  1. I just wanted to thank the good people that organized this tournament. It was my best day Muskie Fishing yet. I know that COVID presented some challenges and prevented us from getting together after grinding all day. Big Congrats to the guys that put that 50 in the boat. She was a beauty. We didn’t catch any giants but these are the 4 we were able to bring in the boat.
  2. Quick answer....no!! Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  3. Hey all, went out yesterday 7/19 for a few hours in the morning out of wrights. Started out slow, until we found the wolf pack. Ended the day 8/10. 7 nooks and a laker. We were too deep early in the morning setting up in 200 fow and trolling out o 300/330. turned back around and got into 150 -210 fow and started getting better marks. ff were the way to go for us. fish were a little deeper too. dropped a rigger down to 120 and 2 min later had our first nook. As we were fighting that fish dropped the opposite side rigger to 115 and, bang, another nook. OK here we go fish were holding in about 110-120 fow over 180-200 fow. after we found em everything was going, took one on a 600 copper, dipsys fired a couple times, but mostly a rigger bite. Sorry no pics really, most of the fish were cookie cutter high teens/twenty pounders. all and all a good day, we only had one fish fire on a meat rig but heard from another boat they couldnt keep fish off of the meat. Its so much fun having the Kings back. Anyway I hope this report helps. Tight lines everyone.
  4. That's soooo weird there hasn't been a report for O town in a while. Good luck in the Pro Am everyone!!! Sharp hooks, and tight lines!!! Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  5. John hammered it out of the park!!! Eloquently done John. If you've read John's post and still don't think you should tip the Mate, your either crazy or cheap, and neither of those are endearing qualities!!! Tight lines everybody, good luck out on the water!!!!
  6. Let me preface this post by saying I fish lake O on my own boat and don't operate a charter business, however I am accutely aware of the costs involved in Chartering on Lake O. This is a rediculous topic. When you go out to eat you tip the waiter or waitress based upon service, if you feel you received good service, you provide a good tip. To the construction company owner, jobsite, GET A CLUE DUDE, If you dont think $800 is a good deal for a full day of fishing on Lake Ontario then go out and do the following: Go buy a $20,000 boat, spend another $10,000 - $15,000 to get it set up to fish Lake O, Drop $2-300 a trip on gas, Do not ever compare your fuel costs with that of a charter captain!, There is some science involved, moving a vehicle through the water and moving a vehicle around on land are 2 very different things and its not close. pay the $1,000 to to keep your boat at the marina, dont forget about upkeep of all of the equipment and the vessel itself. The costs associated with getting and maintaining a coastguard certification. And they do all of this to provide you, jobsite, with an opportunity to go out and potentially catch the fish of your lifetime, so do them all a favor take your 3 buddies pony up the $200 a piece, and if your captain has a mate tip that person as well. Or, jobsite, are you telling me that you cant afford $225 for a day of trophy fishing on one of the best inland bodies of water in our country. That is a you problem!!!! From an income standpoint, many of these Captains do this as a labor of love, they don't make a ton of money. Even though I don't take a charter often maybe once a year to try and learn new things, I don't feel anyone should complain about the cost, I think it is a fantastic value. Bottom Line is cheapskates are cheapskates! That will never change, not today, not tomorrow, not next week. To the captians that I know thank you for what you do, you are often the leaders in the conservation of our great lakes, and you are too often criticized. And Jobsite, there is no rebuttal, don't try you will only look more foolish!!
  7. We went out Saturday morning and gave the boats a shakedown cruise. Everything went well. Our boat went 14/16. With 12 brownies and 2 steelies. One Steelie just came out of the creek and tipped the scale at about 15 pounds. Not much size on the browns though. Our biggest was 8 pounds or so. Lots and lots of footballs. We were out between catfish and otter creeks. Fished in 8-22 foot water the larger fish came in a little in the deeper water. Gin clear everywhere with the South wind for a few days It would of been great to find some color. The other boat left the launch and head east. They went 20/22 again mostly browns, a couple small steelies. WE had a big fish calcutta challenge for lunch and thanks to the big steelie we ate well!!! thanks for lunch boys!!! Quality over quantity boys Your typical thunderstick and smithwick spread browns and copper colored early, silver & blue and silver and black in the afternoon.
  8. Went up to Mexico bay state launch yesterday. It was wide open. A bit rough but wide open. There was an unbelievable color break about 100 yards off shore. We'll be heading up on Saturday for A shakedown cruise. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  9. Hey Mark, so you're heading to Pulaski on the 4th. I would first tell you that's a hell of a good place to put your boat in that time of year. Their have been reports of some Salmon already starting to run up the River but those would be considered early runs. Labor Day weekend tends to be one of the last weekends we put in to fish the lake as the whitetail blood starts flowing. You should have no problem finding Schools of staging Salmon right out front. Hopefully there will be some Kings that are still feeding then. Their certainly will be some Cohos out there as well. Cohos tend to run just after the Kings do. We have found, as probably many will attest to, that trolling flasher flies and spoons will be your best bet. You will be able to pull plugs as well since a lot of the fish will be in shallower water. I hope that you get into a few. They are tons of fun to catch and fight like crazy. I would recommend coming a bit earlier next year. The month of August is what I consider to be Prime Time out on the Lake. Catching a spry Salmon that is still feeding its enormous gut is unlike any other freshwater fishing thrill. I have caught big Pike, walleye, bass, you name it; but there is nothing like a 30 pound chunk of pure muscle deciding that it wants to run 300 feet off you reel instantly. Best of Luck!!
  10. Im fishing the LSR shootout this weekend and trying to figure out when the Fair Haven Challenge is scheduled. Not having much luck tracking that down. Is it weekend of 17th? if anyone knows please lemme know. I only have about 6 weddings to dodge during the month of August so any help would be appreciated.
  11. Nice job on getting a first timer out there. I'm afraid though that the Coho eluded you that 2nd fish is a steelie for sure. Definitely does not take away from your day. I personally love fighting Steelies.
  12. I caught 5 on Sunday trolling south end of Owasco Lake. We were trolling stick baits flatlined and two colors of leadcore. Trolled from 6 fow to 70 fow. Picked up 1 laker (7lbs.) 5 Northerns biggest was probably 33".Its been too windy for us to fish Mexico Bay where we like to pick browns, so we went to Owasco hoping for some Browns/Walleyes. Got neither of those but it beat yard work. We were only out about 4 hrs. we were a little disappointed because we didn't catch what we were looking for but Northerns are fun to catch they fight like the dickens. Everyone of those Northerns destroyed the stick baits. It was amazing that they didn't break off they had the entire lure in their beaks, all nine points of all three treble hooks. It made me look forward to the annual Canada fishing excursion.
  13. So, after a very pedestrian finish in a stream fishing derby Saturday I was craving a little Lake O action on Sunday. The boys and I got out there about 7:30, and......."not so much". Slowwww Day!!!! The last 3 trips had been killer with lots of nice browns, some salmon action last weekend, a walleye, and a few lakers taken but Sunday......."not so much". we set up in front of Catfish. A lot of boats out there and they were scattered so I knew that wasn't a good sign. No Colored water anywhere after fishing in chocolate milk last weekend. That's an offshore wind for you. No marks on the HDS so picked up and motored to Salmon River mouth, finally found some colored water just north of where Salmon dumps in. 1 rod fired and we picked up a small fat brown. We heaved him back in the lake and continued for about 2 more hours. Nothing, so I guess it was a beautiful day but as far as the fishing....Not So Much. That's all for now
  14. It was 12lb leader. It looked as though it was cut clean.
  15. Yeah had him right up to about 6 feet from boat and then he decided he wanted to be 106 feet from the boat...I'm afraid that run is what did in the leader.
  16. Got launched at Mexico Point about 7. It was still a little windy but we went after it anyhow. Headed West towards Catfish only running a 4 rod spread with the Lake being so turned up it was nearly impossible to get our planers out. Got about 1/2 way to Catfish and I could see one of our guys starting to turn green. It wasn't much longer and...well you know how this goes. Anyway we picked up our lines and got him back to the truck he said he needed to take a nap for a little while. OK so this puts us at about 9:30 were headed back towards Mexico not a fish in the boat. By this time the lake has laid down enough for us to get our boards out. So we don't get 3 rods out and bang. Nice Brown!!! 8-9 pounder. Keep setting rods. Boom 2 more....3 fish in an hour here we go getting better. Boom Phone call from guy back at truck OK. Guy: how they biting Me: Sweet man were 3/3 getting into em. Guy: I'm feeling a little better, Can you pick me back up? Me: Yeah, sure we're on our way. So picked all our spread up motored up and went back to launch...picked up buddy. Gold Sticks on planers picked up first 3 fish. So we went back out to Catfish laid out as much gold as possible. 8 gold sticks and spoons. 1 green stick and 1 silver smithwick with the black bars down the side. No fish trolled for 40 min. or so and nothing pulled in the lead core was going to change lures, BOOM Planer rod fires. another nice Brown. This time Silver Smithy. OK put another silver smithy on leadcore. 3 min later doubles on both silver sticks in the water. Wholesale lure change on the spread. Game On!!! Fished another 3 hours in front of catfish in 12-15 FOW anything silver was $$$$. Finished the day 15/21. Had some crazy drops including one that shocked the hell outta me. Remember that Smithy with the black stripes...That baby exploded of the board and we were locked. Fought fish for about 10 min. We had it right up to the boat once then it ran and ran. And the reason it ran and ran was because it was a King!!! That's right a King and a decent King to boot. On a flatlined Stickbait in 12'ft of water in Mexico Bay during April. Gotta Love that but sadly to say our leader did not withstand the torrent and we lost that baby. Sorry Folks. But the day was great we caught 14 browns biggest about 13 lbs. 1 walleye (which we released as our mouths watered). We'll get our chance for revenge in a couple of weeks on that guy.
  17. It was breezy until about 9 or 9:30 which is why we started late. but the lake knocked right down to pretty much nothing by 10 or shortly there after. 1 footers maybe. I use LOOFS for wind forecast. I am sure most people do to. It was pretty accurate yesterday. If you've never heard of it just google "Loofs" and click the surface wind forecast. It projects out a couple of days and is usually pretty accurate. We only have a small open bow Fishmaster so we have to watch that pretty closely when the arrows are green out of the West, that's about as much as we want to tangle with. It isn't a lot of fun at that speed but Fishable. I believe that is winds from 10-15 knots. But it is helpful.
  18. Fished from 8:30 to 1:30. 12/14. 11 Browns 1 Laker. Fished in the muddy edge of the color break. 15-20 FOW. Anyhting that mimicked a goby with a orange stripe in it. Smithwicks and challengers on boards. Small thundersticks on riggers. Spoons on lead core. No Real Big Sloppy Browns yet. Probably 8# took the title. Did get into an 11# Laker on a flatlined stick off the board. We started off heading west out of Mexico Point launch real slow...turned around got back to the launch and then as we went East rods started to pop.
  19. Hey folks. I'm looking for a little help. I'm from Syracuse, NY. We've had our boat out trolling for the past 3 years. Most of our time and effort is on Lake O and we have been pretty successful at catching Salmon, Browns and Steelies. We only have a 20' Fishmaster, so when Lake O gets a little too blustery we often have to head to one of the finger lakes to get our fishing fix quenched. MY question is can someone please help us figure out what our approach should be to get into some Browns on either Cayuga or Owasco. I have found I am at a loss there. In the big lake especially this time of year we are running our spread through 10-20 FOW and getting bit all day long. Once we get to the finger lakes finding 10-20 FOW is like finding a way to split the atom. Just not that easy. Finger lakes have such sharp drop offs where should we be focusing our time. Also up in Lake O in the shallower water we run mostly Stick baits and spoons. Either Flatlined on the boards or a couple 2 or 3 colors of lead core. Barely use our riggers as we are so shallow. We don't have much issue catching lakers in Cayuga or Owasco. Seems like they are a dime a dozen. I know there are Browns in there I've seen people catch em just wish I knew what we were doing wrong. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks All, Tight Lines and Sharp Hooks!!!
  20. We put in at Wright's landing last Monday. It was a really, really, really windy day. We stayed within the harbor walls. Marked all sorts of wish but couldn't get a rod to fire. although we only had a 3 rod spread going. Did I mention it was windy. I'm sure you can catch fish within the walls. I've done so in the past. Good Luck!!
  21. Giz, We were also out in Mexico Bay on 9/7 evening. We went 6-10 Just 2 people on board so we hit our limit. It is awesome to hear it was your first trip out trolling lake O for Salmon, it is so much fun. We started just last year. Before we got started we took a couple of trips not on a charter but on a buddys boat who had been fishing the lake for a little while. He is a driftboat guide on the River so he knows a lot of people in the fishing circle he most often fishes on his boat with several of his buddies who first mate on some Charter boats. If you can get out with someone who has done it before. and spend a lot of time taking notes and observing you'll be able to run your own spread flawlessly. If you have to, hire a captain and take a charter out and watch what is happening very closely. As far as how far back to run your lures behind the rigger balls it really depends on what you are using for lures. Flasher Flies we generally run 20-30 feet behind the ball (sometimes even shorter). except on our probe rigger we run that behind the ball 40'. If you are dragging spoons as opposed to flasher flies you would probably want a bit longer lead. I would say 50' minimum. We had a hookup on a spoon on 9/7 that was 100' behind the ball. Of course if you have a dozen people answer your question here you will probably get a dozen different answers. Experiment and find out what wrks best for you. On Friday we found tons of fish in about 95 feet of water and we were running our gear between 60 and 80 feet down. we had hookups on everything we ran wire, copper, and riggers. What I have found over the last 2 years is that if you are running ff(flasher flies) all you need is chrome, white or green flashers with some mountain dew mixed in there with a handful of Atommik flies that we have found work the best. Green Crinkle, Mirage, Sweet Pea, Crazy ****, Big Fin, Pro-AM, and any of the hammer flies (green hammer, hammer, and glow hammer) We have caught fish with other colors and patterns but those work the best for us. Good Electronics make a world of difference too. We aadded a Lowrance HDS 5 last year as well as a MOOR Sub Troll 900 and it has made a huge difference. In the Summer months that Moor really helps find the temps. (less important now) Our boat is a 2001 so the electronics that came with the boat were OK (great in 2001) the new stuff with the lake insight and the quality display rock. We fish on a 20' Starcraft Fishmaster so it is not a huge hard top boat like a lot of these guys have but we can still run 4 riggers, 3 dippys, and 2 coppers off of that beast with out too much issue just watch those turns. Also last year I joined ELOTSA Which stands for Eastern Lake Ontario Trout and Salmon Association. (Maybe it's ELOSTA) I cant remember. But they have been helpful also. They meet once a month and usually they have a speaker talk about a particular fishing technique that they use. We have learned a lot there. Started using Torpedos this year based on a talk there, much success too. I hope some of this helps. But enjoy yourself out there don't let a sunking get you frustrated it doesn't happen often. I think only twice to us in 2 years. And if that gets you down just wait Brown season is coming soon and the big lake can produce some rediculous Brown Trout fishing excursions. One day we went 56-67. With a 15lber being the biggest if that doesn't get you jacked up you better check your pulse. Tight Lines
