Just an FYI- I'm not sure about the downstate part of the canal but on the upper part of the canal from Rochester west there is a speed limit and it is nowhere close to 25 mph> basically your boats registration  number and description is logged in at any lock or lift bridge on the canal that you pass through by the operator and each operator is telephoned ahead of your arrival to the next lift bridge or lock with your information. If you arrive in real short fashion they can tell basically your estimated speed from the time it took to get there from the other bridge or lock and the troopers will be there to ticket you if excessive speed is recorded. This is mainly to protect the canal from erosion due to excessive wakes.

Check the Canal map There are many places to the east that it is allowed to do 25+ MPH

  2. Nick:

I talked to a guy who bought a Diesel Trawler from Long island to Seneca Lake and he did it in a long  weekend

Coming up the Hudson and then the Mohawk to Oneida lake and then on to Seneca  He said he could make 10mph all the way.   About 35 hours or him

If you had a faster boat that could do 25 mph average I think you would make that trip which is 300 miles in 2 long days.

With a "BIG" boat with twin big blocks 454's you better plan on lots of fuel my guess is 400 gal  or more.

BTW there was a Bayliner 32 up n Henderson with twin 4 Volvo engines>? Maybe diesels ? That would be a good fuel saving option?

  3. Diesel Vs Gasoline Engines [Boats]

I keep wondering why so few boats on the Grate Lakes  [inland waters] are Diesel powered ? Diesel motors are ! Higher torque and last longer and use safer fuel,

as far as fire hazard is concerned. Many ocean going fishing boats as well as sail boats have diesel power, so why not here? The alternative used most in salt water

happens to be multi engine outboards and that is not the case here either.

Would you buy a diesel ?

I would even though I would them be stuck hauling fuel or having to go to bigger ports where it is available.

My Truck is a Diesel and I love it , Power and economy when pulling a load!

31-36ft. We were pretty set on a boat and then looked at the downstairs of a 01 cruisers... hard to find a luxurious downstairs with fishing room upstairs.

Do you want to do a bunch of work on a boat? I  saw a Rommer for sale cheap ! Hard to find and super good hull.

old 327's  but it was running and a fire sale .. $2000 is cheap

IF you are going for a ride Contact John Orvec over  in the oak and look at his boat to get an idea of both luxury and fishing space. [Trautman ] he is a pro and on Lake Ontario United too. One of the best guides I ever met.

  5. So Nick :

How big is "BIGGER"  and are you thinking Trailable ? or not?

Love looking at boats and I have seen some BIG TWIN ENGINE boats over 30 that

could sit on a trailer [ but over 120 inches wide] permit needed to trail them.

Troutman over in the Oak ran a 11 meter with twin 455's and loves it for charter

An express cruiser design that big is very nice and handles 5 and 6 foot waves

  6. So Nick :

Are you really thinking of trading boats? How big Are you looking to go?

Trailable or you going to keep it at the Marina?

I ask because I know of a 28 foot single screw full inboard down in Penn Yan

full cabin fly bridge on a trailer. You would have to rig it but it has potential.

I would even tow it to Ontario for you [once] I have a diesel truck .

I should have bought that one but it is just to big to trail every week

They could cut out all the lake trout stocking, I don't go to Lake O to fish those slime trout. The only thing there good for is fertilizer. There just hogs to eat the bait fish...

    Ditto's there!~

Remember that Sawbellies are weather sensitive and a hard winter kills lots of them.

We need several more mild winters to keep Ontario warmer so that the population rebounds

to what we had in the 1990's

If 100 lb kings eat Kokanee, I'd bet they'd eat one hell of a lot of bateballs first. We are experiencing some of best Lake Ontario fishing in years. Why not leave well enough alone. I don't know how many 30lb kings you have cranked in but a 20 pounder can leave me looking for a tube horse linament.

Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

How many 30+ pound kings ?  50+   even a dozen 40+ pound fish in this lake and on in the Kenai river that was 71 pounds . But that was way back in the 1980's when we had the ideal conditions with Saw bellies out the wazoo ! before the crash in the Saw bellies population around 2000 I started fishing kings in 1882 and quit in 2000 and returned last year in hopes of finding a returning fishery

  9. Kokanee Salmon ..

The Kokanee is a tiny cousin of the Sockeye salmon and is most often 10 inches long or so and a giant would be 15 inches long.

Lake Ontario has a good number of King Salmon aka Chinook Salmon that in the right situation can actually top 100 pounds [Kenai river Alaska]

I was wondering what might happen IF New Your or Ontario Provence were to introduce some Kokanee Salmon into several rivers on the lake.

The Kokanee could be a good food source for the kings and we then might see those kings get bigger, really bigger! say in the 60 pound range?

I would also like to see some of the Kenai river Species genes imported to the hatchery and added to the genetic mix we not have to increase size as well.

I remember when they introduced the Skymania Steelhead and for a few years we had a few that were spectacular jumpers when hooked, the Atlantic Salmon

has taken their place, and I think we should have more Atlantic Salmon and fewer Cohos stocked personally.

Keep in mind that the Sawbelly forage base in lake Ontario is still fragile and a very cold winter will knock them back and we will lose a big chunk of the forage

base that allows us to have the great King Salmon fishery we have.

  10. J-Plugs

I remember catching a lot of kings way back in the late 1980's and 90's using j-Plugs

Why hasn't anyone been pulling any J-Plugs this year?

They worked then They should work now Remember to pull them close to the Down rigger weight

I sure plan on trying some next trip out.

  11. When the lake flattens out again Perhaps you might try pulling a big J-Plug and see

what happens ... I quit fishing Ontario in 2000 and now recall that about this time of year

we would pull big ladder back J-Plugs and had good success, I had forgotten that until

We were heading home on the trailer. IF I can find a crew I might be back Weather permitting

    on Friday After lunch.

PS nice boat [ same model as mine but a few years younger]

  13. Hughs Marina Saturday

I have a choice to make Saturday. Is anyone else going out of Hughes Saturday ?

With a new boat with only 2 trips under our belt I would like to know if there will be company should

something break and I need  a tow.  I am always willing to give a tow in that same situation.

I'm hoping that the fish turn on this trip, last time out it was hot and no action anywhere ! [Monday]

  14. Thanks guys

Mudflat I have a bag and have used it. This is a new boat [to me] and we were out

yesterday and trolling is not a problem . it is in tight quarters like on the Canal that

    is a bit ugly.

My Trolling plate has 3 positions and in the 45 degree down it works great for trolling at

    2.2 to 2.6 mph

The Wife wants to do a Canal tour ???  and that is where I want help, but I suspect that

there is not much that can be done to correct this problem except trade up to a bigger

    inboard system.
