  16. My fish area recommendations would be for northern pike is anywhere around the Eel bay area, upstream from Eel bay between Picton & Grindstone Island. I have good luck in there with DR's........in 30 to 50 FOW. And as Spinfly said, stop at the TI bait store and see what the rumor mill is saying..... The west side of Carelton Island, near Cape Vincent, near the US side of the main channel is good for Eyes and maybe a northern or 2..........We fished for Eyes over Memorial Weekend and they were rumored to be hitting in the channel between Picton & Murray/Maple Islands.....but we never took any..... Good Luck...
  17. Hey guys I would like to shed some light on navigation etiquette. I have been around boats all my life.....power & sail. Recently, after 25 years, just took again the 8 hour NYS Boater Course. Which I will share, what was discussed from the "text book" side of the course. I will try to summarize, and some instances these may not reflect my own opinions. In a nut shell, sail has the right of way over power in almost all circumstance. Power boats are in 100% control of their course and speed. Sail boats are not, they need wind. My comment and opinion on this, If an operator of a sail boat has the right of way over a power, the power craft should adjust course and speed to avoid a situation. But on the other hand, if the power craft has DR's out and say maybe some planer boards, or even say anchor'd, the sail craft should be respectful and give the power craft some breathing room. I think some sail operators navigate the rule to a Tee and can at at times be less then respectful. Now the subject of a power craft overtaking another power craft. The boat being overtaking has the right of way and the boat doing the overtaking needs to overtake by adjusting speed and course in my opinion in a respectful manner. Does this happen? Size of boats doesn't play into it all, except for when navigating on say the St. Lawrence River, when the giant lakers and ocean vessels have the right of way, due to their lack of ability to change speed and course. Which by the way, we are supposed stay clear of them by 150 feet. When power craft is doing the overtaking, a respectful operator, should consider his wake, and passsing distnace to the overtaking vessel....Does this happen?....hmm......My opinion on all of this, is that if an operator is a repectful operator, no feathers will get ruffled and will give other boats room to pass at a comfortable speed and distance. We had a situation last year that really left me scratching my head.....We were in a 19' starcraft, trolling at say what maybe tops 3mph, on the St. Lawrence near Cape Vincent, not in the bouyed main channel, with DR's, when from the distance a very large leasure, pleasure power was "overtaking us". This boat was under almost full power and its course did not change, heading right at our stern from behind. This had to be a 50 to 60 footer, 2 story with full kitchen, bedrooms. etc.......you get the idea.........he never changed course or speed until within about 150 feet or our boat......now let me also add that this area of the river is maybe a few miles wide, and we were in 15 to 20 FOW, and there was not another boat in sight. So I asked myself, what the hell was this guy thinking, he could given us a pass at least a 1/2 mile on either side of us.....but no he came right on top of us, with a big wake. Everyone on his boat had beverages in hand and were hotting and hollering........When they passed, I showed them that they were number 1 in my book.......anyway that's my opinions and hope this helps...... Thanks guys... Scott
  18. I have for sale, 2 older electric Big Jon downriggers with mounts. All work great. Would like to get $150.00 ea. obo for the Big Jon's. .......make an offer........they are located near the Watertown/Henderson area. PM me if interested. Thanks Scott
  19. Dave, I think I ran into your skunk's brother Friday night...winds under 5 mph, water temp mid to upper 50's....I left the dock in HH around 7pm and headed to Black River Bay, tried the DR's in 25 to 45 FOW with spoons and a jointed rap. It appeared to be a ghost town on the Fish Finder.....wasn't real sure if the Eyes were in the shallows or in the deeper water. Friday was a very bright, calm day and thougt maybe the EYEs may have gone deep. So I went shallow. Went up to the channel markers heading in to Dexter, tried jigging in the weeds with worms in about 6 to 12 FOW......skunk'd. Had a feelig that deep water was the place to be........ran out of time and headed back towards the HH launch. Stopped for a few minutes, probably 9:15ish, at the west side of Bass Island and tried a few casts. Skunk'd. Had fish jumping right before dark, but no takers...... So yes, lets find these skunk's a new home.......... Scott "Reel Nauti"
  20. Memorial Weekend Report.......skunk'd, skunk'd, skunk'd..........Managed to get 3 widdle perch, used them for bait, even considered using dynomite if I had some........Didn't fish as much as first anticipated, camp projects took priority, and the old "Honey Do" List kept getting bigger.....as usual. Headed on the river around mid morning on Saturday to Eel Bay looking for a deep hole that we always wanted to mark with gps.....got it now. It was a fishing trip and also a boat check trip with new DR's on the boat. The fishfinder was showing fish right on the bottom around Picton Island in 30 to 50 FOW. Trolling with DR's and had no takers........Saw alot of other boats searching too.....quick stops for a few minutes then off again to try another area. We ventured to the west side of Carelton Island for Eyes and made a couple of runs in the 30 to 40 FOW areas around channels bouys, but again no takers. Headed back to the rock shoals near Clayton where depths run 70 to 80 up to 15 FOW and thats where we got the widdle perch in about 50 FOW with Fish being shown on the FF stacked like cord wood at around 50 to 60 FOW. Tried Jigging to get some takers and again Skunk'd........Around 7pm went back out along main channel up stream from the TI Bridge and had some tail tasters on my minnow loaded jig but no biters. Figured could have been Eyes. Will keep updating, hopefully with more to report.
  21. Thanks for the welcome guys........Todd, I will give you a shout on 68 next time out in HH.......
