (both in 85 FOW). Fish were just stacked in 65-85 FOW. So, woke up this morning optimistic for a big day...

Well, last night was the beginning and end of our trip. Got about 50 yards outside the Salmon River, everything rigged and ready to go, opened up the throttle and... Boom, engine done. Maybe not blown, but dead for now. Had to ruin a nice family's morning getting a tow back to the river lighthouse. Then, had to walk 3 plus miles over to the Pine Grove boat launch to get to the truck and trailer...

So, here until Wednesday, no way to fish, and $400 minimum to fly home early. Checked with a couple charters who, understandably, are all booked up. One might have a fellow Captain with room to at least try and get in a trip tomorrow morning to salvage something, but haven't heard back yet...

Well, a week of fish stories, just not the kind I'd hoped for, especially for my nephew and brother in law who don't come up every year like I do...

Good luck to everyone the rest of the season, and thanks again to those who helped us today, and in days past when needed!

L.J. and the crew of the Bigfoot 2...
