  1. I went from a cramped 1988 Grumman CC 16.5 footer to the 2005 FM196 with a 115 merc 4S, and a 9.9 kicker,  which to me is like fishing in my living room.
I love it.  I tow it with a toyota highlander no problem.  It's  a big water boat set-up for trolling with 4DR's and dipseys..  On Oneida its a little clumsy with the high sides if you want to sit down and jig (nothing beats a casting platform), but when the waves kick-up you will be glad you have it.
Anything newer than mine should have a 150hp or more.
    as a reference, I paid 18K (Loaded), May, 2019

  2. Last Spring I decided to replace the floor in my Grumman CC 16 footer, 1988. (it sold on this site last May)
After taking the battery and tank out  from under the splashwell, I noticed  that the transome was very soft.

There was about 10" of exposed  wood and you could scrap it away like it it was wet cardboard.   After removing the motor , and transome trim,   it was apparent how bad the decay was.
I removed all of the original transome and made a new one from 3-layers of 1/2" marine grade plywood.

So be sure to stick your head under the splashwell and poke around with a screwdriver to look for soft wood.

  4. Small boat owner and was wondering how far out do you have to go. Have Dipsy's and downrigger's for the Finger Lakes fishing and wanted to give the big lake a try on a south wind.

Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

I have a 16 footer CC. I am almost always the smallest boat out there.  I watch the wave reports (weatherunderground.com) and if it's 2 foot or less your are fine to go out.  I was out in 3 footers 2 weeks ago,  its a little uncomfortable but still safe enough.   You have to know your boats limitations and watch for changing conditions.

    SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS

We turned right out of the Salmon river and trolled between 10 and 18 FOW. We picked up all 5 within a 500yd distance about mile up shore towards Sandy pond (4 small and 1 around 5#). Nothing on spoons. All on sticks Blk-Silver with orange bellies, would'nt touch the FireTigers. Picked up 3 before 9:00 (one throwback with a lamprey hole almost through the other side). Added trolling sinkers after 10:00 and picked up 2 more in deeper water. Absolute perfect conditions. Cloudy water and cloudy skies.
