  1. I replaced the standard roller tip on a blue diamond last year with the Torpedo swivel roller tip, & it works great. No problems whatsoever. It swivels 180*, & it wasn't that much more than a twilli.(less than $20) & easy to change over. I'm glad I made the switch.
  2. There is also a line of fat between the head & dorsal fin on the top of it's back, which is white, & has a noticeable " fishy "smell which is very strong compared to the rest of the fish. If your cooking the whole fish wrapped in tin foil, I remove this section, & it makes a world of difference tasre wise. It's very simple. I make a 1/2 cut from the head to the dorsal, & make a V cut down to the backbone, & remove it. It's a white color, & the smell is very strong. Definitely makes a big difference. Very simple, & only takes a few seconds. Even when you fillet a fish, you can see this white fat, & just a simple trim gets the job done.
  3. If anyone is going to the Spring Fishing show this weekend in TO, drop by the Bass Magnet booth. Mike Nabuisi has been making great plastic baits for bass for many years, & has been making large, custom musky baits for a couple of years now. Although I'm not into muskies, these baits have proven to be dynamite up here in Ont. I was in his shop yesterday, & these baits are very impressive, great colors. I don't believe that these baits are yet included on his web site, but should be after the shows are over.
  4. Hoddie, they are fishing the Ganny this week from the pier & in the river for staging Kings, & having success. Fished Wed. off Port Hope, went 3 for 8, & never ventured past 60 FOW, which is less than 1/2 mile from shore. Saw 500-1000 Kings porpousing, the screen always had several hooks on it, & even the boys on the pier had fish, using either row or casting small glo spoons. This weekend the river will be full of shore fisherman. If you think it's fun catching pike or muskys, try a 30# king. Awesome!! Just make sure your reel has good line capacity, & you have a strong arm. Both will be necessary. These fish move into the mouth of the river at night, then move back out after daylight. This will continue until the next rain, then it' up the river to spawn. We kept a couple for the smoker, with one being a hen. The eggs were huge & although not loose, not far from it. It's anal was very enlarged, so it's close to spawning. The Ganny is the earliest run that I know, & they're all natural, as the Ganny has not been stocked with Kings for 25 years. It's a blast at this time of year, & well worth the effort.
  5. Wicklow is inbetween Grafton & Colborne, in the middle of nowhere. Take the #401 to grafton exit( about 7 miles east of Cobourg). Go south about 1 mile to Hwy # 2. Turn east, go about 3 miles to Wicklow Beach Rd., turn right, & follow south about 2 miles. It's a modern launch, lots of parking right there, not busy, & only 1 1/2 miles out to 100FOW. Shelter Valley creek flows into the Lake close to Chub Point( the point you see from the launch to the west ). It's a great Steelie creek & also has a good run of Cohos & Kings each fall. If you go to the east about 4 miles, you'll see the dock at Lakeport, used for lake freighters for the limestone quarry. There is some awesome structure out about 3-4 miles, which we used to fish a lot when fishing out of Brighton. It's about a 15 mile run from there. Normally great fishing there in late July/ early Aug. This is a good launch in the middle of nowhere. Well protected & a good place to fish, especially if a storm comes in, as you're not far away to run in. And there have been many derby fish caught here. And as a bonus, it's FREE launching, with portable bathrooms.Hope this will give you some insite.
  6. The Hi Ho also was used at the launch in Port Hope, so there should be no problem launching now. However, I'd check with Ed at the tackle store or restaurant as you must keep to East side when entering the lake, as opposed to the west side last year & many years past. Both Cobourg & Wicklow are fine. Hope this helps.
  7. Most of the new glow paint or powder contains strontium alluminate, which is activated by UV light. The glow absorbs the UV light, then slowly remits it over time. The best source of UV light comes from the sun( 5-10 min.). We are fishing long before the sun is up & use a 12 volt portable " black light ", which takes about 15 min. to get a full charge, which lasts for hours. Next best is a strong halligen light ( 10 million candle power ), which takes about 20 min. for a full charge. Some of the boys make a glow box, with one light on the bottom, and another attached to the underside of the lid, which is what we use. Simply put your baits in the box prior to leaving the dock, and when you arrive at your destination, your ready to go. The lights we use are a double bullbed, called a twin 10. I also have a twin 6 (6 in.), which is great & fits easily into your tackle bag. These were purchased in the autimotive section at Canadian Tire, for $25- $30. Hope this helps.
  8. We run both the 8 in. & 10 in. spinnies. We use 10 in. on the riggers, 8 in. for dipsys. This setup works extremely well on the north shore. Normally, we run a 72 in., 3 fly rig together with an MCRocket(art. herring strip). Due to the drag from the 3 fly & rocket, a lot of flashers won't rotate, but act more like a dodger. The spin doctors always rotate at all speeds
  9. On the north shore, Spin Doctors are the most popular by far. We use a 10 in. off the riggers, 8 in. for dipsys. We use MCRockets, an artificial, glow in the dark, 100% tuneable herring strip with a 3 fly rig. Due to the drag of the setup, some flashers will not rotate, but act more like a dodger. The spin doctors always rotate as you can see in the video section of mcrocket.com If they work that well on the north shore, they should work equally as well on the south shore
  10. I fish the north shore of L. Ont. out of Wellington. For years, we've used herring strips & anchovies, which was my fav. as you can better tune the bait for you desired speed. With herring strips, tuning is more difficult as the only adjustment is the fin. With anchovies, your roll is controlled by the amount of bend you put on the anchovy, as your hook is inserted just behind the dorsal fin, & the more you pull on your line in front of the teaser head, the more arc you put on the anchovy, the tighter the roll. We use Ryes Davis anchovy heads, which do not have a "fin", allowing you to "tune it" better. As for artificial herring, I've never used baitrix, but the most popular bait used from our home port is the MCRocket, a glow-in-the -dark, 100% tuneable, artificial herring strip. More salmon were caught last year from our home port on MCRockets than all other baits combined. No B.S. They glow for hours & you can "tune" them for what ever speed you choose. The action is unbelieveable!! They're very durable( 20+ salmon on one rocket is common) & no stink, which means less ankle biters. On July 17 last year, we went 18 for 35, all between 20-26 lbs., in 5 1/2 hrs., using only 2 rods as there were only 2 of us on board. We started with 3 rods, but within 5 min. we had a triple. Just like a Chinese fire drill! Boated all three but decided it was too much work & just ran two the rest of the trip. We had 3 doubles & never went more than 10 min. without a fish. Certainly a trip we'll never forget!! Our speed was 1.8-2.2 mph. You can see some underwater video @ mcrocket.com A picture is worth a 1000 words!!
  11. Have you ever tried an MCRocket? They are 100% tuneable, glow for hours, are unbelievably durable but more importantly, they're deadly. On July 17, 2009, we went 18 for 35, on 2 rods in 5 1/2 hours. Most were 20+ lbs. All on the same 2 rockets- a #1 reg. & a #24 mag. You can get a better look @ mcrocket.com
  12. I fish the north shore of L. Ont. out of Wellington. We run a lot of Rockets & have found that the pink Smelly Jelly paste is dynamite. I've tried both the herring(blue) & the anchovy(green) with little success. The pink is called " special mixture, salt & glitter". It lasts for hours!! Last year I tried mixing herring oil with the plastic just before pouring. Smelled great. Never caught a fish on it. Put on a rocket with no scent & started to catch fish. I tried the rocket which was impregnated with herring oil several times with the same result- notta. As soon as I changed to a no scent rocket, I started catching fish. Yet , the pink smelly jelly works wonders. Go figure!!
