  1. Nice job Chris, but man, you guys spend all that money up there for 3 days and some guys were not in the derby? That should be a mandatory rule. Good luck this year bud.

Yeah, we definitely miscommunicated there. I'll admit, I never fish the LOC because of the rule. I usually fish when I can and I take a lot of new guys out with me and can't see making them buy a ticket for one day of fishing, so my ticket wouldn't matter anyway. But next year, our entire team will be in the derby.

  2. First, congrats to Tom Allen and Team A-Tom-Mik for the win. Tough fishing for a lot of teams but they got it done when it mattered.

Thursday we fished in 5-6' waves and got beat up all day to land 1 coho on 4 bites. Friday was a little better and we were able to land 3 out 5 coho bites, a steelhead, and 2 nice kings.

    25.03 lb

The morning of the event, we knew it was going to be more tough fishing, so we decided to start at our numbers from Friday morning and try to pick up a few coho just to have fish in the box.

We took two coho bites inside early and quickly lost both fish. We worked our way toward the bar and only took one more hit all day, which failed to connect. We never boxed a fish.

Although it was a struggle, I had a blast. How can you not when fishing three days in a row? We weighed a 25.03# King on Friday to take the $2,000 check for Thursday and Friday's 1k a day. It would be 2nd on LOC board but not everyone on the boat was in the derby. Our box Friday would have cashed a check in the event at 103 pts. I can't wait to fish the pro am next weekend, and I'll be back for the WHI again next year.

  3. My son and his buddies had their morning hunt ruined by a last minute hunter that set up 80 yards away. So they packed up and moved to another spot, my little honey hole across town.

After hearing nothing on their first sit there, they moved to the back corner of a large field, hidden back in the woods. They only had time to get the one camera going after a gobbler responded to their locator calls. A few minutes later, four jakes came right across the corner of the field, running right in to their Avian X decoys. The boys each rolled one, and got the triple!!!

I doubled with my best friend when we were about the same age and it's something that I'll never forget, and I'm sure they will do the same.

  4. Coho?! This past Sunday out of Wilson we went 3 for 8 on coho. They were extremely tough to keep on. My question is how does anyone specifically target coho besides running lines up high. We caught or had coho on from 8 to 100 ft of water. Seemed there was no rhyme or reason were they were. As far as targeting coho what water conditions are you looking for?  Why are they spread out over vast areas?

I think we saw you out there Sunday. I was fishing with Carl on the Dublin Up. We got a couple coho on 3 colors with red dodger/ peanut fly. We were after kings mainly though. Got a few of them too.
I have had success on temp breaks in deeper water right about that time when the lake starts to set up. They usually ride higher in the water column and are schooled up. A four rod spread is key when you find them, that way you can turn on a dime and keep running baits through the school. I remember maybe 3-4 years ago we made 5 or 6 passes through one school and doubled or tripled up every time.

  5. I kill a lot of coyotes because I love hunting them. People that fish Lakers ( I am not one of those people) do it because they enjoy it.
Mange kills more coyotes than hunting does.
I get a kick out of these people who start with "studies show"

I was wondering when you were gonna chime in on the coyotes. Lol.

  6. Did you read my post? Killing coyotes has a small impact on population. The litter increases due to low numbers. You barely put a dent in the overall population statistically. Read up on it. Most certainly taking out a few would clear the area of them but only to have others move in. Coyotes have a crazy breeding pattern. Not many people hunt coyotes to lower numbers much.

I am very educated on the topic of coyotes. I am an avid deer hunter and trap predators in the winter. I am telling you that hunting coyotes WILL reduce their population. If more people hunted them, the population WILL be reduced even more. I know they will adapt, just like any animal when their population is threatened, but I'm not talking about taking it that far. I seek balance. Do you know what happens when coyotes become overpopulated? I think you should read about that before we talk more.

  7. Research suggests that when aggressively controlled, coyotes can increase their reproductive rate by breeding at an earlier age and having larger litters, with a higher survival rate among young. This allows coyote populations to quickly bounce back, even when as much as 70 percent of their numbers are removed.
It is nearly impossible to completely eradicate coyotes from an area. Despite bounties and large-scale efforts to kill coyotes over the last 100 years, coyotes have in fact expanded their range throughout the U.S. and Canada tremendously. One study even found that killing 75 percent of a coyote population every year for 50 years would still not exterminate the population.

We're talking population control, not eradication. Two totally different topics. Hunting coyotes most certainly helps control the population in much of the same ways deer hunters help control the population. It's foolish to believe that it does not

  8. LOL Legacy I think the same applies for drinking beer   I had no idea stating my daughter would love to hold a fish the size of Slammers that he's going to bury would set fire under the azz of so many people, but then again I should of known for the reason I say below. I didn't know that they are one step away from glowing green:lol: I even said I don't voice my opinion because of the bashing I took on crow hunting, that I do the same as Slammin does with the lakers, no I'm not a wagon jumper I bought several hundred $$$ worth of Brian's rigs to hunt lakers just as Skipper stated, keep the kids busy and gives them the incentive to come along with dad again. On that note I'm done. Obey the law and all is good:handshake: PAP

I bought a bunch of gamblers rigs as well. With the looming bait crisis, many friends and myself included have decided to make an effort to keep our boat limits to reduce the population. I'm sure our efforts will only be trumped by the federal stocking next year, but it's worth a shot. I'm not just keeping lakers either, less kings will be released this year by me as well.
Pap, my son has been plucking away at the crows since coyote season ended. He has even cooked up a few breasts, and I have to say, it wasn't too bad. Tasted kind of like a lean, wild steak.

  9. This past Friday, I had one rigger within 2' of the bottom, and the other 5' up. Watching the sonar return of the weights on the screen, I could tell when a laker was on by the reduced return of the weight on the sonar. Happened over and over with none hitting hard enough to release

  10. Wow....5 pages, off topic from the original post about a successful outing, of opinions on a clearly stated law about the killing of a limit of Lake trout. Didn't know there was any law about the disposition of the dead fish. The man was out fishing, wanted to check his boat and caught some fish...legally...
A few good reasons in order of importance for legal killings of lake trout IN LAKE ONTARIO in my estimation, others may vary.
    1. It's a mounting quality, cerimonious adulation
    2. It's a big derby winner...not anymore though.
    3. It makes a great fertilizer, makes quality fruits and legumes.
    4. You can't catch any other fish, kids or someone wants to, and lakers are everywhere.
    5. They make great picture subjects, then after they are released, might die anyway
    6. You like cleaning their sh!t off your boat, akin to bringing cormorants along to do chinese fishing, then the cleaning of fecal material is justified.
    7. Great table fare...from other lakes!

Anybody care to add to the list of positive reasons to LEGALLY kill lake trout? Most of the other opinion on negative reasons have already been listed in the 5 pages...it's all about balance. Even the DEC said so, made the law, wants that limit to be used to monitor and control as with every gamefish.
    Oh by the way Slammin!
Nice day you had, and great success in your shakedown run. Don't let those giant tomatoes become carnivorous. We might have a new fear! [emoji106]

    but it does buy horsepower....
I've never seen a sad person in a boat haulin' A$$...!

Thanks skipper!! I'll have to remember to post pics of the garden in July so all the haters can see the fruits of my labor.

  11. Lake trout have a slow breeding pattern. They breed little to none compared to other species. If pressured to much their numbers can fall dramatically leaving a breeding gap and overall low population to regain over time. I also eat lakers are they bad to eat?

Sent from my SM-G900V using Lake Ontario United mobile app

You can defend the greasers as much as you want. I'm still going to reduce the population as much as I want. They are way overpopulated.

  12. Killing coyotes does not do a thing. The DEC did a study and proved hunting coyotes and killing them has little to no effect on the main population.

Sent from my SM-G900V using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Are you kidding? If more people hunted them, there would be more of an effect. That's common sense. If less people hunt them, they become overpopulated. When coyote are overpopulated, they become deer killers. They are also known to kill most, if not all fox in area when the coyote population is too high.

  13. Funny about your plan to take Lakers every time out.  I have a similar plan, but luckily I have a Korean neighbor that loves fish.  I have a buddy who takes them to Chinese restaurant he frequents and exchanges Lakers for take-out.  Compared to the toxic fish coming out of the ocean around the orient, lakers are clean by comparison.

I give away so many filets each year as well. I mean, a box full of 15-20 lb kings can feed an army. My dad takes the most since he lives in Pittsburgh now and rarely makes it out with me anymore. My grandfather loves baked salmon in rice with butter and lemon slices. Numerous friends and family members are always hounding me for a bag or two. But nobody eats the lakers. I don't blame them, I have tried several times. The meat has a weird texture. I grew up eating all the salmonids out of necessity and perhaps that ruined me. I just don't care for the flavor anymore. My spring walleye trips and ice fishing provides much tastier options. But I had two tomato plants rip the cages right out of the ground last year they got so big. That's worth it to me
