  1. Just throwing this out there.  Has Rochester ever been considered as a place to host this show? It would seem that a more central location (as far as Lake O is concerned) might bring in more participants as well as attendees?  I have 2 young kids who love to fish but in my personal situation it would be a lot to ask of them to ride in the car for 2-3 hours each way.  I am in no way trying to complain, I have been to the show in Lockport, just a thought to help the show grow and expand to include more people.  I know there is an ELOSTA show but they are very different entities in my opinion.  Just a thought.

  2. I'm looking at the HMR.  I have a couple 22's and a 22-250 heavy barrel thumbhole howa so I don't need the range. Just looking for something fun and cheap to shoot in the 100-150 yd range

What model number savage do you guys have?

    Justin,

    What is your bolt action?

  3. I am thinking of buying an entry level .17 just because.  Would be a cheaper model, not looking for anything high end at this point.  I am looking for everyones thoughts regarding which one they have had the best luck with.  Pro's/cons, etc...  Any info would be helpful. Thanks

  4. Gill,

I specifically asked about predator influence as well.  They stated that the predator take had NO influence on herd depletion, just herd expansion.  I can't remember the wording exactly but they had a slide that said that EACH YEAR deer numbers had to be reduced by 50% either by death or relocation or they will overwhelm the habitat in which they live.  All who attended are supposed to get the presentation and Q&A's emailed to them at some point, when I receive mine I will double check the info.

  5. Chas,

I think in that case he was referring to dividing the state into I believe 27 or so aggregates as opposed to around 90 WMU's.  Which as I understood it was merely to make their job of data collection easier, not to improve management plans on a more local basis.  I was the one who submitted the question after the presentation asking how this could possibly help to manage the population on a local level? In fact I think it would do exactly the opposite.

  6. As expected MOST in attendance were there  because they were concerned about LACK of deer numbers in our area.  Unfortunately, the presentation was focused on deer management and population reduction... There is supposed to be more info regarding upcoming regulation possibilities at the meeting next week.  Most of what they were saying through the webinar seemed to relate mainly, if not only to urban/suburban deer plans/ ideas.  Very lie regarding things such as abuse of nuisance permits, too many DMP's etc... Hopefully they will be addressed at next weeks meeting.  Show up if you can. Meetings will be in the same places.

  7. The Cornell Cooperative extension is hosting these at three locations.

Cayuga County: Wells College Zabriskie Hall Rm 212

Seneca County: Waterloo, Seneca County Cornell Cooperative Extension Office. 308 Main St. Shop Center

Tompkins County: Trumansburg, Village of T-burg Office. 56 E. Main St.

I look at it like this, if you have an opportunity to go listen to what they would like to do, and voice your opinion, you should do it.  If you don't agree with what they are proposing and don't get involved at all, then how can you complain about their decision?  The more concerned hunters that show up the louder our voice will be.

  8. I've used nose jammer and have seen it work as a cover scent. Its supposed to overload their sense of smell, which I think is more a marketing line than anything else.  It has a very strong vanilla smell.  I have had adult does dead down wind within 30 yds and they are definitely curious and know something is different but I haven't had them spook when they smell it. One morning this fall I had 13 deer including 6 adult does and 3 small bucks within 30 yds on all 4 sides of me, I did not get winded.   I don't use it often though.  I guess what concerns me is them  eventually associating the smell with humans.  I may be giving them more credit than they deserve but they are an amazing animal.  I look at it in the same way I look at scent-lok, etc... There is no way it eliminates all human odor, but if I'm about to get a shot and it buys me a few extra seconds when  a deer is in a marginal position and about to get my wind then its worth it in my opinion.
