  1. I almost got killed and my front door got smashed forward in Irondequoit this morning.

I had just put my coffee cup in my bag, ready to hit the woods, standing the front side of the truck when a car slammed into my open door just inches from me and smoked my door against the hinges forward. He played chicken with a car going in the other direction and didn’t account for the open door and pedestrian on the other side of the equation.

I’m fine and the truck door is shot, but I am more mad about not being able to hunt this morning. Didn’t give the guy the business either, I never get too mad at people when it’s pretty obvious how bad they messed up.

Kinda gets you thinking about how life can change at any moment, this morning I was about 5 inches from being dead or severely injured. So, I’m not either of those and that’s the bright side I guess.

  2. Sat morning and night Mon, Tues, Wed, and still have Thurs/Friday to go. In the first three days I have seen 3 deer. Grated one was a real nice shooter that was too far. Time has been split between Irondequoit and Brockport. Both pretty much Mecca’s for deer. The brockport property I know needs work and plots to pull more deer, so that’s more of a next year situation, but the lack of deer in the Irondequoit sits has me really scratching the head....

  4. I am looking into the Loan Wolf hunt ready system (sticks and stand all pack together). I already have a climber and I am quick with that, but I do love the idea of any tree, anywhere that the sticks would afford me.

REALISTICALLY, is it actually easy to get there in the dark and be able to get the sticks and stand up without becoming a sweaty mess and clanging around? Just seems like whenever I hang stuff in the summer it takes forever (granted it's not lightweight or advanced tech).  Further, would you guys be comfortable leaving the stand in the tree (I am hunting Irondequoit) with the top stick attached and pulling the bottom three? I feel like once I got the stand in, getting the sticks in and out would be a snap.

Or am I better off making do with the climber this year and just going sticks and saddle for next year?

I know this is a tired often asked question, but I am 29/physically fit and I still hate hanging stands. I then go on forums and guys claim they are whisper quiet and get stands on in minutes. Just seems like a bit of exaggeration. Thoughts?

  5. So I have always hunted the Brockportish area of Monroe County, and I have always hunted properties with multiple wild apple trees.

After having sat and observed these spots for years I have come to wonder if they are really a big draw at all for our deer. It always seems like there are tons of untouched fallen apples and the pics of deer feeding on apples are few and far between.

I’ve come to think it’s one of those “land of plenty” scenarios. We are surrounded by tons of agriculture in our area, so maybe the deer don’t really need or care for wild apples? Especially when there are thousands of acres of soy, corn and commercial apples everywhere?

Seems like they are all about the unique experiences. If there is tons of one thing near you, they would rather have the fun new thing (clover, alfalfa, brassicas).

    What’s your experience?

Not worth it to me.  I am very allergic to that stuff.  I know where all of the patches are growing.  BTW, that resin is going to be there next time as well - there is no season for it.  I would leave the stand and burn the clothes I wore.

I’m gonna clean the stand and wash my stuff after every sit. I’m not very allergic so it’s not the biggest deal to me. Now, am I scratching everywhere? Yes. But will I have that level of contact next time, no, nowhere near it.

I mean, it’s THE tree. I gotta be there

  7. I have this beautiful secluded field corner, surrounded by oak trees and even has a two producing apple trees on the edge. It is a perfect transition zone out of heavy cover and before hardwoods. Most of the field is CRP and just one little 1/8 acre corner is mowed down for that perfect dusk shot.

So how do I get a stand up? Ah! There is the perfect oak! About half way up into setting the sticks, I notice the tree is wrapped in posion ivy. It's ok, I have gloves and pants and long sleeves, I will be fine. I get the stand set and my god, it is perfect. I am going to shoot a giant here.

Welp, 6 days later and I am head to toe poison ivy rash. It's like I could use a skin transplant right now. I look like two face from batman. I can't believe I thought that was a good idea. I have invested stock in calamine lotion.

But if I kill that giant, this will all be worth it........ Maybe.

    Ever done anything like this?

  8. Been at this a while but I had a tough go of it this weekend with only a few mature Kings to show for it. Wires were dead silent and the riggers took all the fish. With that said, I know I could have done better. (Lake flip had some effect).

So so as a general rule, what is your preferred down speed and distance from the ball? Just wanna make sure my basics are covered.

I like 40 from the ball for the low rod and about 2.3-2.4.

Here is a pic with my buddy after fighting his first ever mature king!

  9. Up for sale is my mint Kingpin Sovereign and all it’s original packaging and paperwork. It is in amazing shape for how much I fished it and has barely any signs of being used. Spins mint. It is paired with a custom wrapped RV9 rod that has upgraded guides. This is truly an amazing combo to help you get on the salmon and steelhead this fall!!

  10. My father recently acquired some land outside of Brockport, and we are back into the swing of private land hunting. After 4 years of scratching, clawing and begging to hunt "marginal" deer properties, it sure is nice to be back in my own spot with this guy poking around.

As an aside, all of the neighbors have been acting like total crazy people. Walking, riding all over the land and treating us like we killed somebody just because we are posting the property and not allowing all the ride through nonsense to happen. Amazing what people have to say when they are the one spending the money or paying the taxes.......

  11. Quick Question for the more seasoned bass guys out there. What do you do to find fish in the deep summer? It seems like I CANNOT find a deep weed edge in our lakes (think Sodus or Conesus). All I find when I look for the deep edge is grass that comes up to about 5 ft down in 12 ft of water. This is where I see most guys flipping or dropshotting. The real deep break is around 17 ft and it just desolate beyond that break. Seems like I never catch anything when I fish that hard break.

So here I am stuck. It seems like most guys are just flipping to seemingly endless stretches of weeds with no real holes, breaks or edges. Do they just do that long enough to run into a couple of fish? It's been all I can do to grind out a 4-5 fish day lately. Granted the bites are big, but its not worth the drive or the gas for 4 bass.

So what do you look for in the dog days of summer? Do you just poke around in productive foot of water and flip randomly? Or do you look for something more defined.

Thank you in advance for any tidbits you might offer. And yes I have advanced electronics and have been bass fishing my whole life. Just seems like late July - August in these weedbowl lakes of ours defeats me.
