  2. To sum it up - I feel like I just caught a unicorn. I have lived on Irondequoit Bay since 2006 and I have heard people telling stories of browns in the bay...but I'm going to be honest I thought they were the things of legend that we fisherman are known to tell stories of (insert lie.). I KNOW they are in the creek - but the idea of pulling one from shore seemed IMPOSSIBLE. Too much water and why would they be near me. It was like casting to a bathtub. I have been all over today for our opening day of trout season. I thought about the Powder Mill derby but it was packed and the water was milky chocolate brown. I drove to Webster (boat isn't in yet) and hit the pier - but it was all chocolate milk brown. I was not to be stopped so I went to the Irondequoit Pier and threw things in the water for three hours without a single hit, strike - look - sniff- nibble...nada. As I left a gentleman told me he had a brown he caught - and said the bay was good for them right now (YEAH RIGHT! I thought.). My wife was at the gym so I thought I would screw around on the docks and see if I could catch any perch. I brought my trout rig too...but just for something to do. My wife even told me that we fisherman were known fabricators as she went to the gym and I was heading home for the Dock and the guy who "caught the brown" at the pier was fibbing...she even laughed! I had to admit...I was on her side. I believe in miracles now. This is probably my most unanticipated and most interesting catch I have had. This was a tank too! I'm still in shock. I was in Key West a week ago and hooked into a nurse shark and a 250-300 pound hammerhead - which was awesome and I have the bruises to prove it! - but this was even more amazing. I feel like I just saw Big Foot! I apologize to all those who have told me otherwise in the past...you were right- I was wrong. I'm a proud believer in the trout of Irondequoit Bay now. This is a happy day and that is NO April Fool! Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  3. No power trim or tilt on kicker. Honda 9.9 long shaft 4 stroke.
  4. Kicker Bracket I have a new (to me) boat and I am looking to attach a 9.9 4stroke Honda Kicker to the back of it. I'm looking for recommendations for kicker brackets, including electronic ones people know of. Any suggestions?

  6. So the boat I'm getting is new to me but is an older boat that currently has never spent more than a few hours in the water at any one time. There was one prior owner who was a machinist who took the boat to Keuka lake usually, dropped it in, took it back out and then washed and waxed the bottom a few times in a pole barn where the boat was always kept. Needless to say, the bottom of the boat is bright white and no issues. I live on the lovely brown waters of Irondequoit Bay and dock the boat here. My prior boat had a soft paint on it that was a mess every two years to repaint and I was a DIY first timer and i did a...."Ok" job at best. Where I live is a boating community - most people seem to NOT bottom paint but then everyone gets nervous talking about it and it is causing me to lose sleep. HA! Do I paint or don't I? I would like to put the boat in ASAP and use it the year. Having it painted now is NOT popular in my mind, but I want to protect what I bought too and not cause a bigger problem later. Do most people paint the hull? If yes, why - if no, why not? And if painting is so important - why do manufacturers NOT paint the bottom when they sell the boat? Thanks for the input!
  7. I'm on Irondequoit Bay. I'm getting a new (to me) boat and need to add a kicker mount to the boat along with an autopilot. I'm looking to have this done by a shop locally. Can anyone make any recommendations?
  8. Bay fishing picked up when I bought a Kayak! LOL! I picked up a great Jackson Kilroy and found that a Gulp minnow on a black jig head with a slight wind is a great way to "troll" the bay. Sheepshead, bass and associated panfish love that sucker. As for the Lake - we have had a few good days but those were a ways back. I'm planning to log a lot of time out there this weekend, but I'm not hearing positive reports from the guys I know living here on the Bay. Many "slow" reports. I also haven't been having a lot of success the last two nights, with only a few rockbass to show for my kayak floating adventures. A walleye would be nice...and some pike... Weather permitting though this weekend I will seek out some silver action on the lake. How are things going for you?
  9. Do you troll the bay for the sheep? I catch them on our docks pretty regularly - they seem to love spinner baits. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  10. Well after a bad year last year and a VERY slow start to this year, success was finally found by actually NOT following the pack out there today and pounding the water we found fish in over an over and over. As my first mate - a "seasoned" Seneca lake guy likes to say, "don't leave fish to find fish" applied today. While the crowd in front of the bay seemed to slip out deeper when we arrived around 7:30 we took an early Laker hit on a customized black spoon with a neon green ladder backing sticker attached (a spoon from yester-year that found a new start today) on a leadcore out 6 colors. That rod and spoon took four more hits during the day and lead the way for us. After that first hit at around 100 fow we followed out to 120 as the crowd was going but decided to double back inside. We created a nice circular pattern for the rest of the day as we had the fish trapped in their wagons it seemed. We went round and round between 90 fow and 110 fow right in front of the bay. A blood bath then unfolded! All of our fish were contained in essentially the same area as we plotted each one with a photo on the iPhone navionics map. We matched the style of spoon on the leadcore and ran anything black and green all down between 30-40 ft. We hit an even split of boated lakers and steelhead for a total of 6 on the boat - with one steelie jumping free (the 4th but since no blood on the boat it doesn't count) right next to the boat. We took three other hits with nobody home. Leadcore was by far the most productive but we took hits on a rigger and dipsy setup as well. Here are four of the fish we got...I know that nobody will believe it but our biggest two went un photographed due to my first mate having a problem running the iPhone camera. With some training we got the last 4. Thank you all for the tips and I will see you out there. Going 6 for 9 from 7:30 until 12 made up for many of the boring slow boat rides we've been having. 11. So - Another weekend (a LONG weekend) spent on the water with very little success. Saturday I trolled the mudline with everyone else. We marked bait all day long and moved the rod 2x - once nobody was home and the second time a small silver. Eventually the lake chop got too much for the boat and we had to run into the bay. We ran a downrigger with a variety of spoons - 2 sticks for awhile off boards - switched those out for some leadcore with spoons as the bait all seemed to be down around 20 ft. and the larger fish just below that. Virtually nothing. The move to the Bay seemed like it would be productive as we found large schools of fish and decided to vertically jig with some gulp minnows. We marked a LOT of fish - we caught nothing. Two hits - no hookups. That was from 7am until 2:30pm. Sunday I went for a solo trip in the Bay. Again - I found a LOT of marks. Again - I tried the gulp minnows - I tried jigs - I tried spinners - I tried rubber worms and raps. Nothing. Not even a hit. I was so sick of hearing the fish alarm go off - I wanted to scream. On the water from 7-1:00. Monday - I had been on the water so much I was only able to sneak out of the house to fish around the docks. small jigs tipped with a gulp maggot usually is killer on panfish. Nothing. I know this is called fishing...but I believe I have become cursed. One of these days I'm going to get that "BIG" day with a number of fish, but this past weekend was not it. Still, I appreciate all of the tips and advice. I will see you all out there!
  12. Thanks to everyone for their advice and help! I'm hoping to be able to put some of it to good use on the next trip out. I'll keep you all posted.
  13. The smile was supposed to be EIGHT years...not a smiley face....that makes no sense...LOL!
  14. I have lived on the bay and fished it and the lake now for many years (. I typically have a great deal of success in the bay itself as a warm water fishery but have been intrigued by the idea of trout being caught in the bay. I can say that someone on my boat checked that box off by jigging for walleye (which we can never find) and coming up with a steelie. While that was a great bonus this spring, other than that this year has started terribly. Outside of some white bass and rock bass, I have had no luck either in the bay or in the lake. Saturday 5/17 was spent in the bay looking for elusive walleye (starting to wonder if they are like Nessie) and pike (They may as well be Champie from Lake Champlain). Afternoon until early night was spent moving around the bay until finally trolling home in the dark marking fish and still not moving a rod for anything but white bass. Spoons...rapalas....worms (live/fake)....spinners....kitchen sinks...nothing. Sunday 5/18 was spent on the water morning to dinner with a short break. Targeted trout and salmon in the lake heading east out of the IBay and sticking to the recommendations I saw as well as the boats - 20fow - 50fow - mixture of spoons & sticks (firetiger, purples, black, white, gold) were dragged through the muddy water trying to avoid the fallout from the Genny, trolling from the IBay to the Webster pier and back with only 1 small brown trout to show for it. Fished the lake from 9-until 2:30 like that. Then spent 4:00-6:00 again in the Bay...nothing. Not one fish, though MANY on the finder (which is frustrating). This terrible performance is in-line with the last three trips I've taken, all with the same result. Either the lake fishing turned into a slow choppy boat ride without moving a rod or the bay fishing was an occasional perch, rock bass or white bass, but even those have been so sporadic as not to make it worth speaking of really. This was even while throwing worms as live meat! If you cannot catch fish on worms in the Bay, you know you have a problem. Therefore - I'm asking for some help. Public post, private message, send a courier pigeon or a smoke signal. What is going on out there that I'm missing? I know this is fishing and not catching - but this is crazy. My only good fish to speak of was a big sheepshead off the docks of my boat launch. HELP is appreciated. For the Lake - for the bay - for whatever...I need to catch SOMETHING...not just a cold or a weird sunburn...though that was funny. Thanks
  15. Congratulations! What a Fish!!!!! Glad to see that the boats from IBay are represented on the board!
  16. Having grown up near Oneida Lake fishing for walleye from shore, I'm not sure what the options are on Erie. I am heading out there this weekend to spend some time with the girlfriend's family, but I may have a chance to run out to Erie and get a line wet for a little bit. Though I live on Lake Ontario now, I have never even seen Lake Erie and know nothing really about it. Hopefully someone can give me a tip (including - don't waste your time). On Oneida - I would head to the point across from the channel near Sylvan Beach - wade out and throw worms into the boat channel (about 16-20 ft deep) with a few split shot about a foot up from the hook and drag the whole thing across the bottom at a snails pace (This also works in Irondequoit Bay for walleye I have found as well). VERY effective in the heat of the summer even on sunny days (both Oneida and Irondequoit Bay...though in the Bay I keep catching little 8-10 inch guys). What are my options (if any) on Erie right now? I'm actually going to Orchard Park, and apparently the Lake is only 5 -10 minutes from their house, so it isn't EXACTLY Buffalo but near there. Anyone familiar with the area with tips I would LOVE to hear from. I'm also willing to wade out in to some Lake Erie water if the need exists (waders if I need them - shorts if I won't freeze). THANKS!

Boat Depth: 100-170 Lure Depth: 80Ft ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS ==================== I decided to take a solo trip out after the morning storms thinking the predicted afternoon thunderstorms were too far south. Left the dock - gassed up - out I went to have lines in the water around 1:30. Looking south I could see the rain coming and I was hoping it would stay far enough south as not to be an issue. I started in 100 fow and headed NW from IBay, thinking that may help me stay "above" the weather. LUCKILY I did! As the storm moved in from the south I watched first the power station, then Rochester, then Irondequoit disappear in a fog of rain. I ran JUST north of the rain drops, with only a tiny amont falling on me as I continued on the NW troll from the IBay towards the Genny and the storm moved along the shore, and out on the lake, heading east. I ran pretty much 135-142 fow the entire way from IBay to the Genny, but I wasn't thinking as much about the fishing as I was the storm (I was wondering if I had made such a great decision as I stood in the sunshine only an hour earlier). Once the storm clearly moved past I was kicking myself for not having been a bit deeper as all my recent hits came out past 150. Turning the boat north I quickly hit 150 and as I inched out to 155 BAM - My left side dipsey pulling the green reflective spin doctor with the blue dolphin fly out 210 on a 3 setting fired! I got back to the rod, pulled it from the holder and suddenly the center pole (42 sec spin doctor with 42 sec fly down 80 ft using Mag dipsey on 2 setting) starts to bang around as well. Concerned after having a recent salmon decide to tangle some lines, I thought it was a horror show but realized the lines were way too far apart for 1 fish to be in two lines again - it was my first double on my boat...and I was alone! The first fish, in my hands now (via the pole), took off and pulled the line from 210 to 310 pretty rapidly. I fought him for quite awhile as it was REALLY tugging and I kept monitoring the drag on the other pole that kept banging around in the holder. I fought the main fish, giving and taking line, until he was about 30 ft in back of the boat. I could see it was a good fish, but I was tiring (not afraid to admit it either, he was STRONG!) and realizing I still had another fish to get in. I probably added a bit too much drag and tried to horse it in the rest of the way and a big series of head shakes later, he was gone. I wasn't as upset as normal since I still had the other fish, which in all the wait had gone from 175 ft to about 250. After dragging him back to the boat I could see he was a decent 10 pound fish and I had to use my WAY too short net to get him in the boat. After 5 attempts, success was finally achieved and I dropped him in the boat thrashing all the while. I was concerned about how much time he was dragged along so I got him unhooked and in the water to see if he could be revived (w/o taking a photo...wish I had). After a few seconds he broke free, spun over and around once and slowly swam away. I tried to reset the lines and go again, but as I was doing so the waves from the passing storm really pushed me around and I ended up with my lines all tangled. After some time swearing and untangling and fighting the boat and the waves - I looked north saw another storm heading my way and decided to call it. I had had enough excitement for an afternoon and did not want to further risk getting wet. Besides, I'm now typing this having a frozen cocktail and eating shrimp! Stay-cations are GREAT when you live on Lake O! Good Luck out there!
  18. Do you by chance have the yellow...I think its a seaswirl and forgive me if I'm wrong...that came in around 9 and was kind enough to share pretty much the same info with a solo headed out in a white boat with blue top? If so - thanks for the info. Slowed down after you left - but I'm out here now and it is picking up! [ Post made via iPhone ]
  19. Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name: 2-FAR-2-ROW ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s): 5/25-5/26/-5/28 Time on Water: 9 Hours Total Weather/Temp: Fri - Calm water/windy - Saturday - glass - Memorial - Slight Chop Wind Speed/Direction: Waves: Surface Temp: Location: North of IBay LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 5 Total Boated: 3 Species Breakdown: 2 Lakers - 1 Coho Hot Lure: Spin Doctor - Blue Dolphin Fly Trolling Speed: 2.5-2.9 Down Speed: Boat Depth: 70-210 Lure Depth: 35-80-15 ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS ==================== I got a few trips out this weekend with some friends who had never been fishing on Lake O. Unfotunately on Friday night I marked the most fish (stayed between 60-80 FOW) and got SKUNKED! I even brought my buddy into the IBay back to the docks where I never get skunked and STILL couldn't get a hit. Sorry John! We fished from 5-9:30 and got NOTHING! On Saturday I was up and out fairly early (7:00 am) with a friend and my trusty first mate! Took quite awhile, but we FINALLY got a Laker to hit over 150 FOW - 30 feet down on leadcore with a NK 28 Goby pattern spoon. We went another 30 minutes and got a BIG hit - ended up being a 18Lb Laker - over 190 FOW down 90 (green spin doctor - blue dolphin Fly) - that tired out my first timer buddy's forearm! Only a few hours on the water - 2 fish...not too bad. Sunday I decided to give the Lake a rest since my iPhone app said the waves would be a bit more than I could talk my crew into. I shot a 41 for 9 holes at Durand instead - not bad for the 2nd round of the year that started with a double bogey! Monday morning I was back at it with a new crew member, my girlfriend and my trusty first mate! 4 total on the boat (2 women) made the conversation "change" quite a bit from normal. Nevertheless, while we took a Looooong slow boat ride from 7-12 - we didn't get skunked as a tasty coho decided he liked a blue dolphin fly behind a white with green dots spin doctor off a dipsey down 35 ft over 190 FOW. Overall - it was a good weekend as we got some fish and didn't just take the skunk around. It is GREAT to get first timers on some fish and they REALLY enjoyed it! The credit goes to my First Mate and the members of LOU that are willing to share their knowledge. This site is FANTASTIC! Back to work tomorrow - I hope there are more IBAY reports! (Sunrise is from a few days ago...still nice though! AMAZING VIEWS on the lake!)

I don't want to think about how many hours I've spent fishing for this sucker! My Fishing Buddy and I got out - got set up heading east out of the Bay and finally got a hit! The waves eventually turned my focus to my couch - but overall we are just proud to have caught SOMETHING! Hopefully this is #1 of MANY! The Skunk is OUT of the boat! Let's go Fishing!
  21. I bought two Bert's pre-drilled gimbal mounts last year for downriggers - but I'm thinking I would like to use one of them to hold more poles using the track system and pole mounts, and maybe even put a track on the second one so I can use the Bert's swivel base for the downrigger (it apparently only fits in a track system). I see Bert's offers a gimbal with a track pre-attaached, but I don't want to have to buy that since I already have the two other gimbals (and these things aren't cheap). Can anyone tell me if they have mounted track systems to the pre-drilled gimbal mounts? Is this possible? Is there another option? Thanks in advance.
  22. I was at Summerville from about 9:00 - 2:30. I was in about 100 yards or so from the step. Thanks for the tip about fishing in the Bay for trout and salmon. I have fished that bay for 5 years and I have never seen a single trout or salmon in there. I never thought about searching them out until I started looking at this site and started to think about the fish going up the creek. Clearly they travel through the Bay, but I can't imagine catching one in there. Frankly until this year I had never caught a walleye in there either. Bass and Pike - LOTS of them. Time to plan a trip to hit the pier again!
  23. I live in Bay Village - the North docks we have are over some pretty deep water for the Bay. If they are coming up the west, any thoughts on the prospects of hooking into something off that area? I gave it a shot last night for two hours, just caught some bass and crappie. I would be THRILLED to catch a trout, salmon or walleye over there though. Anyone have any thoughts? If not, I'm heading back to Summerville as I hooked into my first King there last Friday. AMAZING!!! What a BLAST!!!!!
  24. Where exactly in the bay are you seeing them? I live on the bay. Hauling a salmon out of the bay right now would be a blast! [ Post made via iPhone ]
